  1. Answer me this... in pretty tied up, is axl describing a woman who looks good(pretty) tied up? Or is she pretty tied up as in "kind of" tied up. Like, decent job of tying one up? Always wondered that..

I think it's both. As in, she's pretty, and she's also pretty tied up, not "kind of" but more like "quite" tied up.

I agree -- it's a classic racy double entendre. Shakespeare would be proud.

  2. Getting a "taste" of something is not literally intended, you could easily substitute getting a "feel" or "exposure to an issue or situation"

Yes I know it's not literally intended -- that's why I called it a metaphor. ;) By "mixed metaphor" I was referring to a specific literary term -- here's how Wikipedia defines it:

A mixed metaphor is one that leaps from one identification to a second identification inconsistent with the first. "I smell a rat [...] but I'll nip him in the bud" -- Irish politician Boyle Roche. This form is often used as a parody of metaphor itself: "If we can hit that bullseye then the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards... Checkmate." -- Futurama character Zapp Brannigan.

Using taste is quite common in English. People often talk about the sweet taste of success etc.

Right, but it's still a metaphor -- when you say "the sweet taste of success" you are metaphorically comparing success with a sweet treat like a cookie. It's just become such a common phrase that we don't think about its meaning most of the time. But if you were to say "the sweet taste of success smells fishy to me," that would be a mixed metaphor because you are combining one type of metaphor (taste) with a different type (smell). It could still be meaningful though.

By the way, none of this is to say there's anything wrong with the lyrics or the song (one of my favorites of all time). Mixed metaphors are discouraged in certain contexts (academic writing for example) but they are fine in other contexts (such as songwriting) and can add color. It was just an observation. :)

  3. "The bright lights" can be thought of as a place. However, it does appear it's "them" in these lyrics.

True enough that they could be a metaphor for a place (or another object), but the grammar usually matches the literal meaning rather than the figurative one. Sorry to get so far down in the weeds, but as a former English major, I actually enjoy this type of stuff. ;)

It raises an interesting question -- what are "the bright lights" in WTTJ anyway? I always assumed they were a metaphor for the glamorous rock & roll lifestyle, which is attainable but not without a price ("you won't get them for free"), either materially or in terms of consequences down the road.

It's also a mixed metaphor if you think about it: how do you "taste" light exactly? At least without the help of LSD.

  4. I just went back and watched Civil War again from the 12/30 iClips stream. For anyone else like me who paid for the show and then downloaded the files after the live stream screwed up, it's on file 5 of 7 at the 20:40 mark. Not only is he clearly NOT lipsynching, it doesn't even sound like the YouTube clip posted above. It also sounds nothing like the Nashville performance of Civil War, which I listened to probably 50 times while cutting together a

. I also happened to be in the fifth row at the Nashville show.

I call shenanigans -- and not on Axl.

  5. Um... I don't know if this has been posted or talked about on this forum yet (and its 03:10 AM here so I can't be arsed checking) but I found this on youtube today; "Bumblefoot talks about The RnR HOF".

It's hilarious at the end when he talks about Justin Bieber and what happens to Spammers. XD

Heh, this is part of that livestream he did a few weeks back where he talked about his accident, some of his family problems, and played Don't Cry before abruptly signing off. I remember asking him how all the guitarists were getting along and he answered great. Figures that the HOF part would make it onto YouTube, but at the time that was the least interesting part.

  6. On this week's episode "Sorry," Axl responds to a record company exec's request to pick a producer from a stack of cd's by running over them with his truck. Paul questions his future with the band after Tommy mis-takes him for a guitar tech. And Buckethead faces a moral dilemma after developing a strong craving for Popeye's Chicken.

On the following week's episode, "Better," Axl decides he wants Brain to replace Josh Freese's near-perfect drumming on all 30+ tracks recorded thus far. Brain sets up shop in a Masonic Temple and proceeds to bang 'em out. Six months later, Chinese Democracy sounds like it was played by Dave Grohl in 1991. "Much better!" says Axl. Meanwhile, Buckethead is feeling better as he recovers from an aneurysm suffered while watching Pakistani students set fire to a Kentucky Fried Chicken on CNN.

  7. awesome videos i took from new years but how do i post them on here for you guys?? .....sryy im not that smart with computers !

Go to youtube.com and create an account. From there it's not too hard, just look for a button that says "Upload". Someone else explained how to link.

Also -- assuming the vids are on your smartphone -- you will need to transfer them to your computer somehow. Most common method is via a USB cord.

If that isn't enough detail let me know, I'll try to break it down further. ;)

  8. It would be super cool if there was a GnR movie made down the line but imagine the amount of stuff that would have to be squeezed in with just the 85-97 era!

    (snip)

Bring on the HBO series! It could run as long as The Sopranos and still have material left over.

  9. I think it's disrespectful to be discussing replacements for someone who is an active member of the band. BBF has discussed his problems, sure, but I don't recall him ever saying that leaving GNR is an option.

  10. Epic fail to the people who voted for "whichever one can spell you're correctly." Only thing worse than a grammar nazi is an incorrect grammar nazi.

Google Music got my vote. I love having my entire mp3 collection in the cloud and playable on up to 8 devices. Also like the convenience of buying music via the Android market. It's actually driven me away from torrents (for the most part).

  11. I think the legalities involved would prevent a movie about the original lineup from ever getting made during the members' lifetimes. Too many differences of opinion about what went down. The script would have to tell it from one perspective or another, and the members who disagreed with that perspective would keep filing lawsuits until production ground to a halt.

A movie about the making of CD, current era GNR etc. would be interesting, but it would have to be a sequel to a film about the original lineup or the public just wouldn't accept it. Which see the point above.

The idea of GNR as a crime-fighting team is hilarious. Reminds me of the X-Presidents on TV Funhouse.

  12. This is false IMO. The rock guys took from the blues guys, who took from the country and jazz guys. Music influences music, from the beginning.

Almost all tonal music has a previous influence. Very few exceptions and those are usually atonal.

I have yet to see ANY music which is 100% original.

    Quoted for truth.

  13. Why all the hate for Courtney Love? Hole is/was a pretty good band. All the anti-drug posturing seems out of place on a GNR forum. And Frances Bean seems to have grown up to be a relatively well-adjusted young woman, and oh did I mention she is smokin' hot? Not that it's relevant, but still...

True the "intervention" she pulled on Kurt Cobain was hypocritical bullshit and may have contributed to his death, but she saw the error of it later and apologized. I dunno, I never got why people hate her so much. This is not directed at anyone in particular, just a general observation. Flame away. :tongue2:

Frances is a pretty girl. She resembles Kurt more than her mother I think (thank god!).

Se does appears to be on the unhealthy-underweight side of the spectrum though (and I say this with regards to how her shoulders and collar bone sticks out which is indicative of an underweight woman).

Yeah I agree, she is a bit on the bony side for my taste. Her face is amazing though. Lips, eyes ....

  14. and then tell me Jack White isn't doing anything original or interesting. Sure it's blues-based, but so is the band this forum is dedicated to. Hell, the whole genre of rock n' roll is blues-based.
  15. Nobody ever mentioned the alice. I think they were the realest band of the genre. Regular guys who only wrote about things they dealt with. Alot of nice lyrics, although often simple. But it was all delivery. Cantrells riffs, along with the harmony of his and maybes voices has yet to be reproduced since. Nirvana we're big because of image mostly. I don't think their music sticks in mind as much as alice in chains, and its a shame nirvana is considered the big band of grunge music. Every ten year old in america will claim to love nirvana but probably never even heard of aic.

Agreed. Layne Staley was one of the greatest vocalists of all time IMHO. The AIC unplugged is right up there with Nirvana's.

  16. It's fun to talk about the mythology, but what's most important was how good all of the music was. I love GNR, and I love the grunge bands. The 90's ruled while the 2000's have sucked ass.

Word. The White Stripes were awesome though.

Facepalm on your post, dude. I'm not sayin she's ugly cuz she's a goth (she doesn't look like one, BTW) and I'm not sayin that she's not an adjusted person because she looks like a junkie. It has more to do with the fact that she looks like Amy Winehouse: that sick, way too skinny bitch who is going to die really soon appearance, which is not really attractive at all, no mater how drunk you are.

Amy Winehouse was hot too when she was younger. True she looked like hell towards the end, but Frances Bean looks nothing like that. Matter of opinion I guess. Princess Leia is probably more your type.

  17. That doesn't look like an well adjusted person and it sure doesn't look good or "hot". Ugly just like her mom.

Hmm, I thought I was in the GNR forum, but I seem to have taken a wrong turn and stumbled into the Our Lady of Eternal Chastity and Sobriety forum.

Sorry but goth chicks are hot.

  19. Always seemed to me Kurt Cobain was openly bisexual, and perhaps leaning a bit closer to flat out full homosexual than many are willing to believe. Hence, the hostile response to positive feedback from the author of 'One in a Million'. You take a closer look at most Nirvana songs and the majority of it really is a homosexual agenda hidden under the socially (and commercially) acceptable guise of outsider angst against high school preps. And this doesn't even factor in all the interviews, going on stage in dresses, etc.

That's an interesting interpretation. Not really buying it. Can you give some examples of Nirvana lyrics that represent this supposed "homosexual agenda"?
