  1. AD I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but face it, you are never going to win this argument man....the old material should not be touched....it would be a travesty....it's like re-making Gone with the Wind or Blade Runner, you can't improve on perfection......

  2. Well you know something it's been over 10 years since the last UYI live performance, who knows how the old band would have updated the songs in concert today? I would be really curious to see their modern takes on old classics Rocket Queen and You Could be Mine....

As far as this topic, no covers and no old songs re-done please...I thought there were way too many covers in UYI....

  3. D-generation: Good point but those 2 albums are exceptionally strong. Like I said before, they have not given an album of subpar quality. Every original album has been of a high calibur. Their impact on the industry and the world can also not be ignored. They didn't kill hair metal, but they were the ones who bridged the gap between that era and Grunge. They also had phenomenal popularity, the hype for UYI had never been seen before and never replicated again by any band since.....

For whatever reason it seems the UYI albums hurt their career in the eyes of the media even though those albums had incredibly crafted songs. And ofcourse Axl's role as an "artist" was always completely ignored in favor of his controversial aspects....

I once read an interview of Axl's where he said he did AFD only so he could get his foot in the music industry and that his plan from day one was always to craft songs of an epic and ambitious nature like what was in UYI....

I might catch flack for this and maybe it might be blasphemous, but I'd like to think of Axl as a modern day Jim Morrison....

  4. You know I think he really was getting somewhere with UYI, its a damn shame with such great songs on that album, it was completely misunderstood by the media and forgotten under the hype of the Grunge movement.

Just bad timing and bad luck I guess, and now he's courting controversy again by really being the first frontman to lead a band with no other original members....I hope that drama doesn't take away from the impact of the songs he has spent the last decade trying to create. Give the man his due I say, he fucking deserves it....

GnR placing #80 something in the all-time list of great bands in rolling stone is pathetic and quite simply wrong given the criteria they are judging the bands by....

  5. Reading those threads about the brazilian and swedish journalist ripping Axl and Guns got me thinking about something.

I always felt that the impact of Guns N Roses and Axl Rose as a frontman/artist were severely underrated by the media outlets like Rolling Stone. Guns N Roses gave one of the all time greatest rock albums in AFD, a near perfect album, a seminal debut for a grimy rock band. They weren't posers, they weren't intentionally being subversive, they were just real and raw.

But they get written off as some flash in the pan band with a couple good songs who were sort of popular in their day but are a relic of the past with outdated music.

Lord knows I'm no Axl-lite, but Axl Rose's talents and his abilities as a songwriter and artist are completely ignored and mired under his lesser traits (homophobia, purported racism, being an asshole, etc). Axl has ofcourse made it worse by continuing to use the GnR name without the other members to the ire of the music industry and media. But aside from all his controversial aspects and areas where obviously he deserves some of the shit he gets, the guy was an immensely talented frontman. You don't write songs like Estranged and November Rain and lyrics to songs like Coma and be considered "that red haired asshole from guns n roses you know that 80's hair metal band, yeah they had a few good songs, Appetite was their only good album everything else afterwards was shit"...bet everyone has heard that line before in everything you read about Guns N Roses....

Now Guns in their day were a phenomenally talented band with worldwide popularity, they were the biggest band in the world. Their original material (AFD, Lies, UYI) are exceptionally strong albums with material that is holding up well over time. This isn't dated shit like stuff you find in the later Van Halen albums, Skid Row,etc....people are still listening to Paradise City and November Rain....Guns N Roses took risks whether they were successfull or not is subjective but they were not a one-dimensional band. Yet many say they were corporate rock, even with 10 minute art rock epics with f-bombs littered throughout....

So what do you guys think is the reason this band and Axl are so underrated? They were the last big band to make waves in America, not a single band has taken the mantle and become huge in America. Not one. For all the shit Axl gets, is there a single frontman who comes close to what he did in the 80's and 90's? Nope. In an era of posers (Eminem), you have a truly controversial band with a great frontman who really has not delivered a subpar record of original material. As the VH1 biography of Guns says, Axl's image has been frozen in time because he left the industry on such a strong note. Yet his legacy is still a big question mark, he still has not cemented it like Slash....will he do it with Chinese Democracy? Get the rightful praise he deserves?

FYI: This is not a thread to fawn over Axl Rose (sorry Axllites)

  6. We get it....you don't like Slash....

It's hard to believe some of you guys are fans of Guns N Roses, every guns album released so far has had Slash on lead guitar. How can you hate the lead guitarist of a band you love and the guy who has played on 99% of the whole catalogue? :book:

  7. Let's bear in mind this is a demo and it's ok that it's... well not very good. What the fuck is that? It's like death metal or something. The start of the song is great then it reaches a point of nothing... just nothing. If Chinese Democracy is like that fans will really dislike it. However, remember Axl said that ''Better'' was one of his favourites so it might have had a lot of work done on it since. Too heavy

It is heavy but I don't think too heavy. It's a rocker that is for sure. I would disgaree that it reaches a point of nothing. The song structure is different as he said they might be. He's trying something different he said too. If people want the same old shit from UYI and AFD they are probably going to be disapointed. I like the contrast of the heavy guitar sounds and Axl's ravaging vocals to his softer, more pop-sounding chorus lines. The song is catchy and keeps me coming back to hear it again. I think is going to be one of the heavier ones on the album, I don't think they will all be like this. We're going to get a mix of all kinds of shit.

I can't wait for this album to release...we're almost there and the wait is killing me.....

  8. Difference of opinions are a good thing, this board isn't a dictatorship AD much to your chagrin I'll bet. If Axl did say that, it's a dick thing to say, but I doubt he would ever utter anything like that in public.

He isn't the main ingredient. Axl - creative force who gave the band direction, Izzy - song writer, Slash - came up with all the legendary riffs.

Where would Sweet Child O MIne, Paradise City, and WTTJ be without SLash's riffs? Nowhere. Just songs with cool lyrics. They are classics because of the great lyrics AND riffs. It was a collaborative effort, atleast AFD was.

yes, but you need someone who pushes you to get the best out of you..... Considering Slash's solo work and velvet revolver Slash isn't using his full potentional......he was with guns and axl as drive...... Ever listened to Bucket solo work? Nothing really worth listening to over and over again is it??? (my opinion, yes there are some nice songs, Sketches in Spain, Too many humans, and the like......) but these demo's show the true craftship of Axl Rose combined with Bucket... Axl Rose is the man behind the drivers seat.....we can obviously hear the who's directing

I'll agree with that point of view. I always thought Axl was able to bring out the best in all members of GnR. Slash was wasted in Contraband imho. He's capable of so much more....

  9. Awesome.....I'm pulling for Finck to hit this out of the park, hope Chinese Democracy brings Guns back in a big way.... rock1

i think the problem most have with finck is the way he plays the old material. but if he played it note for note like slash did he'd be getting bashed for that too. I think most will change their tune when they see stuff like this in the new material.

You might be right...I don't dig Finck's style on the old material, don't think he has the chops for it, but on his own material like Madagascar and The Blues his work is good stuff, especially The Blues....I hope he fuckin blows me away because I do NOT want to see any element in this album fail.

  10. Difference of opinions are a good thing, this board isn't a dictatorship AD much to your chagrin I'll bet. If Axl did say that, it's a dick thing to say, but I doubt he would ever utter anything like that in public.

  11. And no I dont think either him or Slash will in anyway be affiliated with the tour. This is Axls baby, why would he involve the old members now? this whole exercise is to prove to the world that Axl is the main man of GnR and the others were expendable assets.

Perhaps all the bitterness is gone now... It would be a wonderful token of friendship if Slash and Izzy accepted to come back to help Axl. And an Axl's token of friendship if he accepted the help... :)

Wishful thinking man....if it does happen then for once Axl is thinking about the fans and what they want.

Can't imagine that would go well with the new band, I doubt Fortus/Finck want to play with either Slash or Izzy....

  12. Matt: I know you don't like BH and his style but face the facts man, the guy was a huge draw for gnr. he brought interest in the band. GnR needs a charismatic lead guitarist with amazing playing ability. We had Slash, and then we got Buckethead, someone with similar skills. A lot of people loved the guys picking speed and shredding ability, Nightrain 2002 rocks the casbah. You know when a diehard fan of Slash tells you that, BH must have been real special.

Sure his image was kinda kooky but Finck was a freakshow as well. If Bh didnt fit in, neither did Finck....

GnR needs another guitarist on par with Slash and BH. Finck doesn't cut it, he's competent, but he isnt amazing.

Indiana: I've read your posts on Axl's voice, I know you've spent time analyzing the songs over the different eras, but Im curious as to why you say his voice now is more versatile than the Illusion era? Sure his voice was pretty busted in the illusion era with that whiny screech, but he still had some depth to his vocals, his newer voice sounds so thin....he just can't do the grungy gravely nightrain type voice anymore. Remember that nightrain demo and his voice on it? He can't pull that voice off anymore live imho.....

  13. Anybody who doesn't think Izzy can solo, please check out "DOUBLE TALKING JIVE". That solo is all him, Slash just plays the ending flamenco part in the outro. He can do it if he wants to, there was never a need when you have one of the best solo players in the world (Slash)....

And no I dont think either him or Slash will in anyway be affiliated with the tour. This is Axls baby, why would he involve the old members now? this whole exercise is to prove to the world that Axl is the main man of GnR and the others were expendable assets.

If anything I think he'll get a virtuoso guitarist like Bumblefoot on tour to do the BH parts. If not the band is screwed, finck can't even play as good as Fortus the rhthym guitarist. Imagine Finck trying to play BH's parts....ears will bleed...

Axl can't take over the world without a great lead guitarist. Hope he finds one soon....

  14. I think Axl should bring back the SCOM look....long hair, leather, and the bandana...that was timeless. He looks kinda sleazy these days.....

You'd really want to see a man of 44 years wearing tight leather pants?

This isn't a Rob Halford forum you know.

    His style is fine.

Not the tight leather pants per se, but the classic Axl Rose look, meaning the leather jacket, bandana and long hair. There is something iconic about that image. Kind of like Slash and his top hat/cigarette....

  15. I like all of Axl's new stuff with the exception of junk like Silkworms and Rhiad which won't even make the final cut of CD. He's still a hell of a song writer. What bugs me about songs like Madagascar and The Blues is they are in need of some real guitar solos. The ones in the songs are cool, but they just aren't anything to get excited over. These are not solos people will be talking about years later like how people still get giddy over the outro to November Rain or the solos in Estranged....I never felt like his band was up to par with him, we all know Axl is talented, but every captain needs a good crew. A good captain with a shoddy crew can't save a sinking ship. My only fear for CD is that people like Finck are going to let him down. Right off the bat I can tell you, with better guitar solos Madagascar and The Blues would be much better than they are right now...

  16. Sylvester,

Don't we all have a bit of an ego though when we post here. We all think our posts are the correct ones and bash others just to debate/argue.

What is important is that we are all here because we are GNR fans and believe in the band. Yes it's been a long wait since 2002 and I do believe we are about to be rewarded for that wait.

    :)

We see eye to eye there, I can't believe we are in the home stretch of seeing Chinese Democracy finally. It is my #1 most anticipated album since I heard TSI in 1993. I have nothing but support for Axl and the band, and wish for them to succeed as any gunner fan would.

  17. What defeats warchild is his huge ego and his complete intolerance for different points of view. As long as you agree with everything he says and kiss his ass, then you're "right". If you don't agree, expect to get flamed in the most infantile of ways. He's actually so insecure he needs support from other teenage kids (the only ones who like him) to back up his pov.

If you want to be taken seriously by anyone above 18 here, then I suggest you try to be a little balanced in your views and not a rabid axl rose fanboy who lashes out at anyone who doesn't agree with everything you say.
