  1. Axl's Guns, definetely. I just love to see this more experimental, metallic, less vintage sounding side of GN'R. TWAT's solo is my all-time favorite from Guns. They also gave low tunings a try with Better! rock1

Nah Shackler's and Scraped are where the low tunings are at, the lowest note on Better is just a C#

Whatever. everything lower than drop D is already low enough for me...

  2. My Ace Frehley Les Paul has three DiMarzio Super Distortion pick-ups. Frehley himself admitted the middle one was more or less just for show, so I don't find myself using it at all (the toggle is a standard Les Paul toggle so it the middle one only kicks in if you have the switch in the middle, which of course pairs it with the neck and bridge pick-up as well).

For something called "Super Distortion" they are quite versatile, provided you dial your amp settings appropriately. The tone is thick with surprising clarity.

I use a Marshall JCM 2000 half-stack and never put the gain past 5 or 6, otherwise it can become a mess (for this guitar anyway, my SG is another story). If you knock it down to about 4 on the crunch channel it can do the light AC/DC type overdrive, whereas about 6 on the crunch channel gives me a very close tone to Slash. The amp also has a lead boost channel which works very nice for leads. Again, the neck pick-up on the lead channel does a very nice Slash tone.

I get a decent clean out of it too - it's the stereotypical Marshall clean sound. Add a little bit of chorus and I'm all set. Once again - the name "Super Distortion" makes them sound a lot heavier than they are as the clean is pretty nice.

I don't think I'd ever switch - I never got complimented for tone as much as I do ever since I got this guitar.

Nice. I used to worship the JB, but since I started using baritone guitars I couldn't help feeling a bit disapointed towards its lack of low end, especially with distortion engaged. I tried some active EMG 808's on a Schecter C8, they had good lows, but their overall clean sounding was a bit crappy. I always loved that 90's new metal rectifier tone, but the JB was too weak to replicate it on the lower notes.

Then I found these 2 videos (I love u, youtube):

    2.

The easiest decision i have ever made, The DD had it all: Bright and grainy (that slight breakup) cleans and a nice massive low end chunk.

  3. 1. Chinese Democracy (2008)

    2. Use Your Illusion II (1991)

    3. Use Your Illusion I (1991)

    4. Appetite for Destruction (1987)

    5. GN'R Lies (1988)

    6. Live 'Era '87-93 (1999)

    7. "The Spaghetti Incident" (1993)

  4. Looks nice. I've managed to get pedals 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 (Just ordered this one, I'm waiting for its arrival) from my list. I'll post some photos from the current setup later.

I still need a power supply for them... a MXR MC 402 and a T-Rex Fuel Tank Chamelleon should do the trick.

Well, thanks for sharing! Best of luck, to you and your band!

You mean the 403? The 402 is a boost pedal I'm sure??.... Unless you can power others off it like some Boss pedals?

The 403 looks like a beastly power supply! I would have got it but it was too big/overkill for this board. I considered the T-Rex Jr but went with the PP2+ because of isolated outputs. I think the chameleon has isolated outputs too so good choice there.

Whooops! You're right, that huge power suply is the 403, not the 402. Sorry for that, typing is not my forte, especially with this small (notebook) keyboard.

  5. Don't know about all time dream but I put this together last night:

    DSC00356.jpg

    DSC00357.jpg

    Signal chain goes:

    Guitar

    BOSS TU-3 tuner

    JD JC Wah

    Amp

The amp is Marshall JVM410H so the footswitch for that controls all my clean/OD/solo sounds and reverb.

    In the FX loop is:

    Retro Sonic Chorus

    MXR delay

    BOSS DD-7 delay

My dream is that this sounds great at band practice tomorrow

  6. Mine:

    1. Hero of The Day (Metallica): The first song I learned

    2. Dirt (Alice In Chains): I learned that a good riff requires more than 3 power chords being repeated over and over. It requires melody.

    3. Master Of Puppets (Metallica): This one taught me that the way you pick makes a huge difference: downpick it all the way...

    4. Combustion (Meshuggah): Complex song, polyrhythms. I was introduced to the world of ER's and baritone guitars thanks to this song.

    5. Rotten Apple (Alice In Chains): Thanks to this one, I noticed how effects and pedals are important in order to create the atmosphere you're looking for the song.

  7. There's so many Pups around: Seymour,Emg, Dimarzio,Lundgren, Bareknuckle, passives, actives, single coils, Humbuckers... Which one translates the sounds in your head into real music?

Mine: SD SH6/TB6 Duncan Distortion -Bridge- (my all time favorite) and I love to pair it with a SH2 Jazz -neck- (both passive pickups).

I love this setup for it's amazing versatility. rock1

  9. Hey there, Everybody!

I really don't like vintage or vintage-sounding stuff. I'm more into 90's metal, grunge stuff - Although I'm not much of a Nu Metal fan, those bands had a huge influence on me tonewise (I love those heavy, low tuned riffs and rectifier tone they were known for). the 80's had some great stuff too. those post-Van Hallen, Heavy, Thrash Metal bands are also a great source of inspiration, except for some over-dramatic Glam bands. I never really liked the 3 power chord punk style, it's not bad, just a little too boring. I always favored those more melodic, easy to recognize riffs n verses: Last of My kind, Black, Rotten Apple, Broken, Beat N' Scarred, Outshined, Rock You Like A Hurricane, Died.

    1. Jerry Cantrell

    2. Kirk Hammet & James Hetfield
