Just chiming in to say I love both, but especially "Monsters" - it's heavy, crazy, industrial, and exactly what I want to hear from those days of Axl recording.

This reminds me so much of the Village leaks. It's something the band had forever, Axl was probably insecure over, and we all just fucking eat it up because it rules.

I may be going against the grain but I do not want Slash & Duff on these or any similar material - just release them as is.

EDIT: Read back some pages. Has it been confirmed that Slash & Duff are on these or Finck?

Assuming it's Slash on Monsters, it seems like he really found a way to gel with the material vs playing over top of it and it just feeling like a Slash copy/paste lol, kinda like how Prince's While My Guitar Gently Weeps solo is canon despite coming 40 years late and him not being a band member.

  2. Idk, I dig Monsters and The General is growing on me lol.  Monsters is a cool melding of the weird CD shit with a more classic sound during the chorus.

I am glad we're getting "new" music by whatever means though.  1-2 tracks a year beats 0.  I am not sure about the slow drip release method tho and do wonder if we'll ever get some sort of official CD2 tracklist.  I am more old-fashioned and would like that comprehensive CD2 but with the way these tracks have been marketed that seems unlikely for the foreseeable future.  I kinda think it'd be okay though if they release maybe 1-2 of the known tracks ( idk Atlas, SOG ), and then release "CDII" with like 3-4 additional unreleased tracks.

  3. I mean, the whole cryptic / mystery thing works when you’re a band or whatever that consistently delivers the goods.  The secrecy thing also doesn’t help when the “management” are such gobshites.  New music is nice, and I guess it’s a bit of a miracle we’ve gotten anything, but the reality is we’ve gotten reheated Chinese leftovers from 2 decades ago.

I hope this isn’t an Axl thing lol, but maybe Absurd, Hard Skool, and Perhaps were easier for Axl to let go of since they’d already been taken/“stolen”.

I'd love 3/4 best of cd tracks, ie oklahoma/elvis/tonto/must/perhaps, and a few new rockers over completely new album with new compositions.  I love the cd era despite the casual fan concensus that it was "not gnr". AND, would love the album to have a high dynamic range and not loud in the "loudness wars" sense. Anyone notice how overly loud Absurd was?

I think Absurd being loud was more of a style choice and is likely more of a one-off in that regard, at least we can hope.  Axl seems pretty in tune with how he wants an album to sound ( picking the CD master with the best dynamic range, that Brain story about Axl picking up on a small drum bit missing ).

Just guessing, I feel like we'll get 1/3 new/unheard stuff that is Slash heavy, 1/3 stuff we've already heard ( we're already close to that once Hard School drops ), and 1/3 unheard CD stuff.

  5. Yeah, I dunno about the article.  Axl definitely did help them out in a bit of a tight spot though and helped rehab his own image a bit.  I think ACDC was always going to release a new album tho, whether with Axl or with Brian Johnson recovering.

Not that it was a great hope, but I thought if Axl went on to do an album with ACDC then it might help the chances of a GNR album just by virtue of Axl getting more positive press and whatnot.

  6. Another aspect of this is that GNR would've been one of the main forces in rock music by default had they remained viable from 2000-2002ish on.  I can't think of who would've replaced them anyway, as most of the garage rock bands and others from that time period mostly petered off for one reason or another.   GNR/Axl were definitely in a unique position there, given the status the band had already achieved and also having the chance to take the torch and carry things forward.

  7. Got both of the vinyl sets.  Pretty good price since it looks like the Sound City set alone has gone for $100 on feebay.

You can use the code GNR10 and get 10% off the order as well.

As for LNL, yeah $400 is still a bit high, but I'm gonna predict a Black Friday sale we see it at like $250.

So what's the general thought here... Were there really 60 songs or was it just BS?

Not too many new things in these locker CD's. Where's the rest?

I think this is about as much as anyone could have hoped for.   Not sure on exact numbers, but at least 20ish tracks with half of them either having vocals or vocals are known to have been recorded.  So CD being touted as a potential trilogy seems accurate.  Taken by itself, it's clear this was a very productive/inspired time for Axl.  Ideally, we would've gotten 2000 Intentions and then another album every 3-4 years afterward which gets things through to 2008 on the strength of that material alone.

So, in summary, I'm not necessarily a big proponent of releasing a whole new album, just for these reasons...I would be satisfied with 3-4 good tracks from the reunited crew in an EP of some sort, but fear what an 11-12 track album might actually sound like....could be as bad as Aerosmith's last studio album a few years back.

GNR should still have plenty of gas in the tank though.   A lot of bands only have a certain # of albums in them and then they kinda fizzle out creatively until they can find their 2nd wind or a new direction or whatever.  I don't think GNR ever got to the point of being spent creatively, and even if they had Axl was (to his credit and detriment) always looking for ways to evolve.  They should, at the least, with all of the CD leftovers/etc, be able to put out 1 album that stands alongside and most likely trumps everything except AFD.
