Atlas was hyped up for years on this forum like it was some masterpiece. And when it finally leaked, it ended up a shit song. Haha I learned my lesson from that, so I’m not expecting to like a song based off of small pieces or a title.

I learned my lesson after Sebastian Bach was talking up “sorry” back before CD came out.

Atlas was better than I expected and Bach was right about Sorry. Anyone who says that "almost like doom metal" isn't a pretty accurate way to describe Sorry has probably never listened to doom metal.

That being said when The General is released, I will listen to it and then listen to it some more. That's it really!

I just don't think the general public cares about old demos with new guitar and bassd tracks pasted on them using 25 year old vocals.. It is avbsolutely ridiculous. I don't know anyone outside of this forum that didn't think them same.  Then there is the fcat that the songs kind of sucked compared to their past catalopg.

The general public doesn't know or care whether these new songs are derived from old demos. Only dedicated Guns N' Roses fans are aware that these songs have origins in the past. Not gonna comment on the quality of these songs compared to the band's older catalog, since obviously it's a matter of taste. All I know is that the comments section of the Hard Skool video on YouTube predominantly consists of positive comments and it's already a more popular song on Spotify than for example Breakdown, Perfect Crime, Get in the Ring, Bad Obsession, Dead Horse etc, which is not too shabby.

Slash said the songs to come "don't have that kind of history", so Idk about Atlas or Perhaps...

Perhaps is literally on the setlist, so it's pretty safe to say that they'll probably play it at some point. Of course Going Down was on the setlist a long time ago too, so nothing's guaranteed with GNR. But still, Perhaps is currently the most likely new song to be played and released.

Nobody talks how they dropped You're Crazy...

What is there to talk about? They can't play every single song from their catalogue in one show. They might play You're Crazy later on this tour or they might not. You're Crazy is not exactly a staple on the setlist and if you're going to add a lot of new songs on your setlist you have to drop some other songs.

After Reckless Life I'm intrigued of that song I can't think about what It can be

What do you mean? After Reckless Life there's Shadow of Your Love and then You Could Be Mine.

What I'm most excited about is "Perhaps" It really does look like Perhaps is after Civil War/Live & Let Die.

Do you ever listen to a genre called blackgaze? There's a good band called show me a dinosaur that does very atmospheric rock music, though not fast paced.

The truth is that gnr were and are probably the best at what they do. And they came at the end of their genres popularity (American hard rock), which stretched from early 70s to 1990.

There's probably some bands out there as creative as gnr, but so niche that not many people will hear them.

Also if you haven't heard them I'd recommend a band called paradise lost. They have huge and consistent back catalogue.

Thanks! I always appreciate when people give me music recommendations. I listened to some Show Me a Dinosaur. It was decent post rock, but unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of that genre. I feel like most post rock music sound pretty much the same. I know that might sound like sacrilege to fans of the genre, but I don't mean to diss the genre. It's my problem. I wish I would enjoy post rock more, but I need a lot of variation in my music. Paradise Lost is also ok, but it's a bit too gloomy for me to get excited about. I tend to gravitate more towards weird and experimental music like Radiohead or crazy fast paced music like, I don't know, Frenzy by Iggy Pop was probably the last rock song that I really liked, even if it was a bit generic, but I really liked the energy.

If by active rock band you mean mainstream stadium concert headlining rock band, then it's all about taste and I get it. But man, there are literally thousands and thousands of amazing rock bands out there, that put out great stuff constantly. You don't need to settle for "at least they release music". Rock music is alive and well, it's in perfect state. It's just not what sells nowadays and it doesn't get any spotlight. But it's out there for everyone with a bit of good will and patience to search and discover. If you don't like what's hyped right now, you need to discover new stuff, and not wait til it comes to you. Those days are over.

What can I say. It's a matter of taste. I always hear people talk about how there's so many great rock bands out there but every time I ask for recommendations people give me some boring uncreative wannabe Led Zeppelin type stuff or some death metal growling that doesn't interest me much. I've tried to find interesting modern rock bands, but everything that I find is usually just okay at best. Sometimes I might find one good song from a new band but the rest of their discography is boring.

Typically I gravitate towards music that breaks new ground instead of trying to sound like old bands so I've been listening to other genres lately much more than rock music. But I always hope that I would find some new rock music that would excite me. Especially fast paced rock music that isn't generic would be great. Or something experimental like Caleb Landry Jones for example. That's one modern artist that I really like. Not sure if you can call it rock music though.

But yeah, I was talking about my own taste and unfortunately I struggle to find modern rock music that I'd enjoy, no matter how much I search for it.

I prefer my rock not sterile, I think QOTSA is a much "better" band and they are still active. I would like another Crooked Vultures record for sure. (with Dave behind the drum kit)

having said that, there are a bunch of Foo Fighters records I'm into. Wasting Light was the last one I really enjoyed from them.

Sure, I get that. I don't like rock music that's too sterile either. But I was talking about my own taste and I'm not a big fan of Josh Homme's voice personally. QOTSA and Crooked Vultures are okay, but none of their songs has the kind of energy as The Pretender for example. And I just prefer Dave Grohl's voice a billion times over Josh Homme's voice.

Not much love for Foo Fighters here!

I'm surprised actually. Decent enough band, some great tunes in their catalogue.

I know around here we prefer our bands idle and coasting on the past, but Foo Fighters aren't so bad, surely?!

Yeah I was surprised about that too. For my taste I'd say Foo Fighters is probably the best active rock band out there currently. Of course that says more about the state of rock music than it does about the quality of Foo Fighters. The band hasn't released anything that great in a while, but at least they still release music and the music is fine. Not great but fine. That's more than I can say about almost any current band.

Josh Freese is probably my favorite drummer out of everyone who's been involved with GNR, so it will be interesting to see what he will do with Foo Fighters. I'm sure that they still have some bangers left in them.

Axl did release Absurd though, a song that I'm guessing he knew would be accepted poorly by most Gn'R fans before releasing it, but maybe because he wanted to do it and thought it had a place in the Gn'R catalog and it was a good time to release it, it got released.

speculation again, but it seems to me like the hurdle with Axl is if a Gn'R song he has fits within what he wants the "Gn'R big picture" to be, but I really don't know. I also believe that if he really wanted to compose film scores he would have done it by now or at least for now, he prefers his Gn'R gig. Maybe when Gn'R no longer exists, he'll do other shit like film scores and writing his autobiography or whatever.

I agree! Releasing Absurd was a surprisingly ballsy move from Axl who sometimes seems too concerned about criticism these days. But then again Hard Skool was a very safe song that he probably knew would be well accepted by fans (even if some criticize it for being underproduced). I'm guessing that Axl likes Absurd a lot himself and releasing it at this point felt like a good move cause he could follow it up with the safer song Hard Skool.

I don't think that Axl is only interested in pleasing fans. Otherwise the band would be more like AC/DC. I think that Axl wants to experiment and push the boundaries of GNR music, but simultaneously he also cares about criticism and he's trying to both please the fans and push the boundaries of GNR music. That's not an easy thing to do and might partly explain why he's so slow at releasing music.

I'm not sure how interested he actually is about composing film music. Maybe he is interested and mentioned it in hopes that some movie directors would approach him about it. But maybe no one has approached him. At least no director that Axl would have been interested in working with. I don't know. This is obviously just speculation from my part too.

Sometimes Axl seems bored with the limitations of what is considered acceptable GNR music. But I do think that Axl still cares a lot about GNR. He probably cares too much. Seems to me that Axl wants to be remembered as someone who never stopped pushing the boundaries of what GNR music can sound like, but at the same time he doesn't want to alienate the fans who want more of the classic sound. At least that's my interpretation of the situation.

What do these bands have in comment?  They weren't rich old men surrounded by people who talk about the amazing music they'd made in the last 30 years which nobody gets to hear.  They were much younger and much more productive than Axl has been for the last 30 years.  They made music and wanted people to hear it so they made it happen.

Not sure what your point with this is? Everyone knows that the GNR guys aren't young anymore. Everyone knows that they are rich. So what? What is your point? Are you saying that GNR is never going to release music because they're old and rich?

    13 hours ago, ChrisW said:

They also had plenty of opportunity to look back on what they'd done and see when mistakes were made.  Can't learn from your mistakes if you don't do anything and Axl doesn't make mistakes.  He could have put out an album where he sings everything in pig-latin and he'd say now 'what was I thinking?  Never do that again!'  But instead there's nothing to learn from.

But Axl has made "mistakes". The UYI records were called overproduced and some people complained that the songs are too long and pompous. Then Oh My God was released and people complained that it's too industrial. Then Chinese Democracy was released and it was again considered overproduced. Then Absurd and Hard Skool were released and some people called especially Hard Skool underproduced.

Some might argue that the reason why he's releasing music so rarely is because he has already made plenty of "mistakes" and he's learned that the frames of accepted GNR music are very limited. That might be why he seems currently more interested in composing film scores instead of GNR music. Cause the limits for what people accept as GNR music might seem too restricting

He'll just live in a mansion and go out sometimes to go "It's so easy, so fuckin easy, it's so easy, so damn easy, it's so easy, so fuckin easy, it's so easy, yeah it's so easy."  An old man clinging to a long-gone era.

So your point is that you don't think that GNR will ever release music again? Or what exactly is your point?

So basically our three favorite Gn'R songs? Probably NR,RQ and Estranged.

Not necessarily. If I would have to spend a long time on a deserted island with only 3 songs, I'd pick songs that are different from each other, so that I would have some variety.

    My picks would be:

You Could Be Mine (The ultimate rocker)

    Estranged (The ultimate epic)

    Better (Something slightly different)

  13. No new album is pretty much the only disappointment I have. Or lack of new music to be precise. It doesn't even have to be in album form. I'm fine with singles, but two songs is just way too little. Why does this band always have to give the bare minimum. I'm totally fine with remakes of old CD-era material. I love both Hard Skool and Absurd.

Sure they've released the AFD and UYI remasters, but I personally never cared about any of that. I never really listen to live music.

I always wanted new music from GNR more than a reunion. It's been really great to see Axl, Slash and Duff together on stage again, but lack of new music has left a sour taste in my mouth and I've never been as bored with this band as I am currently.

That being said, I'm sure that they will release new music again at some point and I'm sure that I will love it. That's more than I can say about most bands. This band releases music at an extremely slow pace, but when they do release music, it's better than most music out there. So I can't complain too much.
