  1. Brain, if you can drum with Les Fucking Claypool, you have some incredible skills. Had a great groove and power to match.

Freese? Fucking fantastic and versatile drummer, but I can't judge his GNR performance since he only played on Oh My God. I can't really count him.

Ferrer? Worst drummer GNR has ever had. I don't see how people think he's better than Brain. I don't even see how people think he's better than Matt. I think he's a very watered down version of Sorum. Competent at best.

  2. For those who don't know about Black Star Riders:

After Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy died in the 80's, the band was revived in the late 90's essentially as a tribute band. A few of the core members stayed and the remaining roles were filled up by a revolving door of musicians (In fact, good ol' Fortus even played with them).

The current touring lineup of Thin Lizzy was so good that they decided to release some music. Scott Gorham, the lone original member of the current lineup was very open to this idea, but decided to release the music under a different name out of respect for the original band. And thus, Black Star Riders was born and the debut wasn't half bad (There's really a good amount of potential for the future). When they tour, they play a combination of BSR and Thin Lizzy material.

I feel like NuGnr is essentially the same thing as Black Star Riders when it comes to their scenarios. BUT, Black Star Riders doesn't get nearly as much flack as NuGnr does. Why is this?

If there's anything else you want to add, feel free.

Note to Self: Listen to Thin Lizzy more

Note to Self: Listen to Gary Moore more

Note to Self: Make a, "Would Vivian Campbell or Ricky Warwick make a good replacement for DJ?" thread.

  3. I get the Pitman jokes, but he's no joke. He's all over CD, and he's a key part in the live sound. Also he seems to be one of those guys that is very high in spirits, good vibes for everyone. The soul at the party. A real rockstar.

As it's been said, I think his tambourine work in WTTJ really ties the song together.

Ultimately though a think a good portion of people's opinions on them boil down to people's acceptance of the new sound I guess. I'm rather indifferent to it, but one thing I am heavily opinionated on is excess. I think a leaner band will result in tighter and stronger music, regardless of the genre. When you have a guy that sits in the corner and smacks a tambourine during half of the set, has an inaudible keyboard and adds a bunch of shitty synths/fucking backing tracks that destroy the essence of what the band is all about, well, it's hard for me to see the positives. When did a band ever add a member for fucking morale purposes? That's a waste of space. As Axl said, he'd probably fire Pitman first.

I really don't see how he's a rockstar either. He'd be some obscure guy if it wasn't for GNR (There's like 5 songs of him BETWEEN YouTube and Spotify). I think the Sextapes stuff is a bunch of angry screaming and I'd imagine his electronica work is of similarly bad quality. If being an asshole makes him a rockstar, then I must be Freddie Mercury.

The burning question I want to know is...is Axl donating his cast off hats to Chris?

    It's an inner conspiracy man.

  4. I like the songs Madagascar and If the World, so I enjoy his musical contribution. I do however find his stage presence strange and a bit out of place.

The first time I saw GNR I became terrified that his keyboard was broke, and it would endanger the entire show... IE Axl would blow a gasket and stop the show...

Can't Axl have one of the THREE guitarists available do his parts for If The World?

  5. I'm finding it very hard to come up with intros to threads and I'm also finding it even more difficult to not make puns about my username.

That aside, I feel like it's time to bring up another thread about arguably the most unknown member (Or the one who gets the least amount of attention) of the nu-GNR lineup even though he's been in the band since the late 90's.

I've personally never seen the point of having two keyboardists in a single band because I think that's a bit overkill. You can argue that Pitman's role as a second keyboardist was predated by Teddy Zig Zag's touring tenure with the band, but I also think the band shined more during the Skin N' Bones section of the UYI tour.

It also doesn't help that Pitman's keyboards are essentially inaudible under a wail of three guitars. I also think that synths and backing tracks and other audio effects aren't what GNR is about and shouldn't be a part of their sound. If he controls any pyro-tech or other visual effects, then relegate him to the road screw. If he helps with writing songs, then hide him in the vault with Paul Huge.

I really think that he's the definition of someone that kisses Axl's ass (Right down to the hat, haha). He's stayed loyal to him and kept quiet for over 15 years and as a reward he's probably making more money than he'd ever make anywhere else in his life. And for all of the people who are to going to jump and defend him by saying, "It's what Axl wants", well we got DJ Ashba because of that.

So yeah, feel free to give your opinions on them. I'm curious to see if anyone can change my opinion on him even though it didn't occur the last time I made a thread like this.

  6. So when we talk about Ashba's hat it's alright but when we talk about Pitman's hat it's not?

When I read this thread's title, I thought it was you making another hat thread out of spite.

I actually didn't notice that thread until after mine got locked haha. But I'll make another general Pitman thread sooner or later. I think it's time.

Ashba posted this on twitter...it's a homemade hat that a fan made and DJ put it on.

On a side note...everyone bashes him for wearing a top hat style hat...it's not even a top hat. He used to wear a huge top hat before he joined guns, then he switched to his current scrunched style hat.

I've found like one or two pictures of him wearing a regular top hat compared the 20 billion of his current one. But for the most part during his early days with Sixx AM, he either wore a bandana, beanie/tobaggan hat or no hat at all. It's kinda obvious his current hat is to replicate Slash's.

  7. The only band that ever worked with three guitarists was Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, because everyone of them were talanted and had chemistry, wich is something that this band doesn't have. Loosing a guitarist in this band would do absolutely nothing as long as there's a dude with a les paul playing Sweet Child one and a half hour into the show.

    False. Lynyrd Skynyrd.

And when Danny Kirwan was in the band, Jeremy Spencer kind of took a backseat (He's got basically no contributions on Then Play On).

  8. What was it like in I think it was 2009 before ashba got hired .. Was there anyone of any significance that auditioned ? Do we even know who did ? I wasn't on the forum around then

I remember reading a few months back that a guy named Nuno Bettencourt was asked to audition. He played with Gary Cherone (That one guy who was the third singer for Van Halen). Shreds a lot like BBF.
    Cherone was from extreme right

    Yeah.

  10. I've always advocated for DJ leaving so Richard and Ron can handle dual-lead guitar. It's all that's needed. If Axl really wanted a third guy, ask Izzy to come back.

I'm kinda sorta now advocating for Tommy to leave also because I'm really convinced his heart isn't in the band anymore. I think the bassist position should be left for Duff and Duff only.

Oh yeah and fire Pitman and replace Frank with the best drummer that nu-GNR ever had (Brain), Axl get in shape release a new album adkfj;alskdfjalkdsfj;l etc etc etc.

  11. This forum is unreal.

"he isn't even as good as 2012 standards"

"he isn't as good as 2010"

"he isn't as good as 2006"

"he was in his prime 20 years ago"

"Actually he was better in AFD years, was overly raspy in the UYI tour"

"No, wait, he was better before AFD was released in 1987"

"No, he was good for the first half of 1987 only"

"Actually he sounded better when thinking them up in his head when he was writing the songs in 86'"

    HAHAHAAA. So fucking true.

    God, you're all wrong.

You need his grade-school choir bootlegs if you really wanna hear him shine.

    Filthy casuals.

  12. No, the fast version of You're Crazy is the worst on the album, but Think About You is right behind it and closely followed by Anything Goes.

    This is pretty spot on.

AFD doesn't have a bad song, but those three are the weakest songs in the bunch. I used to hate Out Ta Get Me (And I think the "fucking innocent" verses are kind of unneeded), but it's grown on me more and more with each listen. The opening gets me everytime.
