I've only heard people over 30 say rock is dead because they think all new bands are shit.

There are good bands, but rock hasn't evolved as a genre and hasn't had a significant cultural impact since the grunge movement in the early 90s. Moreover, the majority of people under 20-25, at least where I live (but I think it's not much different elsewhere), listens to other stuff (hip hop, dance music, pop) and doesn't relate to rock except maybe for older bands they know from there parents. Rock used to be music mainly for the young and it doesn't seem to be anymore. In this sense, it's dead, unless...

Some of you just need to understand that Axl will not get his voice back as it was back then.. I think the rasp just happens when it happens.. and for me it doesn't sound like the natural rasp that he had back in 91, 92 and 93. But what do I know? :)

But I love this whole thing that is going on even if it is the same setlist, no rasp and what else you people are complaining about..

I agree that his current raspy voice (including the AC/DC shows) is not his 91-93 voice. Not totally different, but not the same either. It doesn't mean it isn't good, it's just different. There are songs though (Out Ta Get Me, Nightrain and parts of others) where his voice is very close, even identical, to his old one.

I think he has control of his voice. Some days it's in better shape than others and he knows it, so he goes for all of it. On the days when he feels it weaker, he goes raspy on selected parts.

I haven't read the book, but Mick Wall recently apologized for writing it and took it off the market.

Did he really? Well, good for him for doing that. I have to say it's something I never expected from him, but that's very cool that he apologized and pulled the book.

Yes, I was positively surprised, too. Here's the post from his blog, for whoever is interested and hasn't seen it when I posted it in another thread:

Jeff Buckley (i'm curious if there is a connection, i don't have idea)

Jeff Buckley covered Leonard Cohen's Hallellujah, Myles Kennedy has performed the same song live.

Duff named his daughter Grace after Jeff Buckley's album.

A Leonard Cohen song (Everybody Knows iirc) was used as intro to the GnR shows during the UYI tour.

Has anyone read Mick Wall's book? Heard it's shite so I'm not about to give it a go, but I'm curious. What did it say? Anything we didn't already know?

It's shite. There are a lot of inaccuracies (the title says he's "William Axl Rose"...uh, no, he's not) and it's really subjective; Wall has an axe to grind with Axl and he does. There's a ridiculous passage where he basically implies Axl's brother is a moron because he doesn't know what an egg cup is (in America who the hell uses those?!) and makes fun of his accent. Etc.

I haven't read the book, but Mick Wall recently apologized for writing it and took it off the market.

@Lumikki, thanks for posting these German articles. Even if some things in them are just gossip, they are very interesting.

@killuridols, Faith No More, who were opening for them during those European shows and had been talking a lot to the media (most of it was shit talk about GnR and Axl), had said that they had heard from the crew that Stephanie had cheated on Axl with Warren Beatty and this is the reason he cancelled the show after Paris. I've read about this (and Axl's very bad state) somewhere else too, but I can't remember exactly.

@Frey, I'm replying here about the quoting. If you select a part of a post (including the quotes), a "quote this" message appears and then you click on it.

Well, I seem to be the oldest here, I'm 51, and from Scotland.  It's freezing cold, and raining.   :max:

Gotcha beat.  I'm 57 and grew up on 70's hard rock.  What a treat to find AFD, probably in '88.  Been a GnR fan to varying degrees ever since, and now it's like  :headbang:.

And I thought I was the oldest here. It's a consolation that I'm not (j/k). I'm 45 and I'm from Greece (and I know where everyone's country is )

Last summer/fall, when the news of the possibility of GNR reuniting started to gain steam, I read some article where some guy who was supposedly in the know claimed that a big reason why Axl and Slash fell out was over Michael Jackson.

He claimed that Axl, having been a victim of child sexual abuse himself, felt betrayed and angered that Slash would work with Michael Jackson after the allegations of MJ abusing kids was known. Axl allegedly couldn't get past it, and as a result, it played a major factor in the split.

If there was any truth to that I doubt Axl would've publicly named MJ as one of his all time favourite singers recently.

It is true, at least if you believe Marc Canter.

Marc Canter said in the recent BBC documentary that Axl was upset about Slash working with someone that Axl considered a child molestor. Considering Axl's childhood and everything I dont find this hard to believe.

I don't think this is the main reason why Axl was upset with Slash, but I do think it's one of many.

Doug Goldstein said it as well in a 2015 interview.

I agree that this story may be true, but not Axl's biggest issue with Slash; otherwise, he would have said something at least hinting to it.

  8. I think the op's question has been answered by most of the posters, mainly by @Nintari, @Free Bird, @thunderram and @EvanG.

Izzy's contribution is acknowledged and appreciated by the vast majority of the fans that have been following the band closely. He is underrated among the casual fans and the general rock public, because for them a band is the singer and the lead guitarist, with the other members' role being complementary to the duo. Izzy's low profile public persona has been a factor as well. Another characteristic example of this is Malcolm Young; although his importance in AC/DC was even bigger than Izzy's in GnR, for casual fans AC/DC is firstly Angus and then the singer.

I would add that Izzy's importance wasn't limited to songwriting and guitar playing. His role was crucial in the band's dynamics, having been the balancing factor between Axl and Slash and the only one who could talk some sense into Axl (Duff, for various reasons, wasn't able to play that role back then); after Izzy left, the band became highly dysfunctional.

GnR had three main songwriters, complemented by a fourth (Duff). Appetite, as a product of co-writing and collaborative work, was the fruitful result of the common ground between them as well as of the collision of different perspectives and influences.

After Appetite, the distance between perspectives had grown. The Illusions, in which the three of them peaked as separate songwriters, are indicative of what the band would have evolved into, if each one's "vision" had prevailed over the others or if one of them had been main songwriter with the others adding and playing/singing on the songs. I think that in any of the three cases, the result would have been inferior. If the one had been Izzy (since the thread is about him), post AFD GnR would have been at best a band at the level of, say, The Black Crowes; which is fine, but it doesn't make a great band.

Axl, Slash and Izzy were all very important as songwriters and players/performers. And Duff, apart from his contributions to songwriting, was (along with Steven on AFD) very important to the band's sound. I don't understand why some posters feel the need to stress Izzy's contribution by degrading the others'.

This reminds me... I came across this video some months ago, but was too scared to even ask WTF that is. But I guess this here is the right place to ask.

SO WTF IS THIS? CAN ANYONE PLEASE EXPLAIN?

As far as I can tell this is literally Steven playing himself in a D-grade movie.

Playing himself sucking other guys' dicks in public toilets. Playing himself getting raped in the ass by a serial killer. And getting killed with a power drill.

I'm just ??? :scared::shocked::o Why the fuck would you do that??? I know Steven had some serious low points, but that's no reason to act out sucking dick and letting yourself get raped for a weird low budget movie or whatever the fuck that is.

I guess don't watch that video if you are sensitive or care about Steven Adler? Contains dirty bathroom blowjobs, necrophilia, rape, graphic death and Adler humiliating himself?

I don't think he plays himself. It's just a part in a cult b-movie, a fictional character, even if there is a loose connection to Adler's real life experiences. Maybe Steven needed the money or the guy who made the movie is his friend or whatever, but I don't see anything wrong (except the generally low quality of the movie).

I consider his participation in that rehab reality show much more humiliating.
