  1. The most impressive part is that the tempo is so close that the audio pretty much syncs up.

As for the point of the video, I wish I was still 16, but I'm not.  There is pretty much no singer that sounds the same at 55 as they did when they were 29.  Steven Tyler is the best that I've heard in maintaining his "signature sound" well into his 50's.

Axl still can sound like Axl in the lower registers and the screams.  Perhaps he can still hit the mid range rasp with a lot of effort on occasion but not consistently.  Either that or it hurts to do it.  It's definitely possible that he has done damage to his vocal chords over the years.  Remember that thing he used to do before SCOM on the UYI tour?  I'm sure those types of things add up over time especially if he wasn't using proper technique back then.

  2. Maybe they figured it will be hard for people to get to Marlins Park in rush hour for a 7pm start so they won't be disappointed if they miss the opening act!

Unfortunately, with pit tickets I'll have to try and listen to him unless I want to come late and be in the back of the pit.

Axl do need to rehearse. He messed up the lyrics in estranged and he had severe timing issues in a couple of other songs, coma for example. Frank also had some timing issues in estranged.

Maybe he just needs his contact lens prescription updated.  The lyrics are on teleprompters all around the stage.  All he has to do is look down!

I don't know Who he is!!

Apparently he is a country artist.  I never heard of him either.  Since I have pit tickets, I will have to listen to his set if I want a good spot in the pit.  I have no clue why they would choose him as the opening act when the venue is in the middle of one of the most Hispanic areas of the country.

There is still an insane amount of unsold seats for this show, and the opening act didn't help sell tickets.

I expect those upper deck seats to be selling for $20 within a month, if not on Ticketmaster then on the secondary market.

Last time I wasted time running numbers I estimated around 24k sold. Capacity is around 36k so while there are a lot unsold, they have sold around 2/3 of the capacity.

I'm not sure what they were smoking when they picked the opener. In Miami they would have been better off with Hansel y Raul.

US pits are small. You can arrive when the gates open or an hour before the show and still get a decent spot. You can see everything from the back row or even from the sides (where it's pretty wide open actually). As others said, on the rail and if you're short, you will not be able to see the other side of the stage. So if you're on Duff's side on the rail (and the US shows allow you to go to either side of the pit), you will probably only see the top of Slash's head when he's on his side of the stage. But they all move around and they all go to that centerpiece a lot (which makes the back row a great place for photography and being able to see the video effects on the screen.

Since I am barely 5'9", would you say that I'd be better off not being on the rail and have a better view farther back in the pit?  What would be the ideal location for best view at my height?  Center in front of the catwalk or closer on the side (but back a bit)?  Thanks!

Was there ever any reason given for the teleprompters? Because if I can remember the word to every GNR song, you'd think Axl could have. And he was usually the most sober one on stage back then.

Supposedly so that Axl could keep track of where he was in the song, not that he couldn't remember the lyrics.  Although videos like the WTTG above would argue against that since he was forgetting at the beginning.  He's not the only one to use them.  I know Aerosmith has them for Steven Tyler (and did 15+ years ago).

that looks like the receiver for headphones on Slash's back, I don't think he's ever worn them before, I know he's always talked negatively about them in the past...

Could also be transmitter for the guitar.  He must use in-ear monitors now because there aren't any monitors on stage that I can see.  The "monitor boxes" are all teleprompter screens as far as I can tell.  He wouldn't be able to play well without some kind of monitor.  There was a video that gnr posted of a song filmed from on stage near the drums.  All you could really make out were drums and some muddled background sounds that don't sound like music at all.

  9. You are making the assumption that they have released all the tickets for sale.  I don't know either way and haven't looked at any of the arena dates.  For last year's NA tour, they held back a large percentage and were releasing over time as it got closer to the show.  For the upcoming NA tour it looks like most tickets were released from the beginning, although they have released a couple of new sections for the Miami show recently.

If it's 7AM EST it will be announced in 34 minutes.

You missed my point that the thread title/time has an error.  EST stands for Eastern Standard Time.  Currently, the east coast is in Eastern Daylight Time.  Eastern Standard Time is 1 hour behind Eastern Daylight Time (hence "fall back").  Assuming the 7AM is correct, it should be listed as 7 AM EDT.

But you are correct in terms of what happens today in the rock world. Rock bands don't sell as many albums so touring is the main revenue source.

Not just Rock Bands.  All music acts.  Albums don't really sell well anymore.  The best revenue generator is probably iTunes but those are downloads of individual songs so people aren't being forced to buy albums (or high priced singles) to get the one or two songs they want.  Back in the day (all the way back in the 90's), an act could make huge amounts of money just selling albums.  That simply isn't possible anymore.  Sure you can make a good living but not become wealthy.  To make the big bucks, artists must use their popular songs to sell tickets (which are way more expensive than they used to be) to concerts.

"would hope at some point the five of them will laugh and pat each other on the back about the amazing songs they were able to bring into this world and for the time capsule of their youth afd becoming a classic.  i hope for their sake they are able to celebrate their accomplishments together in a way that matters to them" I can agree with everything you said there. The rest? not so much.

No 1 reason The AFD 5 were great is also the NO 1 reason why it should be left as it is. They were once wild, Axl was a maniac screaming his head off and jumping into the audience, Slash was completely out of control, running around drunk as he could get without poisoning himself, Duff Steven and Izzy were much the same... these days Axl is a fairly relaxed older man, he goes out and puts on a good show BUT he's not dangerous, he isn't gonna jump into to the crowd and crowd surf, the most he might do is walk off. Slash is still Slash but he's also reined himself in... basically, time has not stood still for the classic 5 or anyone else. Even if they managed to sound as good as they did in the 80s, people would still be disappointed because the band members are now 30yrs older and relatively safe... some things are better left alone, we have something that we NEVER thought we'd get and for me that's enough of a reunion.

Exactly.  There is no chance that the present day AFD5 could come up with an album like AFD.  Look at Aerosmith.  In order to continue to put out popular albums a mere 14 years after their debut album, they brought in outside songwriters to help.  Translated to GNR time, that would have been 2001.

Aerosmith were certainly great songwriters to come up with their early music that made them a success.  They realized that if they wanted to continue to put out "sellable" music, they needed help.

Since there is no chance for GNR to come up with a great album at this point, I'd prefer if somehow the AFD5 got together and came up with one or two good songs.  Put them out as singles and added bonuses on some greatest hits or AFD re-release.  What's the point of them putting out an album full of forgettable material just to take up more time on future set lists?

A reunion show would be cool and Steven would make a difference on a few songs vs. Frank but if the audience was blindfolded, would 99.9% people notice that Izzy was playing rhythm instead of Richard?

If Axl is being honest with himself (and we are with ourselves), his career as an artist peeked in the 1986-1988 time frame.  How many of us would want to live with the fact that our professional high point was reached between 24 and 26 years old.  For this reason, I think he's been trying to bury that period and somehow reinvigorate his cultural relevance for years.  Getting on stage for over an hour with Steven and Izzy to play the entire AFD album isn't going to help his fragile psyche.

I'd say the majority of successful musicians peak creatively before 30.  Once they "make it," they don't really have the experiences anymore to draw upon to inspire great new music.  A lot of the UYI stuff was written before the band got huge.

I can't really think of any great song written by a band in their 50's.  What do they write about?  Their kids?  The time the limo driver was late or some annoying brat sat next to them in first class and didn't let them sleep on a flight?
