If Robin hadn't left in 1999, probably GnR would never had become a three guitar band. Axl got Buckethead to replace him, then Robin returned and Axl wanted to keep them both. And then Axl went on with three guitar lineups, although probably there was uncertainty about whether to replace Buckethead. It seems guitarists were auditioned in 2004 including Bumblefoot, but no one was hired and then Bumblefoot was called at the last minute before the shows in 2006.

Maybe Axl was worried Finck would bail again?

At least they could carry on with a third guitarist

  2. You know what, I like her, she brings great backing vocals, energy, doesn't seem to have any bs with her and seems to love what she's doing which some other members lack.

As far as to what she's doing up there, I'm sure it wouldn't be popular if she just stood there between doing vocals or keyboard buckethead style.

Yeah. Loved it at the time and seems (weirdly) even better now. I think there remained a strange aura of mystery about the band and crucially there was a lot of hope in the future then. You never knew quite what was going to happen.

Insane to think back then that Slash would return and they'd end up boring people!

Give me Finck then over slash now any day

Thought his rhythm playing was the best of anyone that was ever in the band

And maybe it is already written but they havent figured out how to publish it

I've been a fan since afd first came out, followed every story, but don't recall anything about the shadow company! Great story.!

If Matt was in the band now imagine what he could teach Melissa!

I believe the Stephanie story, she just seemed needy for attention, could have all been to wind up axl or play with him

Well, there are completist in every fanbase that like to know everything about every member of the band... so I'm sure there's someone eager to read this. If I didn't have to subscribe I'd read this interview, I read one of her interviews a while back and thought she was pretty interesting even when talking about solo stuff that I don't really care about.

I take your point though, she is a member of the band, but she isn't essential. For me, she earns her keep from just the BVs she adds... It's impossible to tell what she is adding on songs like DTJ, She could be utilised more, looking for to the duet on the new record!! ;)

Yeah, her backing vocals are good, hate duffs, bumblefoot, gilby and Izzy also good.

    Like her on Madagascar

I've bumped it off my Chinese Democracy playlist now in favour of better leaked tracks from last year, but Scraped was a track that got me pumped when the album dropped in 2008.

Scraped is easily better than Shotgun Blues for me.

I was just thinking better than Shotgun Blues! Possibly better than So Fine as well.

I liked the intro they did live in 2009

Did you not listen to the sweet child intro from the golden gods awards? Or how he raped the end of the patience solo with his bullshit?

    It was bad!

He was ok in when he first joined.

I always think if he was asked to jam something on the spot he'd struggle, where most other gnr guitarists could probably do it comfortably

Pretty simple. Anyone going to see Gilby would most likely be a 'die hard' GN'R concerts attract casuals, non fans, etc etc. So of course the diehards in a smaller space or going to be more energetic.

    We're back on topic!

That's a good point, I'm sure they could get the crowd going a bit more if they try, I suppose Ashba tried and Bumble to a point

Yes, partly arrogance, but more so they’re just going through the motions. Axl interacting with the fans and going on a rant here and there though would make things look a little less rehearsed and more spontaneous.

Perhaps you’re correct, there’s just so many songs that they don’t play live, and there catalogue isn’t big to begin with. They mostly play the same songs with a small list of rotating songs.

Yeah, I agree about going through the motions, not even sure if they're aware.

Watched some of Coachella this morning, it was a whole lot more interesting with Axl in his chair! At least he spoke to the crowd and was  there

They’re just a very boring band. How could the band get excited to play the same exact fucking setlist, night in, night out for YEARS? I honestly don’t see how anyone gets excited for a gnr concert these days.

I'm sure if they interacted with the crowd more it may improve things?

    Is it partly arrogance?

I still like the show Gn'R put on, it still works for me but some things that I think will improve it substantially in the energy department:

    1. Axl prepares to a Gn'R show like it was an AC/DC show, actually going to rehearsals on a regular basis (probably never going to happen)

    2. the band releases a new album and change the setlist in a meaningful way so it feels fresh for the band and the crowd while still taking Axl's physical limitations into account while picking the tunes and the order they play their picks

    3. more Axl interaction with the crowd. Doesn't have to be a rant, just to make it feel a little more personal

    4. a leaner show with more varied solo spots cause you gotta have them so Axl can rest between songs but the bloated KOHD version comes to mind.

    * I feel like Slash still carries the show even if he does overplay some of the time. I remember his solo spot from not too long ago where there was an official live feed or something and it was outstanding, so he still got it imo. Maybe just lost inspiration from lack of new shit to play.

Yeah, they don't seem to connect with the crowd, to think we all wanted a reunion now we have this!

It absolutely does, it also absolutely does have to do with people watching every show online. Is still a highlight of the setlist so can stay as it is.

Tbh I only really think his clean voice suffer on NR (Wish he'd sing it in a lower voice) . I think YCBM mostly sounds fine (again this forum just loves a dogpile) the clean voice works in the verses and he rasps the breakdown.

I'm not really saying it shouldn't be in the setlist, but how can gilby make the crowd jump around and look excited than a band like gnr?

I guess he has more of a connection with the crowd?

I would say all the criticism of Richard and Melissa is a bit harsh as they seem to give it some energy

The Slash “noodling” thing is kind of bizarre because he doesn’t really do it any more now than he did in the past.
A lot of Slash’s outro solos are improvised and will change night to night. It’s been that way since the 80s.

Perhaps he plays a little faster at times.

I think the “noodling” thing started on the forums because he wasn’t really bothered with This I Love. He probably just genuinely hates the song. Doesn’t seem like something that would be up his street.

I hate to be cynical, but Slash was getting a lot of praise for been the star of the show early on. And he really is. The moaning about “noodling” is just some people’s way of trying to deflect the criticism from were it is really deserved.

I don't know, the noodling doesn't go anywhere now, he did always do extended solos but they were almost like they were played with feel

    Big disagree there, imo

KOHD remains one of the highlights of the set and everyone I know that see's them live praised it. Also one of Axl's best vocals.

Now would it be cool to switch it up a bit (acoustic like in 93?) sure. But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Genuinely don't get the Frank hate.

I don't hate Frank either, seems solid and a nice guy, just wish his sound had a bit more bounce

Has anyone seen the gilby video?
