Hope they keep Hard Skool in the set so I can hear it live in Boston. Would be happy to have Perhaps instead of Absurd

At the Glasgow gig, Absurd got a FAR better reception than HS. Axl struggles on HS live unfortunately and it doesn’t sound great at all. Slash clearly gets a kick out of playing it too.

Have a feeling the actual campaign will officially launch on Monday.

    For this single….or something more?

I’d be surprised if the solo is different to what Slash was doing at the rehearsals but time will tell.

Which is a shame because that wasn’t particularly great at all. Fincks one was superb - served the song so well.

At least the magic 8-ball on topic. Hardschool has nothing to do with school lol.

Someone pointed out the ‘lockers’ could have been a nod to the locker leaks. Which is actually quite funny. 🤣

The thing is that there's no publishing deal with Sanctuary, It was bought out by Universal years ago, so now Axl has a publishing deal with Universal, which we don't know if it ends at the same time the original Sanctuary deal was supposed to end.

Good point. So - it’s not a stretch to say that Universal just took on the deal and the 20 year term would still end next year? In fact - I wonder if Universal taking over the deal pissed him right off bearing in mind his ‘strained relationship’? 🤣 I suppose the counter argument is he will have likely got his cash up front for the sale of rights regardless….so what’s the problem? Imagine Sanctuary forking out good cash….to only get the benefit of one new album and a couple of reissues plus the not-very-substantial back catalog! 🤣

I disagree. I think it was professionally mixed indeed, but there's a lot of the punchy-ness that was present on the demos and were absent on the album. It lacks not only a more clear bass, but also the attack that the songs suggest.

While I like some of Bumble additions, his rhythm guitars are way too loud in the mix and often changed too much of the original arrangement. The worst was in Street of Dreams and Riad, where his guitar (right channel) pushed away to be condensed in the left channel the others (Richard/Paul and Robin) guitars.

Even some of the cool synths from the 2001/02 era were missing in the final version - not because it was edited out, but because it was so low in the mix that you can barely hear it or only noticeable on the stems.

I've seen this theory. Not impossible, but very unlikely that the deal is what it's preventing anything. I mean, they did release stuff lately, so it's not like they can't do anything.

My thinking is that a couple of singles is a whole different ball game to a full album and the push/promo it would get.

  3. I know this has been suggested a few times over the years but as we get closer to the 20 year mark (and end of the deal)…..I’m definitely more into the theory that we won’t see any album release until the publishing deal with Sanctuary is done. I think that’s up next year?

Of course this could be a complete ‘red herring’ and not be affecting anything other than procrastination!

You can STILL buy that limited CD on Amazon too 👍🤟

Not. Bad release at all! I'd kill for a 3D Blu ray of Houston or another particularly good '16 gig. Or even a best from 16-23 with Troubadour thrown in as a bonus!

I mean, I remember what a ball ache it was for Rock Fuel to get that product out, amazing it came out just before the reunion rumblings....a bookend farewell to that era if you like...

Which is like most bands after an initial 5 years or so as a band! 😲

When you say limited CD version….you mean the CD/BR combo as opposed to a single CD edition on its own?

Speaking for myself I don’t have an issue with him. He’s  just a hired hand and tows the line.

I would feel differently about him and my guess is others would too if this band had been releasing albums worth of material that Richard helped write over the last 20 years but that’s not the case. He is an excellent session musician.

Which is a balanced and fair take. But others really speak down on him and I can’t see exactly why they would have reason to other than being pissed that he is taking Izzy’s place. He doesn’t rock the boat, compliments the band well and is extremely versatile (particularly on the CD stuff).

Of course the songwriter part is fair enough although for all we know he HAS contributed stuff….we just haven’t bloody heard it yet! 🤣

I agree. I actually think a deluxe remastered Chinese Democracy might do better than the initial album release, from a press perspective.

Here’s a secret we all share on these Guns N’ Roses fan forums with regards to Chinese Democracy: it’s actually pretty good! It just has one fatal flaw: it was the single most mythical unreleased album in rock n’ roll history outside of the Beach Boys’ Smile. There’s no *way* it could have lived up to its expectations. For an album that took 13-14 years to make, an album shrouded in so much secrecy and so many rumors, it needed to be…well, it needed to be Rumours, by Fleetwood Mac. In other words, it needed to be an all-time classic. And it wasn’t. It sounded dated in parts, and it came out at a time when rock was at its most irrelevant, when hip hop reigned supreme and the throwback resurgence of 80s style hard rock and metal bands was still in its infancy. It sounded like yesterday’s fashion: an ode to 90s electronic and industrial styles in an era where that was no longer edgy or interesting. It just limped out of the gate with no promotion, no hype, nothing but a bizarre silence as the whole world collectively shrugged and moved on. It could have never lived up to the expectations that chained it.

But free of those chains? Free of those expectations, when we already know what it is? It’s pretty good. Not as good as Appetite or Use Your Illusion, but a surprisingly tuneful and aggressive experiment. A fascinating document into the mind of a recluse who had once taunted the world, conquered it, and then locked himself away in it after he’d chased away anyone who had ever loved him.

And that’s something that could actually get some good press and get some streams/vinyl sales: a critical reevaluation of Chinese Democracy in major publications, 20 years free from the weight of its own mystery. A new album isn’t supposed to sound dated, but a remaster doesn’t have that problem: the music, by definition, comes from another era,  and the modern critical evaluation of it removes it from its place in time and listens to  it with fresh ears, disregarding what’s cool or trending today. That’s an evaluation that I think Chinese Democracy would stand up quite well to. It would reframe the album not as the classic it should have been, not as the joke it was eventually expected to be, but finally as a fascinatingly adventurous album from a tortured artist who could never quite make anyone understand him.

    👏 Very well put.

Iommi is also going to release rest of the Tony Martin era Sabbath albums as a box set. Those albums aren't even available for streaming right now for whatever reason.

Iommi also plans to remix the Born Again album with Ian Gillan since they finally found those master tapes that they assumed were lost forever.

But we'll see when and if those will get released. Hopefully soon.

Yup - funnily enough I wanted to listen to Headless Cross yesterday and had to do it via YouTube! Can only be some daft rights issue with one of the record companies.

  7. It’s funny - Slash isn’t the most technically gifted guitarist in the world. But his strength is that he doesn’t need to be - he can (certainly back in the day) say more in 10 notes than some can say in a 100.

November Rain is a perfect example - it’s not overly difficult from a technical sense however but absolutely nails what it needs to convey AND is one of the most famous solos ever. Estranged too - plays the right notes, amount of notes and it’s stunning. Yet from a technical level it’s probably not that difficult.

We all have Perhaps. It’s fine. It’s an average GNR song with an above average piano breakdown at the end. Maybe Slash will improve the solo. I think if we are being completely honest the only reason everyone is interested in a perhaps official release is that we all hope the General comes as the second single.

I think the existing solo is tremendous….not sure who actually plays it (Finck?) but I’m not sure how it will work out with a new solo.

There is absolutely no commercial appeal for a Chinese Democracy re-release with bonus tracks in more than 15 years after it's original release. Even as an anniversary edition. It's not seen as a cherished/classic for a deluxe edition re-release. That would be a complete waste of money, energy and tracks that would be better marketed off as new material.

Hard disagree on this.  There is always a market for ‘Deluxe Editions’ - I’m a Black Sabbath fan and you can get deluxe editions of 80s albums Seventh Star and The Eternal Idol which were nothing close to being decent sellers.

Like anything - do it properly and price it right. I really hope CD gets a deluxe treatment…we know the material is there. Plus - CD really needs a reissue on vinyl as it’s out of print AND suffered from pressing problems.

If there is an Isolated vocal track of Ain't Goin' Down, i can totally put it on the AFD instrumental.
Already did the Crash Diet one, I'm able to use the AI with Vocals, instruments and mixing would be a different thing i'm not experienced in.

Here is the Crash Diet track:

Ahh. I have zero clue on what his stuff! I thought I had read that AI had been used for some recent Beatles reissue where it was originally all in mono but the AI was able to target instruments and then ‘isolate’ them so they could be remixed? TBF - I think they used some tech from Peter Jackson he used for his documentary.

I know there was a live recording of AGDNM which had different lyrics and wondered if the AI could ‘target’ the vocals and extract/isolate them? Just my brain working overtime!

Good job re that Crash Diet though. 👍

  11. Whilst I’m not in favour of AI/fakes….it’s an interesting task. I’d be more inclined to use AI to fix and/or enhance other material. I have literally no idea what the capabilities of your AI method are and this might be a bonus track thing but I’d be keen to know if any of the following is even possible: -

Can you use AI to take the live vocals of Ain’t Going Down No More and overlay it with the instrumental on the AFD set?

Can you clean up the audio on Ain’t Going Down from the UYI sessions? It’s got a horrible hiss which is very annoying.

Can AI be used to ‘clean up’ the West Arkeen stuff like Crash Diet? Quite crackly/hissy/flat sounding. Can the AI separate the instruments to allow a new mix?

Cheers if you can answer these questions!

  12. It’s pretty funny how Fortus is literally THE best qualified person to comment on this seeing as he did NB’s role before him AND has seen Slash up front and personal for almost 8 years! 🤣

It’s a legitimate point for folks to make re Fortus as a songwriter etc but on a purely technical level he is extremely accomplished - his work alone on the CD stuff shows that.

NB’s response is really bizarre - most folk know who he is and his credentials so to go off like that…..just plain weird.

Good on Fortus - he called it right and did it respectfully. I don’t doubt it’s a challenge to switch styles during a concert….but it’s obviously very attainable as Fortus himself has proved from his time?!

There's been two visits to studios recently. The first was only Slash with Mike Harting. Mike said it was a recording for a big American artist. This was the recording for Levoto (or whatever she's called). Then on a separate occasion both Axl and Slash visited a studio to listen to mixes. I don't think this is related to Slash's solo project, but more likely listening to new GN'R releases (live music or a forthcoming single) or live mixes in preparation for the show at Glastonbury.

I really hope it wasn’t that after the shambles at the start of that show! 🤣

That’s called ‘a bad mix’. For further information please listen to ‘…And Justice for All’ by Metallica, ‘Van Halen III’ by VH or ‘Be Here Now’ by Oasis.

a bad mix is not synonymous with a ‘demo’.

Bingo - it’s the mix that’s the problem…a remix without anything else done would be awesome.

re AJFA…..it’s odd but it works. Death Magnetic is a dreadful mix though - easily the one I wish they would revisit.

    Back on topic….🤣

my own personal idea is that the Beavan final mixes and subsequent mastered album would sound very similar to other things Beavan worked at back then - namely Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals by Marilyn Manson - of course I have no proof for that saying, and the truth might have been completely different.

but it sounds plausible to me.

I see how Chinese democracy the song could be engineered to sound like the songs on mechanical animals actually. Mechanical animals is very recognizable to me even if i hear a snippet, though I dont have the vocabulary to describe why that is.

I’ve been droning on about this for years. 🤣

Zodiac 13 absolutely sounds like something that could have been from Mechanical Animals sessions. Songwise AND sonically.

  16. Not that I can go anyway but I think Priest are a great sub. They might not pull in crazy numbers nowadays but in terms of legacy (and this festival is all about that) I think some forget how big they were in the 80s - particularly in the US. They still put on a great show too.

I actually wanted a them instead of Tool (never been a fan).

  17. I’m not saying this is the same….but Iron Maiden did something similar (albeit a bit more cryptic) to tease their last album. All sorts of random leaks and clues which hardcore fans found and it was legit.

Its not impossible all this ‘announcement due this week’….set lists…..todays stuff…..Perhaps sound checking is something kinda similar?
