GNR fans blaming Frank for how bad the band sound live is akin to blaming American Airlines for Flight 11 crashing into the World Trade Centre.
I think it's more along the lines of Frank being the drunk friend who spurred the driver on as they crashed. Axl is the driver in this scenario though, for sure.

I've wanted to create a complete LIVE version of the UYI albums. Problem is, they didn't play every song live and a couple of them are hard to come by. A decent sounding version, anyway.
I'm putting together a "best of classic Guns" compilation with what I consider to be the best performance (out of the ones I've heard obviously) of each song on AFD, LIES and UYI1+2.
Some of the less played songs don't have any strong performances, and some weren't played at all. That's life I guess.
Speaking of Nice Boys, the performance from Austin 1993 is very, very good.

Primeiramente de Rio and Maracana XPII are from Aces High and as far as I know they are MP3 sourced. i remember searching on old gnr bootleg sites and one of these guys who knows a lot about audio extracted the wave lenght (or whatever that was) from the GNR aces high CDs and he was so pissed because that wave lenght showed to him that they were MP3 sourced. It is a shame because the artwork is truly good, specially for the time when the CDs were released. Another good thing about these Rio 1991 Aces High CDs is that they have the full concert from the second night (jan 23) and it is priceless
Older CD bootlegs from the early 90s usually have much better sound, the italians are usually great. Some titles that come to my memory right now for the Rio shows are Rock in Rio and Brazil
Indiana has tons of early 90s versions on boot CD that you probably know like Dramas & Traumas etc. The trick i guess is to try and find which year it was made, usually the older the better, and some boot "companies" are also famous for the sound quality, i guess Kiss the Stone was one of them
Can't argue with what you're saying about the sourcing of Primeiramente or XPII. What I can say is that the Rock In Rio bootleg isn't exactly worlds apart from those. Somewhat better, but still a worse listening experience than competent AUD recordings.
I've never heard anything that sounds anywhere near as good as Frans' version of Indiana.
If anyone wants information about what specific sources I used in my compialtion, feel free to PM me. I'll be glad to help you out

oh fuck i love all of those... did you by any chance listen to the silver discs of rio 91 and indiana 91? some of them have great sound much better than youtube etc
Think what I have is Primeiramente de Rio, Maracana XPII and Frans' version of Indiana.
I think Axl sounded really bad in Rio 1991, and that in combination with the sound quality being very much sub-par seals the deal. Seriously, there are A LOT of audience recordings that are better quality-wise than Rio IMO.

I made my own compilation of what I think are the best performances from the UYI tour out of the ones that were recorded in good quality. Everything on here except for Dust In The Wind is SBD, and I've avoided the SBD performances I consider to have poor audio (RIR, Indiana, St. Louis, Chile and the second performance in Argentina 1993).
Some tracks appear multiple times because I like them, or because there are multiple strong performances.
Tracks:
01: Mr. Brownstone [Alpine Valley, WI 1991-05-24]

Would love to see an official release of footage from the Marquee shows if indeed it does exist.
We know there is good audio recordings as they used their first ever performance of Whole Lotta Rosie on the B side of the 12inch SCOM single. We also got their first performance of KOHD in the Afd Super Deluxe set. Out Ta Get Me was used from the Marquee for Live Era.
This would signify that these shows were an important part of the bands history to them, it was these shows that gave them a footprint in the UK and helped them create a real buzz. Axl even referenced playing the songs at the Marquee when they played London June 17th back in 2017.
What we have is actually their fourth performance of KOHD
They played it at the two prior Marquee gigs, and they played it twice on the 28th - we only have the second performance. Having video for it would be incredibly nice though.

A long time ago a downloaded the Buffalo show because I was there. The recording just seemed Ok. Last week, I decided to get a physical copy from a Japanese/Asian bootleg site. Even though it was a CD-R pressing, it was a huge upgrade - not sure if this source is circulating.
If it's good and you are up for sharing, you might want to consider making a rip of it.
-
It's kind of a long shot, but I guess you can read it as that Slash/GNR didn't have a good time leading up to the third gig. Sounds highly unlikely, especially given that at least Axl seemed to be in a good mood on the 28th.
-
As far as I know they only played it during late June and July of 1993, in other words only during certain parts of the European portion of Skin N' Bones, as well as the two dates in Argentina 1993. The version from the second night of Modena 1993 is indeed awesome, much more so than the FM broadcast. Skin N' Bones was really nice in that the acoustic portion of the sets were easy to record compared to their typical songs. Dead Flowers is another one of the 1993 only songs that I think they performed really quite well.

Don’t worry, I got you on the philly show, great performances, put it on my list to start the second page. It’s fantastic, especially with the drama during Jungle
I think the only 1991 recordings that I consider to be better than Philadelphia are the second night of Stockholm, Copenhagen, Wembley, and possibly the first two MSG gigs. November Rain and LALD from Philadelphia is GOAT in my book. They fucking nailed them, normally I can't stand listening to LALD, but the performance from Philly is just 10/10.
I don't think I've seen anyone talk about it specifically, but the recording of the first night at MSG 1991 that surfaced a year or two ago has some of the best crowd singing I've heard on any bootleg.

I think MTV wanted to get a new set anyway, and that's why they asked GNR to trash it?

I read your thoughts on the Noblesville show about enjoying Axl's fucked-up voice, so my guess is Axl's voice was pretty hoarse/rough on the Copenhagen show? By the way, is the Copenhagen show an audience recording?
Axl was screaming his throat out, doing full rasp SCOM for example.
Yeah, there's no soundboards of full shows between St. Louis and Tokyo. Quality is pretty mediocre for the Copenhagen gig, the one from the second night of Stockholm is much, much better.
-
It's a shame that it was down to him hurting himself, but the Euro 1991 shows are some of his best performances IMO. Him singing in Oslo would have either sounded epic, or like absolute garbage if his voice did fail. The recording from Copenhagen is just insane.

Frans has quite the ability to improve sound and image; I just dislike not hearing Izzy and his great riffs. The mono sound, and Izzy's tone doesn't separate well from Duff's bass bleed. Still though, it does have some of the essence of the '91 tour that is killer i suppose. Just wish we had more '91 footage, all the '91 footage seems flawed in some ways; whereas '92 has Chicago, Oklahoma, Paris, '93 has saskatoon and the two argentina shows. '91 is my favorite section of the UYI tour and I'd LOOOOOOOOOOOVe a high quality proshot.
If I had to pick a proshot out of all the shows they recorded, it would be one in July or August of 1991. Best period to me, it's so annoying that the complete proshot gigs lack in quality. But hey, at least there are some very respectable audience recordings. Sadly, I think 1991 be the least likely period for any proshot releases that might happen. I'd assume the band dislikes Izzy and Sorum more than they dislike Gilby and Adler.

I find it interesting you list the Ritz ‘88 show as one to avoid-but not the Noblesville show? Axl had a decent, but not great night at the Ritz— the recording of the show isn’t great either. But the 91 noblesville show has maybe 2 or 3 great Axl performances, and the show is a crappy recording as well. What do people appreciate about that Indiana show?
First of all, I think Fransad's version of Noblesville sounds (and looks for that matter) really quite good. It's not a Tokyo or Paris, but I think it's at least comparable to Chile 1992.
I also think the setlist is solid, with RNDTH, first performance of NR, and Perfect Crime. Only songs that I really feel is missing is YCBM and perhaps Nightrain.
Most importantly, I just like the way Axls' voice is really fucked up. He was still giving 110% which resulted in a unique sound. I can understand why people dislike it, but I do think anyone interested in boots should give it a go for sure. Some songs like Civil War do sound really bad IMO, but Rocket Queen and KOHD are great. I'm not saying that this is the one bootleg to end them all, just that I think that it's one of the relevant alternatives because it provides a bit of variety
Ritz 1988 is just San Diego 1988 with Axl singing worse, and a more limited setlist in my opinion.
-
1987: Marquee, Hammersmith, Ritz, Dane Couny
1988: San Diego, Late Show, Seattle, Shoreline Amphitheatre, Universal Studios, Nakano
1991: Noblesville, Philadelphia, the Euro shows, any of the December shows with a good quality recording.
Fuck 1992. Listen to any of the soundboards except Argentina I guess.
1993: Austin, Hartford, Saskatoon, Milton Keynes, first night of Argentina.
Shows that should be avoided at all cost: Ritz 1988 and Argentina 1992. Really weak performances from Axl.

As was said, it's highly likely to be the one from Pasha. Imsorry made a very nice sounding remaster.

I can see "Real Doll.com" having Axl rants or Axl screams while porno girls are moaning in the background. Lol kinda like an outro song...
I put Axls rant from Oklahoma over Oklahoma a while back, sounds surprisingly good.

One thing that's nice with Ritz 87 is that Izzy is LOUD in the mix, you can hear him way better than in Ritz 88. Makes Rocket Queen sound way better.
Thdre are a lot of very good 1987 performances. If you haven't listened to the one at Hammersmith Odeon, you should.
I think there are video bootlegs of Ritz 1991, not sure though.
-
In my opinion one of their better performances, much stronger than their famous performance there in Ferbruary 1988. Sad to see no one is talking about it, but I guess everyone might be a bit exhausted from the whole locker story.
I've also made something interesting related to it.
What do you think, which year did Guns sound best? 1987 all the way for me.

-
I think late 1987, summer of 1988 and June - August 1991 is where the band was at its best.
There are just so many amazing shows, Hammersmith Odeon, Chicago and Madison from 1987. Felt Forum, Seattle and Shoreline from 1988, Philadelphia, Shoreline, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Wembley from 1991.
I fail to see how the band ever sounded more powerful.

As the title says. More songs. No Axl vocals - Inside Out and 3 Dollar Pyramid are instrumentals, and the songs title "Tommy Demo #1" and "Tommy Demo #2" (aka Going Down) feature Tommy Stinson on vocals.
Top live performances!
