The Village material doesn't have the attention to detail because the Village material represents an early snapshot of the songs. Just look at what happend to Sorry or Shackler's Revenge in the 8 years or so that passed from the Village versions were recorded until Chinese Democracy came out. Most of the songs only existed in an early form where the attention was on the general instrumental arrangements.

As I have said before, I think all of the four singles we have had could easily have replaced songs on Chinese Democracy. Replacing If The World, This I Love, Scraped and Riad, with Perhaps, Hardskool, Absurd and The General would have made that record much, much better... in my subjective opinion. Not only that, but these four singles are very varied from simple straight-forward rocker like Hardskool, to punkish rarity like Absurd, to mid-tempo and introspective piano-driven ballad like Perhaps, and to the more experimental fusion of styles with very heavy subject matter like The General. Not sure I agree they don't have the same "attention to detail" as songs off Chinese Democracy.

Your opinion on this is so garbage dude it's unbelievable. Calling Absurd a "punkish rarity" LMFAO

  2. Fun little idea I thought up. Let's say you want to introduce a friend to GnR who either hasn't ever heard any of their music, or only casually knows of the hits like Sweet Child, Jungle, Paradise City.

Instead of tasking them with listening through a whole album, you put together an EP. What four songs would you have somebody listen to to give a good taste of the band?

    Mine would be:

    1. Perfect Crime

    2. It's So Easy

    3. Yesterdays

    4. Hair of the Dog

Great points. By now, I'd imagine they have complete versions of Zodiac and Quick song as well, and Berlin/Oklahoma.

You would imagine wouldn't you? Unfortunately, I think the likelihood is these songs never were worked on beyond what we have. Those instrumental demos are some of the rawest shit I've ever heard. There is no way an album comprising these songs, in a complete and finished state, were not released to follow up ChiDem. I hope I'm wrong.

Except that the releases don't really seem to be timed to propel ticket sales. Absurd was released a few dates into the 2021 touring, so that would work. But Hardskool was released at the tail-end of that tour with only a few more shows before the band would take a break for about 8 months before the next leg. Perhaps was released in the middle of the 2023 touring, instead of before the tour. And The General was released after the 2023 touring (although it was played at the very end of the tour).

You could argue that the intention was to release them more strategically to boost ticket sales but in true GN'R dysfunctional fashion they fucked that up so the singles were released more erratically. But let's get real, releasing these singles have close to zero effect on ticket sales alone. The vast majority of people attending these shows won't go there to hear a new GN'R song  It would work if the band coordinated the releases with doing press, to create more buzz about the upcoming shows, but of course that didn't happen and the singles alone got little media attention and barely didn't move the needle on ticket sales significantly.

So what is the purpose behind these releases then? Fuck if I know, but here's my theory: Axl wants his songs to come out because they mean a lot to him and he feels he kind of owes it to the songs themselves; with Slash and Duff in the band they have to contribute to the songs (because Axl always wants the current lineup to be part of the music he releases); he doesn't want to release them as an album because an album is a statement and requires a lot of additional work; he works on geological time and this is as quick he is able to drip-feed music.

While I understand your point, I just simply cannot agree. Everything this band does, for a long time now, is extremely calculated. It's not coincidence that both pairs of songs were released during US legs. I'm not saying the attempt is to boost ticket sales, they know people only come to hear the hits. It's just a cheap gimmick to make it look like there's something new and exciting happening. That's it.

Although I think the piecemeal approach was the best for these songs (because I wouldn't want the "reunion" album to be CD era songs - and I also think that, for the same reason, such an album wouldn't have been received well outside a small core of diehards), I agree that they (Axl) shouldn't wait that long to release them. They should have just released all of them within a year. So just release the rest of them and get over with it.

The same songs that would have made up this album are also not being received well outside a small core of diehards ... ??? It doesn't matter what way they chose to release them, the general public thinks these songs are garbage, and quite frankly, so do a lot of the diehards!

Well, there is a connotation to "leftover" suggesting that it is what remains when the best has been used, which doesn't automatically apply to the unreleased songs from the Chinese Democracy sessions. People who don't like the songs will tend to use that expression because of this connotation. Similarly to saying that November Rain and Don't Cry were leftovers from Appetite. Most people wouldn't use that term to describe those songs.

But those songs didn't take over 20 years to be released, and after the members that wrote and recorded the songs had long  been out of the band. These songs being released now have more credence to be dubbed leftovers than songs like YCBM

  7. It's amazing how people here will measure the level of vagueness of comments regarding new music, as if there's some answer to this mystery we dont already have. Everything is happening exactly as Slash said it would. We are due one more batch of ChiDem leftovers, whether it's one or two more songs. They released the first batch during the '21 Tour, and then the second batch during the '23 tour. There's obviously a formula being followed here. The next US leg of a GnR tour will most likely be in '25 and we will see the next (and most likely final) one or two ChiDem leftovers released. We'll continue to get these "vague" comments from Slash and Duff regarding NEW music, all the while never having ANYTHING materialize. Keep holding on to Mayhue's AFD Part 2 comments though lol

Personally, Slash’s work on Monsters is flawless for me and his guitar work on TG salvages the song IMO. I know many here will disagree, but having Slash on the latest material adds the organic vibe that makes it seem more GNR to me. I imagine any BH version of TG to be much more digital sounding, and thus even further from their signature sound.

Nothing about The General is the least bit organic my dude ....

Anyone else really loving The General still?

Say what you like about this band, I've genuinely loved all four of the standalone singles they've put from ABSURD to The General.

Haven't listened to it again since the day it was officially released. I also don't listen to Absurd, Hardskool or Perhaps at all. When I am in the mood to hear Hardskool, I will listen to the old leak. I will never on purpose listen to the official version, and that goes for Absurd as well.

Hard School just sounds like generic ‘dad rock’ to me, it’s got lots of guitars and drums but easily forgettable. Monsters has more of an edge to it which is more deserving of being in the Guns n Roses catalogue

Which is why it came and went so fast I heard it only one time on the radio after midnight ... Meanwhile LOST BY LINKIN PARK STILL GETS PLAYED ON 3 STATIONS MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY

    come on.

This has already been discussed to death. If you're one of those fans that think GnR is still the biggest band in the world and everybody at the shows goes crazy for ChiDem songs then okay I'm not arguing about it lol

It's also a bit sad how impressed grown men are with her popularity. Are we in high school or something?

No, what's sad is grown men disparaging and insulting her and her music for being popular. I believe the real culprit is a lot of sexual frustration
