  1. I won't be pretentious and I'll assume you know what I mean. The "helium voice" is his falsetto. He has rarely used his full natural voice (for the big notes, at least) in the last 10 years, he wouldn't be able to catch his breath given the shape he's in.

If Axl would do some cardio, and drop the keys to the songs down 1 semitone (like metallica does, mind you), he could give us what we want. Of course this will never happen, because the people he surrounds himself with wouldn't dare tell him he's less than perfect.

I hope the rest of the band get out after this tour. In fact, those guys should just get a new singer, lol. I'd be first in line.

it was his first fucking time singing since last tour. the fact that last tour he got better as it went along and the fact that the rasp was present now and then (meaning it wasnt totally gone like in 2001, 2002) should tell you something.

when he said it was the first time he sang Estranged in 18 years and said it was the 4th time the band played ever it he was being totally literal.

Lol, that's what I'm saying! Practice like you play. Not get off the couch after the whole band has practiced their ass off and play...

Edit- ok that's a bit much. but you get the point.

Powerage - The songs aren't down a half step already, that's their original key. The guitars are tuned a half step down from standard. The difference between the original and tuned down version would still only be half a step - which is negligible, especially live.

Anyway, D tuning (not drop D) doesn't sound bad at all. Every single Crue album used that tuning.

  2. Dave Mustaine is going thru a similar thing, all his highs are very laid back these days.

True, I mean I'd expect some difference due to aging. But the bulk of his songs are in a more comfortable range for him. The way Axl wrote his parts demand that he work his ass off, for damn near the whole time to hit those notes.

Rafal, I know what you mean, but he's singing in the original key. What I'm saying is to sing the songs in a lower key then they were written. They were written in D# or drop D so bring them down to D or drop C#.

Whatever suckerpunch, I haven't posted anything in like, 2 years. It took me till I saw a 350 pound Axl Rose before I said anything.

  4. Ugh...I really can't stand any of the answers in this thread. Granted, Strats will give you a cleaner picking sound, even if you have a Hum in the bridge. Gibsons (ie solidbody archtops) have a thicker sound but sound good if you know how to use them. I have both a Gibby and an Epi, the Epi plays decent enough, but that's because I replaced the pickups and I know how to set up a guitar properly. If you're looking for an entry-level priced guitar (Epi's) I stongly recommend Paul Reed Smith's SE line. They have MUCH higher QA standards than Gibson's Epiphone line. They play fantastically, and the worst thing to worry about is the pickups, easily replaced. If you can find an old big brand Japanese Lawsuit brand guitar (Burny, Greco, Aria) they'll be the same price as an Epi but much better.

Finally, the only good post in here. Epiphones are garbage unless you replace all the wiring and hardware - they sound like shit AND are unreliable. Avoid at all costs.

pawn shop guitar all the way. If you decide to stick with guitar - get a nice tube amp before you get a new one.

For a stones sound: Telecaster. But it's still gonna sound like shit without a nice tube amp.
