U2

"U2 is like, it's in space somewhere. There is no particular musical roots or heritage that we plug into." - Bono

I think the Irish influence is in growing up there, more than any music influence. It would be like Billy Joel or Lou Reed singing about New York.

Edge treats his guitar like a synthesizer more than he does a guitar. He has thousands of sounds programmed from over the years. I think that's part of why U2 went to Germany after the wall fell, too. It was the place to be at the time, and they were also looking to get a little bit of that feel on Achtung Baby that Bowie and Eno got on the three albums they worked together, plus the two with Iggy. His influences are more like guys like Robert Fripp who were doing stuff like that.
