Do you think Axl is in a similar postion to the one Van Halen was in after they released VH III? That album, like CD, completely tanked in the US (by VH standards) and the record company basically told them they had no interest unless they reunited with Dave. I wonder if Axl's record company has told him they don't care about another GNR album unless it's got Slash on it. It wouldn't surprise me if that were the case. I get the feeling that CD II will have to leak before the record company will even consider putting it out.

They made an attempt to reunite in 2000 for the reasons you mentioned, but Dave walked away from the deal. It would've made him a salaried employee, getting paid less than Mike. When Sam and Dave toured together, Dave refused to have Mike Anthony on stage with him, which came across as Ed and Dave were in the works for a reunion tour at that time.

Chinese Democracy was not the flop VH3 was:

1. CD received some good reviews, some excellent. VH3 was universally panned by both fans and critics.

2. 600k U.S. sales in 2008 is respectable from a rock band, when no one buys CDs anymore. In 1998, when everyone bought music via CDs, 500k was a total flop.

3. Chinese Democracy sold 3-5 million WW, VH3 was about 1.5 million WW, and again, that was ten years prior.

4. Chinese Democracy, while controversial, has its fans. VH3 is synonymous with critical/commercial flop (I actually like it)

I could see the label refusing to release anything under the GNR name unless Slash is involved. They scored pretty big with the Best Buy deal, so there's no reason to release any more albums unless they think they can turn a profit.

Doesn't work that way. The U.S. govt does not allow one party to hold the other to non contract explicit conditions. If Axl agreed to that then fine, but i think we all know he has not at least not up to this point. Basically what you are describing is extortion.

if thats how they feel Axl could force them to release him from his contract.

I dount that they must realise by now that Axl would habe to want do a reunion (as would the rest of the members) trying to force him will only make him dig his hells in harder they must know that surely?

I don't think that the record company said anything about Dave needing to be involved. VH went down because of the bad reception that Gary Charone got and the fact that EVH spent the next 5-6 years of his life drunk off of his ass. Then there was the greatest hits tour with Sammy, which was a moderate success, but Eddie was shit (I could have played a better solo piece missing a finger).

The years of alcoholism, cancer, divorce really took a toll on him. His last piece of released music was a soundtrack to a porno movie. He should have stayed with Sammy in 2003. He's the most stable lead singer that he ever had and he continues to put out music as a solo artist. Old VH has been back together (sans Michael Anthony) for a few years now.... Nothing. Not even a soundtrack song. At least new gnr had OMG before CD...

This is another thing. VH has two classic lineups to choose from and both lead singers have worked with VH post breakup. Even though classic members have joined GNR on stage it could hardly be considered a reunion.

They should have done a tour with Dave in 1998 for a 20th anniversary, then worked with Gary. They prob. would've had a new CD that would've been part VHIII, part DLR Band. Ed and Alex came off really badly in interviews after the VMA fallout, that the publicity worked against them, and a lot of the fanbase bailed on them. At least when Hagar replaced Dave, he brought in his own fanbase and VH were able to keep most of their fans. Dave was headlining arenas for about 5 years, but I think people started to bail after Skyscraper.

His Vegas show was badly timed... it was during the "sanitizing" of Vegas. Had it been a few years later when they reverted back to doing more explicit entertainment, and Setzer had that "Jump Jive and Wail" remake, he would've done fine. I just think he wanted to do more than being the former singer of Van Halen, and have to give him credit for trying different things out, even if he didn't succeed at it.

The radio gig, they didn't give him time to build an audience up. A lot of people think he should've gone to satellite radio with Howard, and gone on one of the rock channels at night. He still got a nice paycheck out of it.

The 2004 shows weren't all bad, the first show got bashed pretty hard, and Ed had a few meltdowns towards the end, but most of the reviews from that tour were good over bad. Valerie and Sam wrote about it.

But the 2007-2008 tour sounded like it hit a rough patch for a few months, and had to reschedule some shows.

Has gnr toured with a big or old school classic rock/metal band since 1993 though? Usually nowadays they get lesser known acts. I think it'd be a cool idea but im not getting my hopes up yet..

Van Halen toured with Ky-Mani Marley.

If GNR and VH toured together, the tickets would be comparable to a Billy Joel/ Elton John tour, and you would have the diehard fans getting the best seats and all the cheap seats filled, but a lot of empty seats in the middle.

I think Thin Lizzy would be a good opening act.
