They were both very drunk and didn't expect to win because they thought that a newer band would win because the record was already out a long time. What they didn't know is that the winner was picked out record sales and they sold a ton that year. So they just got hammered and when they won, they got up and made a mess of it. I don't know what Axl thought but I'm sure because of the extra press that came from it, they most likely sold some more records the next week. Just like the time Izzy peed on the plane. Whatever network airs the awards would have gotten a fine, and/or public address to air on primetime as a result. As a kid watching, I thought it was hilarious and expected. It made them seem even more cooler and legend to not give a fuck about rules.
