Threaded comments/direct replies - Yay or nay?

Do you prefer it on websites like Facebook when you can directly reply to comments, or do you prefer a long list of comments? Adding comments to my website, I'm personally leaning towards just having the long list of comments so that it's more visible, I find it annoying have to click to see all the nested comments on Facebook pages for bands and films etc., and I really didn't like the look of the old school message boards where you had all these staggered comments.

I think the quoting system here and the mention system on Facebook are both better solutions than threaded comments.

the quoting system is fine, but some people quote not only what they want to comment about, but quote what others quoted as well ( hum, well, if you understand what I am saying)
