Leaks vs. quality of the album

I have been thinking, coz I think a lot.

Why were these four songs leaked? These particular songs?

There are two possibilities:

1. Someone wanted to create a buzz around GNR's comeback and therefor decided to give the dedicated fans a sneak preview. Who did it and such isn't very important in this thread.

To get as much attention and hype as possible, they leaked the big guns - I mean four of the top drawer tunes from the new album. This way the songs will please those who wait and create a more positive buzz towards the comeback of the band that many critics and other motherfuckers can't wait to slaughter.

or

2. More logically, leaking some of the more average songs on an album would be a better idea. This way the fans would still get some big guns on the day of the release and the hype and attention surrounding the leaks would be just as big. Coz you know, the quality of these leaks aren't really what excites us is it? It's more the feeling; FINALLY!! THIS IS IT!! NEW MATERIAL AND A TOUR!!!

So if I was in charge, and I reckon some of you agree with me on this, I'd leak the silver and keep the gold safely in the pocket until the release.

So here's the deal:

If these four new songs are the big guns, then the album will still be great. Perhaps even sensational! I love the tunes, except I.R.S which I only like.

BUT,

If these are the fillers, the silver lining, then this album will be so good that I can't even describe it with words. Perhaps "The Blues" is the standard you know? WOW!

PS! I'll beat the shit out of every norwegian critic that gives the record a bad review anyway. I'm a patriot, and Guns n Roses is my country. Fiercely defended, proudly expressed.

Well Axl said that his favourite songs were TWAT, Better and The Blues. So therefore they are probably the best on the album; in saying this I would be suprised if the other songs are much better than this. The only reason would be if Axl is behind it all and him saying they were his favourites was all part of the plan. I doubt he is though. Also I think the new songs are very average, nothing compared to AFD. IRS is my favourite.

I read the RS interview where those three songs are highlighted "by Axl" as his favorite songs.

I think that'd be very strange of Axl to give a journalist his three favorites on the new album.

I'm certain he didn't, and I have no idea why the writer wrote that.

This would be Axl's response if asked about the best songs on an album:

"I don't know man. Check it out yourself."

Well Axl said that his favourite songs were TWAT, Better and The Blues. So therefore they are probably the best on the album;

That 's that they are Axl's favourites and songs of Axl's preference. But what he sees the best is not what most other people do. Look at Live Era '87-'93...bet you he must have called it a masterpiece but really the album is not much...rerecorded vocals on songs, the live versions of songs that were put on that album were not all of their best live performances. Some were rather shocking compared to what could have been given. Example You Could Be Mine, Pretty Tied Up, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Patience, Rocket Queen, Sweet Child O' Mine. So you never know, there may be much better songs on the album than just The Blues, Better and TWAT.

You cannot compare this to afd, its simply not possible. AFD was one in a million, 20 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you seriously expect something on that magnitude?????

For fucks sake, this album is not goin to be like afd!!!!!!!!!!!!! the style of music will be different, god im sick of people comparing new guns n roses to gnr of 20 years ago.

This album is new gnr, a new generation, do not expect anythin like afd in music or impact, you wont get it.

Everything is possible. My guess is that these four songs were leaked because they are in the most advanced stage (nearly finished), the other songs on the CD still need(ed) some work and logically weren't leaked for that reason.

You had some good ideas concerning the possibilites - and then you got to that....what?

Now that's a great line!

As to the question on leaks, look at how it happened. GnR management took their sweet time 'sqaushing' the leaks, and not very affectively at that. A lot of boards didn't take them down very fast, some still have not. The C&D letters were sent after stations were playing them in rotation for a week or so, real slow response. Only when Moderators directly asked management "can we play this?" was a "please don't" letter returned, and it was a couple days before it was even asked.

The quality of these tracks we hear is shize compared to what we'll hear in the end. But it's good enough to get the songs across, I love them all too. I'm actually excited it will be another phenomenon in R&R history. Been awhile since the world has had one.

A lot of you younger kids don't remember what was happening when GnR hit, and not to sound too preachy, but music was in a weird, stifled, place. Sure, you had "The Joshua Tree" doing great, and it's a great album. But it fit in well with mainstream at the time. Walk Like An Egyptian by The Bangles, Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung, Alone by Heart, these were the chart toppers. Rock then, well it was metal/ glam, a melding of 70's punk era glam mixed with a softer rock spin off of Sabbath and Zeppelin. As we all know all involved got stamped with the same name, as it went down in history, "Big Hair Bands". Cinderella, Whitesnake, Great White, Ratt, etc. Everything sounded sterile, processed, ...sound familiar? Though briefly looking the same as these bands, GnR took it back to the Sabbath/Zep street feel with a loss of makeup and addition of great music, something also missing at the time. I remember when Jungle hit, it was not easy in seeing this video to differenciate GnR from the other rock bands I just mentioned. Lot's of hairspray, Clockwork Orange ripp off, good song though I thought. It was "Sweet Child" that made people say "whoa, ok this is different, some real talent here". This is where great melody and street attitude smashed into the mainstream and made them the biggest thing going. They maintained that for 4 or 5 years, then the face of music changed again with Grunge. Somehow GnR were now the "overblown excess", and Kurt was the new "street attitude" artist. An interesting change to examine in GnR. I do not condemn it though, If Axl kept writing they, Nirvana and GnR, could have existed happily together on the music scene. They both vanished within a couple years, Axl's departure not long before Kurt's.

So, will it be "Appetite" again? No, that day has come and gone. Just like if someone came out today with black and white makeup, spewing fireballs, the day for that to be fresh and exciting is long passed. I see this album as a big hit coming though. As I say above today's R&R has again become very similar, in ways, to what we saw in 87, and great music always finds it's way to the top. The good news is this record has much more than just rediculous build up and hype, for inside lies the needed great music.

Record?

What the Fudge!

How long was I gone for?

Did Walt Disney get revived?

Review for what Record? Last I remember someone "leaked" Promos just to have the name of GNR's name out there, while the guy went to random public places to get more publicity for his Tour.

Thats it.

Not every album is going a "Patriotics" Selection of a Review.

That whole Patriotic quote pretty much makes any erection to die off easily.

Replace "GNR" and put "American", six months later .... There were no weapons of Mass Destruction, dont worry we will slap someone in the hands for giving us band information.

Replace it with "The Nacional Socialist German Worker" and four years later .... Oh thats right, we killed all those many people.

My point is, dont over do your "patrionism" over anything/ anyone, because fate has a method of kicking you in the ass one way or the other.

Many have an inflated head over something and with time they realize that it wasnt that much, it was just in your head.

I'm not expecting anything to be like AFD. If you would like to find somewhere I wrote I am expecting chinese Democracy to be similar to AFD then please, go ahead, show me.

And I know the new songs don't come anywhere near AFD or UYI for that matter, I don't claim they are. But if I want to compare to AFD you can't stop me.

Hmmmm, I havn't heard 'The Blues', however I have heard 'I.R.S.', 'There Was A Time', 'Better' and.... 'Catcher in the Rye'.

Does this mean there are 5 leaked tracks?

yes... :)

Ahhh, ok thanks.

no....

there are lots. Madagascar, The Blues, Rhiad/Rhyad whatever, and silkworms from 2002 tour

better, irs, twat and catcher from the recent little flurry.

and my theory is that Axl bashed out a couple of full mixes even though they weren't quite finished and sent em off to slash so he could learn them. slash gets high/pissed off with Axl/ attempts to speed up the process and they end up on the internet. Dizzy goes round to slash's to fight on behalf of his master as any good gimp would but slash is half black so he easily wins against a white guy with dreads. Dizzy is buried in Axl's back yard cos he knew he'd miss him and the reason the touring band hasnt been announced is because he search for a new keyboard player is gonna be on VH1 in the summer.

Actually, who leaked it is of primary importance because that will tell you why it was leaked. I guess it's not important as long as you assume the band/management were the source for the leaks. But if the source was a fan or an acquantaince of the band's, then it could have been leaked for various reasons...for example, out of spite. The leaker (wes) indicated it was obtained when Axl played the songs in a bar or strip club in Vegas in 2004. Personally I have a hard time believing this...but if true then it probably wasn't designed to create buzz. It was just a fan leaking music. Who knows why he picked now to do it?

I read the RS interview where those three songs are highlighted "by Axl" as his favorite songs.

The media can be pretty sad at times, but I doubt the guy just made this part up. Obviously the interview was real. This is what Axl said.

On a side note I am very suspicious that he mentions Better and a few weeks later it leaks, but that's just me.

As for big guns, I have read elsewhere that Prostitue is the biggest gun. That's the song they don't want leaked. darknemus, if he reads this, can elaborate. I think he mentioned that song was on the Trunk CD. Management went ballistic enough to prevent anyone who had the song from leaking it. Or something like that.

So you know Axl better and what he would say better than the person who talked with him and interviewed him? LOL Get real man.

Well I admit I do find it wierd that 1 month after Axl said 'TWAT' and 'Better' were amongst his favourites, they leaked on the internet. Now I think Axl may have put forward 4 and maybe more to show what Guns N' Roses were doing. I don't think he played the album at that nightclub, I think he played them a few of the songs. So maybe Axl put forward a few songs for the first single. Remember how GN'R would bring out cd's with like 3 songs on it which would be released i.e. Civil War EP? Well I think he could be doing a similar thing with this in that these songs will be released, but only demos of them were leaked.

I just hope we have more material. I won't really care if "Better", "The Blues", and "There Was A Time" are the big guns, because that's quite what they are. But if they aren't what Axl referred to as "The Big Guns", then I can't wait to see what's in store for us. But then again, I just want more material. As does eveyrone else on this forum. Maybe there will be a song about "Axl pouding Lindsay Lohan's clit" as Funeral put it. :P

If I were Axl I would follow the 2:nd strategy. Keep the gold and "release" the silver.

In R.S Axl mentioned The Blues, TWAT and Better as his fav.

He knew that we´ve heard The blues and maby he even knew that it was just a matter of time before Better and TWAT would be leaked.

If he knew that it was just a matter of time before those songs were leaked, then it would be very strategic of him by pointing out those songs as the big guns. Pionting out the silver as gold..

If that the case, it would be easyer to fulfil up the expectations when CD is finally released

It seems plausible these tracks were "leaked" to create a buzz before announcing the European tour dates. The album doesn't seem quite ready, and Axl probably doesn't want to set out lower key again with the same setlist as 2002, so these leaks may have been the smart compromise.

The timing would've made perfect sense...

That makes a lot of sense. Leak these songs and generate buzz in order to ensure you sell out the European tour and have some new songs to play.

I agree. I mean, if the album isn't really ready to be released until the autumn/christmas, then these leaks make perfect sense actually.

Dude, I think you figured it out! The leaks are all pre-tour material we'll have..

And in that case, it could well be the big guns..
