It's crazy, you get punk bands in it like Nirvana, hard rock bands like Pearl Jam and metal bands like Alice in Chains all lumped into one genre. It's madness. Just a bunch of good 90s Seattle music. bax Posted September 12, 2006 Share Posted September 12, 2006 I'm not a fan of labeling music, because it limits peoples' perception of a band as a single thing. Unfortunately most people need to classify music to understand it, so as far as that goes Pearl Jam was not a grunge band in any sense. Their sound was more classic rock than grunge in the beginning. Bands that would be considered grunge would be Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, although both of these did a lot of stuff you couldn't call grunge.
