Thank you, Noel. You've reminded me of the time you said how it was wrong for Jay Z to headline Glastonbury because only guitar bands are allowed to.

So Jay Z came out and played Wonderwall before that awesome 99 Problems/Back in Black mash-up.

    It's all on topic!

Noel Gallagher is always good for an acerbic quote. Like the time he did a DVD commentary for Oasis' videos, and hated them all.

Or the time he ripped on the launch of Jay-Z's Tidal streaming service – "Do these people think they're the fucking Avengers?"

  2. Jackie Chan/Checkmate. As it's one we've, y'know, heard a bit of. I'm always baffled by people who go, "I think Elvis Presley and the Monster of Soul aka Soul Monster is the best unreleased song" or whatever, based on nothing more than a title. How can you possibly judge anything about the song without hearing at least some of it? Or even a description?

  3. I hope they collar a female guest vocalist (Fergie? Lady Gaga?) and belt out Gimme Shelter. It's always baffled me that Slash had Izzy and Fergie right there in the studio when he was doing his solo album, and he didn't think to cover it.

I don't think Izzy's too keen on collaborating with teen-pop-singers, and I would absolutely hate to see Guns N' Roses working with Gaga/Beyonce/Bruno Mars/Adam Lambert or any of those guys.

I don't think I stand alone with this opinion.

I wouldn't consider myself a pop fan, but Fergie and Lady Gaga have fucking phenomenal voices. A lot of those singers are wasted doing pop, as a cursory glance at Fergie's live performances with Slash shows.

There are an awful lot of people who adopt a tribal stance to music – god forbid that a pop act should ever sully a rock act by collaborating with them. The difference between music fans who base their entire identity on hating one music genre or another, and the actual musicians in those bands, is that musicians recognise and appreciate talent regardless of genre. Hence why you'll see Slash collaborating and performing with everyone from Michael Jackson to Bob Dylan to Chic to, yes, Adam Lambert, while his more blinkered fans froth at the mouth.

  4. Unless it's Izzy, there's little point in adding anyone else to the mix. Richard will just get to do more. Rightly so. He and Slash will be a killer combo.

Considering it used to be Slash and a turned down Gilby at their biggest stadium shows, adding another salary to the bill seems unecessary. I always thought Axl had three guitarists so there was never a 'new Slash' who got to do all the lead work. Buckethead in particular was wasted for large chunks of the 2002 shows.

Yeah, I always got the impression that the three-guitar set-up was as much to do with stopping any one guitarist from becoming a Slash-style icon who could become a rival to Axl as it was to do with the band's sound. Which came back to bite him, in a way – it led to people saying, "It takes three guitarists to replace Slash."

  5. Buckethead was fucking magical. As good a player as Ron is, and as nice a person as he is, he just wasn't on the same level.

I do find myself wondering if, with the return of Slash and Duff, the floodgates will open on all that hoarded material that's been in circulation among a limited circle for years. Surely the CD remix album, VMA 2002 rehearsals and the Vegas '01 proshot aren't going to be worth anything to hoarders now.

  6. Frank makes perfect sense; the Fortus/Ferrer rhythm section is tried and tested, and has even proved it can work with Duff. For something with as much riding on it as the GN'R reunion, you need reliability; with the amounts of money being thrown around, you want as few volatile elements as possible. Axl has proved to promoters that his GN'R touring line-up can deliver the goods in a reliable, efficient manner. Effectively all they're doing is subbing out Slash for DJ and Bumblefoot from the 2014 SA touring line-up – why risk having the wheels fall off the wagon by introducing potentially destabilising elements like Sorum and Adler into the mix? It's just not worth the bother, and they can always bring them (and Izzy) in for fan-pleasing guest appearances.

  7. It's safe to say we will never hear Sorry, Madagascar, Scraped or Prostitute again for obvious reasons. And I don't think anyone who's currently in the conversation could actually replicate some of the Bucket/Ron parts.

Why? Axl has said that Sorry wasn't about the old band – it was pretty emphatically a response to the fans and management who wanted him to "shut up and sing". If Madagascar's about the old band, it's very oblique – and it'd be a good opportunity for Richard to take a solo spot, since he's done that before. Scraped... yeah, no. And Prostitute is less about the old band than it is about Axl's determination to not sell out. I think pretty much anything from Chinese Democracy is up for grabs, apart from maybe Shackler's, Scraped and Riad.

  8. Well we are allegedly getting two new recorded songs so, I could see an ep of some sort coming out.. I'm just not sure about big press. I could see a couple of interviews with axl but, I can't see him doing too much. Duff and slash have always done the most talking so I'd bet they would do most of the talking..

EP? I reckon it'll be a Best Of with a couple of new tracks. Axl had that two-disc best of that had artwork all ready to go, and the label screwed him over and released the Greatest Hits with SotD as a "new" track. Axl's got unfinished business there, and a Best Of album with some extra tracks would be the perfect way to promote Coachella and the tour. I'd imagine they'll be taken from the completed Chinese Democracy II tracks with some Slash and Duff overdubs, since Axl's lyrics seem to be the most time-consuming part of the process. Maybe Atlas Shrugged and The General? Or Jackie Chan?

Cancelled Kimmel appearance already. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

I'm going to cling to the notion that Axl saw the response to that recent picture of him, and realised that he needs to be in shape when he makes his first big public appearance – the story needs to be "Guns N' Roses are back and in top form!" and not "Fat Axl crawls back to his old bandmates."

  9. Some considerable time ago, I fantasised about a hybrid line-up consisting of: Axl/Slash/Duff/Fortus/Ferrer/Pitman/Dizzy, reasoning that it struck a balance between old and new, and that Slash and Duff would fit neatly into the already-established touring line-up. Izzy and other former members could guest as and when it suited them, and casual fans would be happy with Axl, Slash and Duff as a "reunion". Also – selfishly – I've always wanted to see Slash and Fortus on stage together.

I never thought it'd actually come to pass, because for Slash and Duff to come on board, Axl would have to screw over long-standing members like Bumblefoot and Stinson (this predated Duff's stint with the band). With their departures, I never dared hope that Slash and Duff would step in – but it's looking increasingly likely that this is what we're going to get. That makes me deliriously happy.

So, since my wildest fantasies seem to have come to pass, here are a few optimistic predictions:

Axl and Slash turn up on Kimmel. Axl announces "reunion" tour. Line-up is Axl/Slash/Duff/Fortus/Ferrer/Pitman/Dizzy. First gig is Coachella, followed by a stadium tour of the US and selected festivals in Europe. Izzy guests occasionally. Axl has hit the gym, got himself a voice coach, shed the weight and grown a beard, and is back on 2006 form.

GN'R Best Of album is released with two or three new tracks – likely drawn from the CD II sessions with Slash/Duff overdubs, or maybe the VR tracks from the Corey Taylor sessions, with Axl adding vocals (the former is more likely, since Axl's vocals seem to be the most time-consuming part of the process).

In 2017, the band mark the 30th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction with gigs featuring original AFD members. A self-titled album (Guns N' Roses) is released in time for the holiday season, drawn from the best of Axl's vault with Slash/Duff overdubs, and VR material. Izzy contributes as co-writer and guest rhythm guitar on several tracks (maybe even vocals?). Hopefully there's at least one Duff vocal song.

The original albums are remastered and re-released with additional material. Blu-ray/audio releases of classic-era gigs (Ritz '88!).

All is right with the world, and global peace is established.

Some years after the fuss over the reunion has blown over, GN'R quietly releases a comprehensive box set of the CD-era sessions, including the re-recorded AFD, for the hardcore fans.
