Agree with a lot of this. I don't think it was a fully Axl decision either. My personal opinion given the early rumors was that Duff is likely the major impediment. There's an interview some years back with Chris Jericho? where Duff is even downplaying Izzy being underrated (when he claimed the opposite in his book). Then in Matt Sorum's book he claims Duff said F*ck Izzy and Matt conveyed that Izzy said FU back. Then we have Steven, according to him, Duff was the one who called him up to say he was out and being replaced by Frank. Maybe that was a band decision, who knows. Either way, I do think Duff is playing a larger role in the band's decision making than he ever did in the past.

There are some interesting band dynamics going on there. Remember that early rumor years ago that Slash at the last minute after the deals were already in place - like days before the Coachella shows demanded a higher percentage cut, and that it came out of Duff's end? Or when Axl claimed that him running into Duff in that hotel in 2010 wasn't a coincidence (what Duff was claiming). There's some juicy dirt with how that reunion came together I imagine. I think money was a huge motivator to get this thing off the ground. It's not hard to see how the partners may not have wanted to split anything extra with someone else. Maybe in their minds, they had already left 20 years worth of cash on the table as it was.

Izzy has a history of fighting over money - true. But Izzy and Steven both claim they had to fight the band to get what they were owed. Who do we believe? Now if we're talking about the nu guns years and Izzy asking to be paid a certain figure for guest spots - I mean, the guy wants to be paid what he was worth? I can see where Axl is coming from here though.

I do think when Izzy was still in the mix, they likely had no plans for a major tour yet. So maybe Izzy was considering just a few reunion shows and wanted to be paid an equal share. That would make sense. Even as an Izzy fan, it's hard to imagine him being on a grueling 7 year touring schedule.

I like your point of view. To me, is was always about money with Izzy and between Axl and the other guys too. At the reunion point, having Izzy or not will not change anything regarding ticket sales, so it is reasoable that the original 3 didn't want to give an equal percentage or something crazy to Izzy. Also I don't know if Izzy was reliable enough to tour crazy dates non stop, I imagine richard traveling incognito just in case :D.

With Steven is different, it is hard for me to thinks that he was a real choice or consideration. The guy is far more unreliable than Izzy, but he would have taken the gig for free.

After 7 years of the reunion, with no new material coming from new collaboration between Axl, Slash and Duff, we can say that it is and was about money and it is fine!! We like seeing them play together, they are pros, give a hell out of a show and keep their reputation high. Are they friends? Maybe not, but who cares, in the end it's only business

I think he’s saying Bumble played on ChiDem, a lot. Wasn’t Fortus used minimally, if at all? Sorry if I’m wrong, pretty tired haha.

Yes! I mixed the credits thing, but I meant he played a lot on CD. Anyway, Fortus is the guy who has been milking this cow for over 20 years and he made a career out of touring with GNR, not bad!

Yes, some of Axl's comments suggest that he always saw Richard as the one to have the "Izzy" role (only as a guitar player/performer, obviously, not as a songwriter), and that had to do even with his physical resemblance with Izzy.

The question is why he wanted two guitar players for the "Slash" role. I think that he hadn't planned it that way originally, but when it happened to be able to have both Robin Finck and Buckethead, he liked the idea of having two lead guitarists, one of whom would be a shredder for the "gimmicky" and "impressive" stuff, so he stuck with it after Buckethead left (although the fact that Bumblefoot was brought in at the last minute might mean that Axl had second thoughts).

Yes, but despite Bumble joined in the last call, then he worked on chinese stuff for the final record and got credits if my memory serves. Richard I think does not have any credits on the songs, among all the guitarists he was always for sure the #3

that guy is a complete nutcase and a cancer. but doesnt surprise me lots of stupid americans listen to him. and stuff like this is the exact reason why axl will never be on his show. he would never want to be associated with subhumans like that

Axl chose to work with Buckethead and DJ Ashba, so he has plenty of tolerance for subhumans

  5. I really hope having Axl on Joe's podcast. Having him for 2 or 3 hours might be the new holy grail. Joe is not so much on GNR detail, such as we hard core fans are, so I don't think this interview make Axl unconfortable. Axl also like comedy/jokes a lot, so maybe this is the way to get into him. Fingers crossed! we never know, this is GNR

  6. I think it is time for Izzy. We all know there is no new record in the pipeline, maybe a couple songs, but the new surprise can be Izzy, and let the fans happy. Don't know if Izzy is reliable enough for touring during several dates, but this can be a refreshment for the band. I understand that there will be no more attendance than now, and business wise is worse, but taking Izzy back maybe means another 10 years of future to the band

  7. Axl struggles on TWAT because is not 2006 for him anymore and also because this song has no break between lines, so it is insane to fill al the words without taking a breath. Today I watched Madrid '06 and he skips lines too. But I know he has an issue in his middle tone, filling it with a weak falsetto. I don't know, he is better than 2021 and 2022, but he seems to be at the end of the line in terms of performance, we have to enjoy him while he is still able to pull it.

Slither is nothing at all like anything on CD. It's a proper riff based rocker. I think if you listen to Contraband and CD you can actually hear the creative differences that led to the band never recording together since.

I think Axl only does it live because Slash and Duff literally learned all of CD and probably the village stuff.

Totally agree! Contraband is raw rock IMO, no keyboards, synths, etc. CD is more complex and has more layers than an onion. Love Scott as a performer, different approach than Axl, but man, he was really good.

Contraband is a little bit generic, not pretencious, but a good picture of 2004. VR along with Audioslave can describe how those years were. We have to consider that by that time record labels were fried, no more crazy money was available, so this took a huge toll in the business and the bands of that monent. Until they figured out that touring with 100 bucks tickets was possible and here we are now

This was around the time Scott Weiland had suspected, or was paranoid about a GNR reunion, if I'm not mistaken. Velvet Revolver was slowly falling apart, even though they did put Libertad out. I think Duff put a lot of effort into Loaded, and when that maybe didn't do as well as expected, he probably made an effort to get back into GNR. I am a bit surprised he dosen't talk to Axl, but Ive been at a job for over 20 years, and there are people who you work with for years that leave, and you never hear from them again-it happens.  I did buy the latest Cowboys in the Campfire, it's pretty good. Tommy is right near the top for solo albums from former members for me

wow! So we had Slash visiting Axl's house in 2005 and now Duff about to join the tour in 2006? :wow:

  10. I can see Axl doing Rogan, they both are funny and Axl can have time to develop answers and not being a fast paced interview. Also Duff can be a chance, his history about recoverying from alcohol through martial arts can be something he can relate with Joe.

for me the production of those albums is perfect, and 30 years later don't sound outdated. Outdated for me is the first skid row album, or poison from alice cooper, but UYI or the black album are the best production an album can get.

For example Blackie re recorded The Crimson Idol a few years ago, and the original album (1992) sounds much better than the new records.

Until grunged emerged the productions of albums were very good, after 1993 everything changed for worse.

A good example black album vs load, the crimson idol vs still not black enough, spaguetti incident vs snakpit

Black album is far superior in terms of production/mixing in my opinion. Never mind came out the same year than UYI and the sound is more refreshing in my opinion and aged better. Anyway, there is not truth here, only points of view 😁
