Well, with some photos of Axl in the Wilderness Years, I have made this collage including up to 2005 (thanks Blackstar for the photo). Although the 2001 change from 94-98 is shocking, the 2002 change is even more so, Axl looked very different from 2001, and then in 2003 his face was back to 2001.

Most shocking to me was seeing him that fat in 1998. If you look at the 1997 picture he is still skinny but then he gain lot of weight, he was swollen as hell there (meds?), then he put lot of weight out and maybe there he got botox or some weird shit. I remember watching 2006 concerts and you can see how shiny his face is when he is sweating, I think because of botox.

I wonder if they had played RIR 2004 his look would be like 02/03 or the one in the last picture?

The first one is also from the Joint (Dec. 2001). He wore that glossy blue jacket at the shows

There are pictures, the one below, specifically, from late 2001 (I'm not sure if it's from the Joint shows) where his face looks stranger, but maybe it's the light or something:

Regarding the "jaw thing", it depends on the picture you look at. But definetly there is something with his skin pigmentation/colour that is odd in some pictures, but overall he looks great to me.

This last picture is awesome. He is dressed like the other picture with a girl we were discussing if was '00 or '01.

Where is this from? I guess it's 2000/2001.

Is it from Brazil? Looks like a theme party or something.

It looks like brazil, taking in count axl's look and hair

He's wearing the same outfit as in the last picture from your "2001 Brazil" album.

Rock & Pop Argentina radio? That was in Jan. 2001, after the Rio show, when he visited Argentina and Chile, right?

Yes! the interview must be somewhere on the internet

When I click on "Insert image from URL" and past the link of each image, I get a red backgroud and doesn't work. Well, anyway, you guys have the album links, hope this shed some light on "the dark years" ;)

It was played in Madrid (gig before RIR Lisbon) and, if my memory isn't failing, they didn't play anymore until 2009.

yes, I think they played it on late 2009 in Japan if my memory serves. TWAT to me is the best CD song, in many aspects, Axl is outstanding and bucket's solo is a beautiful piece.

  6. During HOB NYE 2000 he looked great to me, also in the other show on Dec 2001 when he had some rows. Looking back in 02 he didn't sound bad, he had clean voice but very powerful. The issue for everybody I think is that he looked weird with this fake hair and the way he was dressing. In 06 he looked and sounded kickass! This to me was the last chance he had to put out and tour a new album and we know this didn't happen

Axl was still relatively young at that point being only 38. He undeniably looked different from the last time he was really seen around 1993/94, the ruggedness of his looks was gone and his hair wa thicker and darker than what most people would remember.

I feel like his voice would've been in relatively good shape from the recording he probably did in 2000. I assume he rehearsed somewhat as well. It's been documented that his voice had changed after the UYI tour so it was never going to sound like his voice from the 90s. He was gradually using more clean vocals during the Chi-Dem sessions.

Regarding the Rio performance, I wonder if it was a lack of rehearsal on Axl's part. He most likely vacationed there for a few weeks before the show with little to no rehearsal.

Brain told in an interview (a long one in a drums podcast called "I hit that" I think) that before going to Rio Axl made them play the whole show instrumental only and him sitting in a couch listening for 2 hours. I think they played with Axl together on stage in HOB for the first time.

He knew he was getting a baby but he had to return home sooner (complications, hard trimester, early delivery?). I don't know but it is not uncommon. Frank was already part of the tour, likely because he was intended to take over when Brain had to leave anyway. I see no reason to assume there is something hidden here about Brain's departure.

Man, it is hard for me to believe that Brain being Brain and no Lars Ulrich quit GNR and turn down the amount of money and career he could get being on tour. I know that a baby can change your life, etc, but doesn't happen to often. If wasn't cool with Axl I would say that he was fired, but is not the case. And maybe 99% of us agree that Brain is better than Frank (IMO at least).

In a long interview Brain gave many years ago (a podcast or radio show) he mentioned that was hard to resign the amount of money they were getting and also that this kind of money is not in the industry anymore (talking end 90's/beg 2000's)

I disagree. Bryan really hasn't toured much or even done much with any bands since he left guns.  I think he is happy being at home with his family and making things like soundtracks.

He has stayed close with Guns and I'm sure he didn't want to take his job back from Frank.  I mean he introduced Melissa to Axl so he's obviously still close to the band

You're right about he didn't tour heavily after that, but rings my bell on why he quit after a few gigs in 2006 (despite of his child), he knew at the beginning his son was going to be born. I don't know, and since all former and current GNR members are "under contract" we can only speculate and guess.

  10. Does anybody believe the band was ready to tour again (RIR Lisbon I think) and because of Buckethead they cancelled? Seems like BS to me, and there is no single lead of the band rehearsing or being called by that time. Also, even Robin or Richard could have filled Bucket spot, since they were doing more AFD songs than CD by this time.

I also don't buy the Brain baby thing. Of course he had a child, but this was not the reason of his departure, otherwise he would have come back soon or later.
