  1. And PLEASE tell me that those of you who have easy access to marijuana (which I sadly do not, being in Japan and all) are getting blazed as fuck and watching this show.

Can confirm. Have yet to watch an episode of this sober.

Wasn't a huge fan of the evolution episode but the last two have been pretty awesome.

  2. How I Waited for Your Mother to Die So I Could Finally Be with Your Aunt Robin

I knew this would be the ending after the episode 'The Time Travelers' in season 8. I did not think they would execute it this poorly though. Why they decided to waste 21 episodes on a wedding weekend(that would be rendered irrelevant minutes in to the finale) and then attempt to cram entire lifetimes in to one hour is beyond me.

  3. That's a great post len.

I think if you're not really that into hip-hop then it's quite easy to dismiss the Wu-Tang clan as just a silly overblown gangster rap collective. But Len is right - there is nothing like the Wu-Tang Clan. I mean, if you think about how they recorded that debut, they just packed a small cramped box with talent and let 36 chambers happen. Thanks to a shitty budget they had to record it in this tiny studio packing 8/9 people in at once... RZA actually forced the members to battle each other to decide who got to appear on certain songs(one battle became Meth vs Chef). It's an environment in which they brought the best out of each other musically and came up with something completely unique and unusual. The bizarre, unpolished nature of it let the charisma of each member shine through. People (surprisingly) bought it and the landscape of the genre changed entirely.

The content itself is dark and violent but there's an underpinning philosophy running deep through it that's easy to miss on first listen. The idea of 'Supreme Mathematics' - that there is divinity in the numbers and the key to understanding the universe lies somwhere therein. The Five Percent Nation philosophy existed long before the Clan (Rakim, Big Daddy Kane) but they were much more explicit in their affiliation. Indeed some of the greatest music hip-hop has ever produced was created by guys who bought into this philosophy - Wu-Tang Clan, Brand Nubian, Nas, Public Enemy, Jay Electronica. A lot of the slang has its roots here too - "sup G'" originally meant "sup God" not "gangster", deriving from the Five Percent belief that each man was himself God personified.

Now the problem I have with this particular venture is a simple one. If a musician makes a conscious effort to have their music heard by the least amount of people possible then I can't help but come to the conclusion that it is not worth hearing. Even if they did manage to pull this off, and somebody buys it for millions, then that is an achievement in marketing and PR - not music.

  4. Is Raekwon part of this album?

So they're releasing 2 new albums this year?

Yeah, A Better Tommorow is still scheduled to be released later this year. This one is already finished and is lying in a vault somewhere in Morocco. The entire clan is on it plus Redman and "FC Barcelona soccer players".

Cool. When was it recorded? Why Morocco?

The project began about five years ago apparently. The artist who designed the box it's being kept in(Yahya) is British-Moroccan so I'm assuming that's why Morroco.

  5. http://www.avclub.com/article/wu-tang-clan-releasing-single-copy-album-you-can-o-202691

The sole copy of Once Upon A Time In Shaolin will be encased inside an engraved silver-and-nickel box designed by British-Moroccan artist Yahya, then taken on a tour through museums, art galleries, and festivals. There—and only there—visitors will be able to listen to all 128 minutes of its 31 songs on headphones, and only after enduring a rigorous security check to eliminate the risk of any recording devices. Once the album has completed that tour, it will then be sold to a single buyer for a price estimated to be “in the millions.”

This is ridiculous even by Wu standards.

  6. This is why I was gonna stop discussing this earlier. I like you, man, but you're often more interested in convincing yourself you've won an argument and that you know more than someone else than you are in understanding what you're debating. I understand that you don't really get monetary policy. It's complex. But don't act like you do. Peace.

Hey, you're the person who started the discussion regarding how deflation is the reason for inflation.

But you're not interested in having a discussion. You're trying to win a debate. It's like trying to converse with a brick wall composed entirely of graph paper and statistics(and the occasional all caps LOL).

  7. The US dollar's status as the world's reserve economy means it casts a shadow over the entire global economy. This renders it a risk-free asset. Foreigners are eager to hold as many dollar assets as they can meaning the US can borrow endlessley and make large, debt financed military commitments. But as the dollar continues to deprecate then it is no longer a risk free asset. The foreign demand for US bonds would decrease yet the US need to sell would only increase. That's the tipping point. The reason it hasn't happened yet? Oil is priced in US dollars. Everybody needs oil so every country needs a stockpile of dollars to buy it. Realising this, the United States mantains a huge military so they can control the oil.

Maybe if the Euro hadn't crashed and burned in 2009 then we might be looking at the prospect of a new reserve currency right about now. Or maybe the system is doomed to continue until the oil runs dry.

  8. "It’s the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you’re mad, then dangerous, then there’s a pause and then you can’t find anyone who disagrees with you."

  9. I didn't get the Derby blades specifically because of the comments in this thread. Went for Feather and it's been a smooth, comfortable shave. Being the only blade I've tried though I've nothing to compare it to.

  10. Also, if you read Fukunaga's latest interview, he doesn't even remember the spiral imagery being subtly associated with Audrey. For such a seemingly well planned show, that's very bizarre. Fukunaga tries to blame Audrey's behavior as being the product of her father's neglect, that she was trying to garner attention. But how would a child understand that gang rape and Yellow King imagery is the way to secure her father's attention?

Why did they have a scene depicting Audrey protecting her sister from a yellow crown? Why were they so concious of their grandfather's presence? That's not just something that people have falsely picked up on, it's what we've actually been pointed towards.

I interpreted his answer to mean that the focus on the show wasn't what the audience projected it to be. As has been pointed out in this thread, kids draw all sorts of stuff, including spirals. While I agree that the show allows for the audience to read into certain imagery, I don't begrudge the show for not following through, especially if the associations that people picked up upon were not intentional or meant to be associated with the larger murder plot. As Fukunaga points out, this is a show about the detectives, their lives, and how their jobs affect those around them. The points you outline in your second paragraph (Audrey and the yellow crown, suspicious grandfather) were in the end just foreshadowing of things to come for Audrey as Marty's daughter. While the "yellow king" victimized unknown women throughout the series, personal demons at Marty's home became eventual damage to one of Marty's daughters. Agreed, it's a far simpler explanation, and perhaps not as satisfying to those who spent weeks needlessly theorizing. But I would have a hard time calling the show dishonest.

Some of the details surrounding Audrey were clearly open to interpretation; the black stairs, the tiara - fair enough. But the scene where she arranges the dolls is not. It wasn't foreshadowing. It was a blatant call out to events that had already been partially revealed and were then expanded on in later episodes. It wasn't even in the background, it was front and centre. There's a lengthy reaction shot of Harrelson and the score emphasizes that this is something the audience should be paying attention to. If that scene had nothing to do with the plot(which now appears to be the case) then that is a very poor piece of directing.

I don't begrudge the show for not giving all the answers. I'm pretty sure that would have ruined it. I'm just not completely satisfied with the answers they did give.

  11. First episode served as a good introduction. Got it's point across and the CGI was very impressive. If I had one complaint it's that it felt a little dumbed down in some parts, but that's a minor quibble. I'm not expecting this to be better than the original and I'm glad NDT is stamping his own personality on the thing instead of attempting a straight imitation.

The tribute to Carl at the end was fitting. I've heard Neil tell the story before but that was a really beautiful piece of television.

  12. I liked the ending. Didn't love it - but I liked it. I'm going to give it another watch but I think my problem might have been that the third act is such a huge departure from the first two. I guess the clues were meant to be misleading but some of them were front and centre and ultimately contributed nothing to the plot - the stuff with Audrey especially. Some of the scenes in the finale just felt off too. That scene with Marty and his family in the hospital felt like a dream sequence. It was fucking bizarre. The giant star portal thing Rust sees is much too convenient to just explain away as PTSD hallucinations - because then what purpose does it serve? As a cheap plot device to distract Rust so he can get stabbed? He seems to be attuned to the darkness somehow (This is the place) so the show kind of hints at a supernatural element without ever really committing.

Rust Cohle ascends from his personal darkness and realises life is not meaningless. Essentially that's what the show was about. I'm not really sure how I feel about that just yet. I do know one thing - without the outstanding actors and director Pizzolatto had at his disposal, the weaknesses in the writing would have been much more evident. And because of that I doubt season 2 will ever reach the heights that this did(Cary Fukunaga isn't returning either.)

  13. Rita - When you are copy/pasting articles use the "Paste as Plain Text" button on the toolbar along the top. Nobody in their right mind is going to attempt to read something written in blue font against a grey background.

Will do. Thanks. I was trying to match the blue fonts were in the cut and paste (if you click link, they're half blue).

I don't see that button you referenced unless it is the top left icon.

  14. Last episode of How I Met Your Mother pretty much confirmed the theory I've had since an episode last season on what way they were going to finish this.

The mother has died. In the future flashbacks Ted is going back to Farhampton to visit her grave. It's the reason he's telling the story.
  15. Oddly enough, despite being a massive advocate of getting shit-faced, you won't find another like me, I agree with Shades here, you don't promote it. Don't un-promote it either, tell the truth about it, it's effects etc etc but to ACTUALLY promote it, thats just fuckin' silly. I mean whatever else you say about this shit, whatever the benefits are, however much of a good time you have with it, it's not ACTUALLY good for you is it, i mean everyone knows that. Thats not to say it's deadly or even likely to kill you or whatever but just cuz it don't drop you on the spot that don't mean it's good for you, i don't kid myself into thinking that anything that entails taking great lungfuls of thick smoke in is good for your health so to promote it is a bit silly.

And like, I'll freely admit knowing next to nothing about medical weed and people that use it for medicinal purposes but...i dunno, the whole thing seems a bit funny to me, on face value, what the fuck can you get that smoking weeds gonna make better? I shouldn't laugh cuz i freely admit my ignorance here but...like i've heard arthiritis it helps, how the fuck can that be, how the fuck can smoking gear in any way effect the excruciating pain caused by your cartilidge wearing away and your bones grinding, i mean if it can help that kind of fuckin' hardcore pain then why does its painkilling qualities not like...show themselves in my day to day use of it? Other than that i heard it helps people with cattaracts or something? I dunno shit about that either to be fair.

I mean I'm sure it does help somehow medically, i'd be silly to sit here in my ignorance and make rock solid assertions about this shit...does seem kinda dubious to me in some aspects though.

You'd be surprised to see the difference it makes to some people. If you have 40 minutes to spare give this a watch. I do get your point though - I don't try to convince myself it's good for me because thankfully I don't require medical treatment. At the end of the day I'm still inhaling burning plant matter into my lungs.

  16. Who keeps doing these surverys? Seems their only purpose is so people can feel oh so superior to those silly Americans. I'm assuming the questions are multiple choice because there's no way you get a result like "42% identified a 'motherboard' as the 'deck of a cruise ship'" otherwise.

    Vouchercloud.net study

Oh. A voucher website harvesting traffic by stamping their name on a hilarious "study".

  17. yeah there is nothing more disgusting than that shit. it was one of the reasons why limewire really came under fire. it was so bad the police in the US started labeling videos with titles suggesting under age sex was in the videos(the videos would be dead videos with nothing on them) and they would track people who downloaded those videos and then bust them.

Yeah P2P networks were ridiculous back in the day. It was almost impossible to search for anything on Limewire without being bombarded with completely irrelevant (and most definitely illegal) pornography.
