  1. Am i the only person that didn't get A Scanner Darkly, or more to the point couldn't get into it.

I was slightly disapointed in it, more because I wasnt familiar with the book and how strange it is. Loved the rotoscope and of course anything with Robert Downey Jr in it is worth watching, but was pretty unconvenional.

A Scanner Darkly happens to be Axl's favorite book.

The book is great. I still haven't seen the movie yet...I like the director but Keanu and Winona Ryder are putting me off from seeing it.

Nice sig btw...I was looking at it and thought "Wait a minute...something is a bit different about this last supper..." :P

  2. Lithiums mention of some french guy just reminded me of Leon :D

    LEON!

Personal favorite of mine. Had my Gary Oldman signature from that for awhile.

That reminds me I saw Dracula the one with Oldman great movie.

I laughed at every Keanu Reves part though.

I really don't know what Francis Ford Coppala was thinking with that one. Putting an amazing actor next to a silly one, it just magnified how stiff Keanu can be.

The studio wanted a young demographic according to Coppola.

  3. Sly since you obviously adore Mann's stuff you should see To Live And Die In LA if you havent already. It wasnt directed by Mann but rather William Friedkin (The Exorcist, French Connection) but it was so influenced by the asthetics of Miami Vice that Mann sued Friedkin, and lost.

Hmm...this movie has a cult following but for some reason it didn't quite work for me. Maybe I need to rewatch it again. I loved the car chase and that high glamor late 80's atmosphere...but the plot and characters left me a bit cold. I'm not a big Friedkin fan either...he fell off in a big way after the 70's...

I did enjoy Jade though in a trashy guilty pleasure way.... :P

    Kasanova: Thanks bud...

  4. There really isnt enough words to describe just how great of a movie Heat is, it's epic in scope but treats it's characters so delicately.

Moby really delivered on that film. God Moving Over The Face Of The Water is one of my favorite end themes and his cover of the Joy Division song New Dawn Fades is incredible. Watching Hannah race down the highway after McCaully while that plays is just breathtaking for me.

I don't know of too many other movies that work on that many levels.

Yeah it's definitely one of those movies where the stars aligned perfectly. What makes the movie great for me is the synergy between his shot composition and Dante Spinotti's cinematography. They complement each other incredibly well.

The only thing that doesn't quite work for me is the ending. It's a little hollywoodish. I would have let the thief kill the cop. It would have kept with Mann's trademark nihilism.

  5. God Moving Over The Face Of Water by Moby, anybody who likes the music should check out Auto Rock by Mogwai..... very moving music

If you like the Moby track you will love Auto Rock

Nice one. If you like that kind of ambient music, I'd highly recommend Lisa Gerard's work in The Insider soundtrack.

My favorite track from Heat is "Mystery Man" by Terje Rypdal.

  6. Id find it hard to not have Heat as my number one, visually stunning, great acting without a hint of ego,I would have liked Tom Sizemore to have played a bigger role but Val Kilmer really shone in this role,Ive never liked Moby but his song at the end is just perfect. For me Its Manns finest work though Manhunter is up there.Red Dragon isn't even close to being a good remake of this film.

Manhunter gets so much shit from a lot of people because it's so emblematic of it's time visually (the miami vice look). The movie is great and I prefer the subtle Hannibal Lector of this film to the showy Anthony Hopkins version. Definitely one of his best. Red Dragon was worthless.

Val Kilmer as you can tell from my avatar is my favorite actor in Heat. I wish he didn't turn down Jamie Foxx's role in Collateral.

  7. I adore Heat. I love the scene where McCauley's chasing Eadie up the hill when she's worked out who he is. It's early dawn, the lights are twinkling in the background and that shimmering piece of music plays.

That was a great scene. I believe the music is Moby...The visual style in that film is borrowed quite a bit from Mann's 80's work in Miami Vice, Manhunter and Thief.

He is a master of combing ethereal visuals with an ambient score...

  8. No Heat?

Fuck i forgot to put it on my list

I found TS a bit cheesy, departed was solid but not great,i haven't seen Blow out.

I thought this topic was about what films you've seen recently? I haven't seen HEAT in 2 weeks... :D

TS is a bit dated but it has all the main ingredients that I look for in a film. Escapism, atmosphere, strong visuals, snappy dialogue and a great score. I love Michelle Pfeiffer so that helps as well... B)

  9. Bitter Moon- Gets better every time I see it.

    Blow Out - Classic DePalma

La femme nikita - excellent thriller.

The Fabulous Baker Boys - if you like smooth jazz and atmosphere, highly recommended.

Tequila Sunrise - my all time favorite film.

Spanish Prisoner - decent. pretty weak for a mamet film though.

The Departed - meh. Infernal Affairs was much better.

Existenz - awesome even if I hate jennifer jason leigh.

  10. You're right, things are looking promising for '08...I'm hoping the system makes a huge comeback next year. Are you thinking of getting one? You have an x-box as well right?

I heard the wii is getting shut out of third party exclusives because of lack of online play and their rep as a "kiddy" console...you guys did get manhunt 2 which unfortunately was a lousy game...

I'm really looking forward to the nights sequel on the wii since the original was an amazing game...but the demos make it look kinda gay...

Yeah, I have both Wii have 360. I never wanted a PS3 until I played my friends one, and now I absolutely love it. So I'm saving up for one. I'll hopefully have enough for one by Jan. And yes, Manhunt was really lousy. It's a shame too, because it had so much potential to change the stereotype of kiddie Wii games. But oh well, hopefully No More Heroes will be good enough to attract some attention for mature games on the Wii, and thus more third party support.

I never played the original Nights, so I wouldn't get the same nostalgic feeling some of you have for the upcoming sequel. But yeah... from what I've seen it does look pretty gay. And I mean literally gay.

What game did you play on the ps3? Warhawk? I heard the online was amazing...but I never did get that game...

The original nights is coming out on ps2, if you haven't played it yet...PLAY IT... It's a classic. That's why this sequel has me scratching my head going "WTF"...it looks like it's being marketed to 9 yr old girls to be honest....

  11. Well, the PS3 has a bigger fanbase than you'd expect. But yeah, I get what you mean, and that is a big reason concering developers. But you know, there are very few good exclusives for the Wii right now as well. It normally takes a while for consoles to take off with great exclusives. In 08 you'll see exclusives such as MGS4, Gran Turismo5, Little Big Planet and Infamous. And that's just off the top of my head... I'm sure there's probably other good ones if I went digging for them. I dunno, all I'm saying is don't be too disappointed with your PS3 yet, it will probably come back even better than before starting 08.

And, I'm sort of getting sick of my Wii. Before Mario Galaxy, I wasn't playing it that much. In fact, I even stooped so low as to replay MP3 a THIRD time, just because there were no other good games to play. Although I haven't played DBZ: Budokai 3, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and SoulCalibur Legends yet... and all three of them look promising. The main thing I'm getting sick of with the Wii is the lack of online play (and even if there is online play, it's very basic).

  12. I'm pretty disappointed with the ps3. I loved the ps2 and invested in this system by looking at the hardware specs and it's potential. However, I only own 3 games, uncharted, ninja gaiden and motorstorm. That's all I felt were worth owning. A lot of the games are way overhyped (Heavenly Sword was pretty weak, Ratchet and Clank had great graphics but was repetitive, Resistance which was a generic sci fi shooter, etc) or the ports are much better on the xbox. I would have gotten an x-box if it wasn't for the shitty hardware. Gears of War looks amazing.

I thought the PS3 didn't do too bad for their first full year. They've really pulled themselves just recently with a lot of good games (granted, they're not all PS2 exclusive). Not to mention the software updates are pretty good to say the least (better than 360s).

Also, Gears of War is SUCH an overrated game.

I know it's overrated but it looks so cool man... :D

The ps3 is doing alright it's just that the exclusives aren't really that great yet. I talked to a developer for a gaming house recently and in his opinion the ps3 is in a precarious position. developers find it hard to code for and so the x-box is getting the better ports as well as exclusives. Why would they make exclusives for a system that has such a small user base and is so hard to code for right? By this reasoning the wii and x-box are pwning the ps3. I still think it has great potential, but man I'm starting to question my big investment...500 bucks was a lot of cash to put down for something I barely use....

are you getting sick of the wii yet? I've kept hearing on this forum and from my friends that it gets old quick. what do you say?

  13. I'm playing uncharted and it's a very cool game, it's almost like you're in some interactive indiana jones type film...still kinda bored during it though for some reason...

The wii also looks like so much fun, even though there are only 3 games I really care about, it looks like an awesome time. Mario Galaxy, Sonic zero gravity, and the Nights sequel...all look like quality gaming.

  14. I never could get into PJ much either, maybe it was Vedder's vocals. Ten is a classic but aside from that I didn't really venture into their other albums.

I was always an AIC/Soundgarden kinda guy... B)

    Nevermind

    Ten

    Dirt

    Superunknown

    In Utero

Those are must-buys. Temple of the Dog is also awesome.

  15. rockstar are probably the smartest not ea. Can't wait for manhunt 2 (if it dosn't get banned) and some other game they are releasing next year, the name seems to escape me.

Save your cash. Manhunt 2 truly blows. This is coming from a diehard fan of the first Manhunt. That is all time favorite game. Manhunt 2 is like the Terminator 3 of the series. Passable but a disgrace to the original. The kills are weak, the stealth is lame, there is no suspense and the story is pathetic.

The original manhunt is superior in every aspect compared to this game. This one is just a generic action/stealth game. They blur out the kills btw...it all gets old really quick.

  16. I have a Wii and I never play it. Last week I dropped it. But I havnet check to see if it's ok. Maybe I should get Galaxy to see what's up with it. The Mario franchise has to be the most cynical cash grab ever. They just bring out twenty titles a year of the same Donkey Kong game that everyone stopped playing after Operation Wolf. It seems people don't want innovation from games they just want 400 levels of cute italian hairdressers jumping of 2D boxes.

EA games are the best games company. Ever title is a winner from Fifa to the Simpson's Game. They are also the richest which means they is the smartest.

Mario and Luigi were plumbers dude...

I hear EA actually makes the crappiest games....
