    yes sure

thing is the (most likely unadultered) outtakes from GNR Lies that we got from alan niven dont sound strange/weird

but this one sounds a bit weird/strange to me

one thing i dont understand... is this song from the LLAS sessions (1986)? or from the GNR Lies (1988) sessions?

its labeled "1988" so i figure it is from the GNR Lies sessions, right?

the same sessions that we have the outtakes of Patience, Used To Love Her/Cornshucker, One in a Million and You're Crazy, right?

so why does this sounds so different from those takes?

    is it just the mixing?

    or has it been doctored?

GNR Lies sessions, yep, January '88.

My guess is that those Alan Niven outtakes were mixed at the time, together with the officially released tracks.  'Move To The City' was probably not mixed at the time, maybe it was something they recorded 'straight off the floor' with just a couple of mikes to test some shit out.  It was then found on the reels when researching the box set, and mixed with modern day equipment.

isnt axls voice a tad weird on this one?

also i am not sure if it is my phones but isnt axl voice like waaaaaaay up in the mix? like so much so that it gets hard to listen to the instrumentals properly when axl is singing?

also are the instrumentals "too clean"?

    has it been doctored?

    was it very badly mixed?

i dont trust GNR whatever was left of GNR anymore

Remember that outtakes are never going to sound exactly like the official releases they were recorded with (unless they were 100% finished at the time).  This track was probably left on the reels at the time (like 'SOYL'), unmixed and unmastered.  So it was worked on at a later date, might even have been a quicky job, which explains why it can sound drastically different from the familiar LLAS tracks.

    thanks! :)

    my source says:

    Rumbo Studios - 1988
01 Patience - The Alan Niven 1988 LIES Sessions
02 One in a Million - The Alan Niven 1988 LIES Sessions
03 You’re Crazy - The Alan Niven 1988 LIES Sessions [Officially Released & Mastered Version found on “Welcome To The Jungle (CDS)”]
04 Used To Love Her - The Alan Niven 1988 LIES Sessions
05 Cornshucker - The Alan Niven 1988 LIES Sessions

compared to your list, it means Patience from Alan Niven is the same as album version, or you forgot Patience in your list?

No, it's exactly the same, that's why I didn't list it.  MAYBE alt./rough mix at the most.  100% same take.

With outtakes, I meant the stuff that was never officially released.

any info about session studio and date in this particular case? because I can't see any matching session in any existing list of AFD/Lies sessions...

    there are supposed to be:

3 takes at Sound City studios (June 1986) - two regular takes (one circulating, the other one not) + one acoustic take (circulating)

1 take at Pasha Studios (August 1986)

    maybe @Nikki_Sixx could guess?

'Move To The City - Acoustic '88' is from the GNR Lies session in January '88.  Until the anouncement of the box set, it was unknown that this track was recorded at that session.  It is unheard and un-bootlegged.  The only things on the box set we hadn't heard are thus : 'Shadow Of Your Love' (Clink try-out session late '86', 'Move To The City' (acoustic from GNR Lies session early '88) and 'The Plague' and 'New Work Tune' (Sound City session June '86).

Here's what we know (and have) from the GNR Lies session with Mike Clink in January '88 :

    - Patience (offiically released on GNR Lies)

    - Used To Love Her (officially released on GNR Lies)

    - You're Crazy (officially released on GNR Lies)

    - One In A Million (officially released on GNR Lies)

    - You're Crazy [alt. take] (officially released as b-side before GNR Lies was even released)

    - Used To Love Her [alt. take] (available from Alan Niven's archive)

    - Cornchucker (available from Alan Niven's archive)

    - One In A Million (available from Alan Niven's archive)

    - Move To The City ( officially released on the AFD box set)

None of the outtakes above are on the box set, which makes the GNR Lies section on that box incomplete, just like the AFD section which misses the entire Mystic '85 and Pasha '86 sessions (19 songs !!!).

Throw in an overload of toys instead of music, no live shit WHATSOEVER, and the one time chance to release a comprehensive AFD legacy set is ruined forever ...

  5. All three Tokyo '92 shows were filmed by a Japanese film crew, for a possible vhs release in Japan.  There were problems (of a practical nature, staging etc.) during the first two nights, so the third night was chosen.  Eventually, it was released world wide.

In my opinion, all three shows count as some of the best of the whole UYI Tour.   Pretty long shows (3+ hours), great cross-section of all the material featured on the UYI tour, in line with the high standard of the late '91, early '92 North American shows.  In fact, these were some of the last of the really epic UYI Tour shows.  Pretty soon, a lot of these songs would fall by the wayside, in some cases never to return : 'Pretty Tied Up', 'Move To The City', 'Rocket Queen', 'Estranged', 'Locomotive', 'Coma', ...  Pretty soon, and for (basically) the rest of the '92 run, they would revert to a boring, standard, static setlist :

    https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/guns-n-roses/1992/stadio-delle-alpi-turin-italy-1bd61924.html

By June '93, they were playing sets under 2 hours ... :shrugs:

fair enough. so just a tweaked version of the old audience recording, pretending the sound is something groundbreaking like soundboard?

That 'old audience recording' is uncirculated, so they can pretend whatever they want, as long as we get it !!!

We didn't have ANY audio for this show up to now, this is the first time we get to hear 'Perfect Crime' in its '86 AFD5 pre-UYI incarnation.  That's HISTORIC.

so in the end, this is not a "leak", just someone took a better video transfer (available for years), mated it with audio track from Marc Canter's book, which he tweaked to sound correctly? am I right?

As far as I know/remember, there was no 'perfect crime' snippet included in the interactive part of Canter's book.

No.  Instead of releasing the definitive AFD boxset, they decided to skip the ENTIRE Pasha session (13 tracks incl. the SCOM you're referring to) AND the ENTIRE Mystic session (6 tracks).)

They even left out one of the Sound City tracks (Don't Cry) ...

But hey ... it's GNR, what did you expect ?!

These 2 leaks were the most exciting things that happened to the GNR world since january 2016!!

What do you mean ?  'Oh My God' and 'Silkworms' are not even GNR songs ...

The most exciting thing that happened to the GNR world since january 2016 is Saskatoon '93 surfacing, and the announcement of the official release of unreleased/unheard ('The Plague', 'Clink SOYL', ...) and/or previously unknown ('Move To The City' acoustic '88) studio recordings of the REAL GNR on the AFD box !

  11. What's up with this crap about 'Axl sang better than in Berlin, so fuck all you haters/complainers' ???

So because he sounded less awful than in Berlin, suddenly everything is okay ?

'Shadow Of Your Love' sounded better than expected, it even sounded good for someone his age, but if you really believe it sounded like '86 Axl, you have a serious hearing/mental disorder..

  12. So, Axl sings like shit because :

-> it's the fault of the stadium

Man, that's a lotta crap sounding stadiums around the world then

-> it's the first night after a long break

Then why does he 'do the Mickey' at every other show on this 'reunion' tour ?

    -> he's sick

He's sure sick a lot

    -> there were technical difficulties

So they've been having technical difficulties since '01 ?

-> you can't judge from Youtube vids, he sounds much better if you're there !

No he doesn't, I've seen him 12 times with his various cover bands, you either suck or you don't, Youtube doesn't change that one bit

-> the material is difficult to sing

Maybe he should practice ?  It didn't seem too difficult in Axl/DC ?

-> your expectations are too high

Your ticket prices are too high !

-> he's older, you can't expect him to sing like in his '30's

he was in his late 30's when he recorded the bulk of the ChiDem vocals (in the controlled environment of a studio!) and even THERE he sounds like Mickey Mouse.

-> why are you still here ?  why do you keep going to the shows ?

I am a GNR fan, this is a GNR forum, I'm discussing my favourite band, or what's left of it ... I keep going to the shows because 'GNR' at their worst is still better than most other bands !

    -> you're too negative

I wanted an AFD boxset with the complete AFD demos/outtakes/live shit, and I got a box full of toys.  Nuff said.

Maybe they should use pre-recorded vocals for McBob AND Axl ...

  16. Ok, to clear up any misunderstanding, that Bryn Bridenthal tape was sold on record.mecca a LONG time ago.

It contains the June '86 Sound City Sessions.  It's not complete though, it only contains the songs that were bootlegged.  It does not contain 'The Plague', etc.

Here's the tracklist of the Bryn Bridenthal tape (as available throught the link in the OP) :

    Side 1: Think About You/Welcome to the Jungle (with false start)/Don’t Cry/Nice Boys/Back Off Bitch/Anything Goes/Mama Kin/Heartbreak Hotel/Instrumental/Jumping Jack Flash/Jumping Jack Flash (acoustic jam)/Nightrain – East Coast Junkie/Think About You (partial, same version) Side 2: Out Ta Get Me/Rocket Queen/Nightrain/My Michelle/You’re Crazy/Paradise City/Move To The City/November Rain/Shadow Of Your Love/Reckless Life/Rocket Queen (partial, same version.)

Like you all know, the COMPLETE Sound City Sessions (including some tracks that were never bootlegged) will be officially released on the AFD reissue, so this tape is worthless.

As for the other stuff mentioned in this thread (missing Mates Rehearsal tracks, '85 rehearsal, ...), NONE of that has surfaced.  There's NO way of knowing what exists, aside from the stuff Marc Canter has told us about.  There might be dozens of things (rehearsals, demos, etc.) recorded between '85 and '96 we don't have a clue about ...

I've verified that the Saskatoon DVD was not used as the source for the CDs.

The intro on the CD is more of Since I Don't Have You, you can also hear the road crew checking Matt's drum kit, in the background.

Also, at the end of Paradise City, Slash says "Thank You Goodnight!" at 8:13.

That's not on the DVD either.

This proves the CD isn't just a DVD rip.

The audio was simply a victim of a bad mastering job by EVSD...

If only we could obtain the Saskatoon source tape...

Since the video is the screen feed, maybe the screen was dark for those extra minutes of intro/outro, and EVSD cut it off because they didn't want a dark screen for several minutes ?

This way they could still have sourced the audio on the CD's from a DVD with lossy audio, and edited the DVD afterwards before it went to press.

I still think they received it on DVDR, so the audio was allready lossy when they got it.  If they got it on VHS, they could have easily done a lossless audio transfer...
