By far the most entertaining thread we have going folks

My two cents... I don't think I've ever hated any lineups of GNR. The only lineup really tough to judge is the one with Tracii, Ole, and Gardner. Some may laugh at that but, it's completely true as all they literally did was invent the name Guns N Roses, no music or footage and that's fine. It is what it is and it's fact. Every other lineup is at least on camera so, that's what counts and that's what we can judge.

Of every GNR lineup since 2000, the current lineup is the best. And based on comments in here from many of you as well as comments on other boards and videos, it stands true. But nothing will ever beat the Appetite lineup. Nothing. If it wasn't for those 5 guys, who they were as people, creatively, musically, personally, and the music as well as the live shows that took place, we wouldn't be here discussing Guns n Roses today. We wouldn't be talking about a Robin Finck or DJ Ashba Sweet Child solo had Slash not wrote it, and played it. Played it from his soul so naturally, which is why Slash just conquers Robin, Bucket, Bumble and Dj. I can understand liking different guitar players in general, my father believes Page is the greatest of all time and my uncle thinks n one can touch Eddie Van Halen. But in the context of playing for Guns N Roses, I just don't see how anyone tops Slash, although some did fine and that's why I think this discussion intensified. And I knew that after last April's vegas shows, when I saw Slash play November Rain and Estranged again. Even sweet child. Some others like Robin played them well and were admirable for trying, but Slash just made it look so natural like those songs were just in him. Duff commented something similar on the Jericho podcast, and it's turned out to be true.

Not to get into too much of a rant but, after saying all of that, I continue to pray that we do at some pointin the upcoming year get the original 5 from Appetite on stage together again, even if it's only for 1 song. Those 5 were a gang, a fraternity, a family. They went thru so much personally, musically, everything. Something most bands nowadays have no clue about. Life is too short, and as awesome as the current lineup of GNR is, the Appetite lineup needs to reunite, They owe it to themselves and it'll be the final healing process with regard to their past for all 5 of them, even thugh I'm sure they all intend on rocking out for years to come.

    Oh yeah...they were a total disfunctional family...but...still a family

Pitman did quite a bit on TWAT and Madagascar too. I think he's all over CD really. He has production credits and things like that. It's all the towels fault!

Pitman was important in the CD concept and tracks...

In a realistic world just Dizzy is ok..no needs for two keyboards...and...I really dislike Melissa presence in GNR...don't make sense...

Former Guns N’ Roses bassist Tommy Stinson discussed his departure from the band in a newObserver interview.

“I’ll be honest with you, I am stoked about the Guns N’ Roses reunion. All those guys are my buddies, except I don’t really know Slash. I don’t think I’ve ever met him. But all those guys are my friends and I’m glad they’re out doing it but I’d be lying if I said I missed that gig.”

“I miss the people a whole lot and obviously you miss the fans and stuff like that. But where I’m at in life right now, that’s just a whole thing that…I’m not saying I’d never do it again but I’m kind of glad I moved on from that.

It really was a lot and it really required, sadly, because of my circumstances with my ex-wife, to have to put a whole lot of crazy shit into play just to be able to do those tours towards the end, because I had this young daughter.

I’m in a much better place. I’ve had some time to fuckin’ sort some shit out up here where my trajectory right now is way more manageable for the bandwidth that I have for it.”

He also discussed joining the band in the late 90’s.

“I was rehearsing in the same rehearsal hall as Josh Freese was and he had already joined the band and was playing with them. He just kinda joked at me, saying, “Hey, we need a bass player, you should come. Try it out, man! We’re just having fun with it.”

I kinda went out there on a lark. I learned a couple songs, just went out there for fun and to see what it was about and not a whole lot happened after that so I had the gig. I was like, ‘Sure. Why not?’

I mean the idea after I talked to Axl about it, you know, what he was trying to get done after everyone quit the band, I thought was pretty fuckin’ ballsy and cool. So I was kind of in for that reason.

THey didn't play their hearts out on the old material. They played in a professional way, like hired musicians. They didn't release an album, it wasn't up to them. Axl released an album featuring dozens of hired musicians, the "band" that made CD was different than the hired touring line-up. What potential did they show? With their solo spots and jams? That was mostly generic shit. Shows were, like I said, professionally well done from their part, outstanding is not the correct word. How can anyone prefer a cover band over 3/5 of an original band reuniting after 20+ years? It's not like this reunion will stop Axl from releaseing CD2, we all know he's retired as a musician and is now a full time entertainer.

Trust me, kid. You're not missing out on anything It was either reunion or retirement after 2014. Be glad Slash and Duff accepted to play those Axl songs you enjoy and that's it.

Why is this in any way unreasonable? (Though I'd take the 2006/07 band over the 2014 one). Some of us grew up with that line-up, they played their hearts out on the old material, they released an album that a lot of us enjoyed, they showed a lot of further potential as a creative unit (that was inexplicably never exploited properly by Rose) and their live shows (at least in 06-07 and 09-10) were far from "generally shite" they were outstanding...

I don't usually weigh up the reasons I like a band or artist using a logical checklist like the one you have above, I just go with my gut, and my gut feeling is that I wish the "reunion" hadn't happened.

"I wish the "reunion" hadn't happened"

    I'm with you bro.

I believed too much in the potential of the 2002 incarnation, and I wish it had worked and produced a lot of new and proper material.

But Robin & Buckethead also took There Was A Time and Better into the stratosphere. There would be no 'OMG Slash's This I Love solo' without Robin having done first.

This band would be 200% better with Buckethead and Brain back in the band imo.

    I agree bro.

Don't forget about deleting that blonde bitch from the equation...

It depends on what you look for in a band.

It's certainly better than the no fucks given Appetite For Democracy band although off the cuff, I'd say the 2009-2010 band was sharper.

Since we only have the ability to talk in circles given no new music, I'll restate my opinion of the 2002 lineup being the best lineup of Guns N' Roses bar none, no quarter given, although I quite like the 2006 band with Brain quite a bit as well. Phenomenally tight band.

I hold the UYI tour band in high esteem as well.

Buckethead belongs in heaven with the gods. Robin and Slash are respectable earthlings. I do not care for Bumblefoot in the slightest and DJ Ashba is not even worthy of comment.

    this.

  10. Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus recently wrote on Facebook about Guns N’ Roses’ current lineup, and why it’s so much better than the Chinese Democracy lineup.

Steve Major wrote on Facebook, “How lucky were we in St. Louis during the 80’s when we could go down to the landing and see a world class guitar player like Richard Fortus displaying guitar playing like no other? The Eyes, as well as Broken Toyz, OWNING the landing. Watching Richard play all over the world in the biggest stadiums brings a smile to my face. I love this band, and I personally liked this lineup. Lets face it, whatever your opinion of this band, they burst on the music scene like raging hurricane. Biggest band of that era, bar none. Keep killing it, Richard.”

Steve then linked to a Chinese Democracy lineup era live video “You Could Be Mine.”

Fortus responded, “Thanks Steve, if you liked THAT line up, you’re gonna love the current one! 100x better IMO. I really appreciate the support and kind words but (and I’m really not trying to be humble), but honestly, I was just very fortunate. I’m lucky to have come up in the St. Louis scene that was so full of amazing talent and of so many great music supporters.”
