What aspect of the lyrics does everyone hate? I see it either:
A.) too heartbreak lovey dovey
B.) every line's rhyme is the same sound ("know why, say goodbye, that I, her eyes, be wise, have to try, have inside, can't deny" etc)
C.) Too simple/straightforward/not as "complex" as UYI ballad lyrics (no metaphors, hyperboles, etc)
Or a combination of everything.
Or maybe something else
B pretty much, but the standard of lyrics in general dropped quite heavily when compared to the high points of UYI in my opinion. So C does play a role in my feelings towards this.

Not necessarily. Keep in mind, the plan for SMK was initially to record the next album in May before the Guns summer tour. Obviously that did not pan out. I think it's obvious that should Axl get Slash & Duff in the studio to contribute to the next album then that would take precedence for Slash.
I would love to see new music from my favourite band and would love to be proved wrong, but I don't think it will happen. I would be very excited to eat my words on this!

I find the whole thing a bit of a mess. The studio version of the solo is the best one I have heard for this song, probably the best thing in the song altogether. The lyrics are like a nursery rhyme.

Poor Axl.
I've never seen Slash play a Les Paul with a Bigsby on it. Not a great look for Axl either!

They should use some of that NITL tour money, hire a studio, get Axl to pull his head out of his arse and leave the tinkering at home and self fund a 12 track GN'R record.
Fuck the leftover Chinese stuff, it is probably tied up in lawsuits over ownership with the record company anyway.
They could take 3 months to write and record, then back on tour playing new songs and creating hype for the record while it is mixed and mastered.
They don't need a label to do it, just the motivation. Hopefully they have all this covered, people won't pay 100s of dollars to watch a 90s setlist forever.....

Killer man. Its interesting to see the kids say " shall we do the Do si Do or mosh?".
They were a great crowd! When you're playing to 20 somethings, they are far too preoccupied with what everyone else thinks of them to really cut loose and rock out. Unless they're 10 pints in....

Yeah we used radio mics for guitars, so we'd go out into the crowd and mingle, check the mix from the crowd's perspective. I am from Nottingham in the UK, Robin Hood country.

Thanks @AxlsFavoriteRose! Glad you like them. I will be adding more videos when I get the chance (original songs).

Hey people,
My friend sent some videos across to me a couple of weeks ago of our old band, he had stuff recorded from shitty little pubs and other places that we played at. One gig that stood out was this one, we helped out a friend once who organised county wide battle of the bands by doing a full set at a local school, part of the set was two GN'R covers; Mr Brownstone and 14 Years. The covers are a bit wonky in places - I can't sing anywhere near as good as Axl and the guitarist fucks up on both solos in some way, but considering back then we had foldback monitoring only and a full backline, it is to be expected, and the main thing is, we had a fucking good time playing the songs!

I think Don't Cry sounds the best only because he only uses a clean tone. (While Slash completely eclipses Izzy's clean guitar by doubling his rhythm on both channels when the distortion comes in). That being said, I'd rather hear Izzy's "less attack"-ey tone than not hear him at all.
I hope that someday they do a remaster with Izzy's guitar upped about 6-8 dB in the mix (and only Izzy hard panned left and Slash hard panned right) like this. (and also without that artificial reverb they applied on Matt's drums. Sounds tacky, especially on the intro drums on 14 years. If Axl wanted a bigger drum sound, he should've just told Matt to use bigger/deeper rack toms)
Izzy's guitar shouldve sounded like this. (Also, I love Izzy's co-lead next to Slashs lead on Estranged)
Perfect Crime! Great Izzy guitar take.

You will be great at production in time, given how young you are starting! I thought the drums may be a backing track, everything else on the kit sounded loud enough in the mix (I was using cheap earbud headphones to listen, but you still get an idea).
Your new amp sims sound good as well. As for me, I am at a dead end at the minute, you get to a point where you know you want stuff to sound better, but don't gave the skills to get there. Very frustrating.

Good work @AslatIE! Your rhythm tracks are tight and the overall mix sounds better than your CD recording. What gear did you use? I think your overlay for the most part sounded good, bit of a wobble on the section between the first chorus and second verse, but good overall.
The solo could do with some work; there were parts that were good, but some of it could do with some work. Mainly bends I think, you can do the fast stuff pretty good. The snare could do with being a bit louder, but I don't know if you can do that (if you're using a full kit backing track).
Really impressed dude, start working on your own stuff now!

Well being in my mid 30's that ship may have sailed, but i'm working on my 5 year old son!
Me too, 37 next year, but my 2 and a half year old asks for GN'R and does a pretty good Slash impression already, so I have hope. Plus, by the time he is in his late teens/early 20s, this type of music will be fashionable again.....

Oh man it's the reason i play the guitar, my mum was a pretty cool chick so i had access to all the greats in my house as a kid Jimi, Zep, Santana, Clapton etc but it wasn't till my friends brother played me AFD for the first time that i HAD to get a guitar. I used to isolate Slash and Izzy's tracks all the time on my stereo's graphic equalizer, i know their guitar tracks like the back of my hand! WTTJ is just insane.
Very similar to me, I started playing because of AFD and had exposure to the classics through my parents (Hendrix, Stones, Queen, Led Zep, Bowie etc), GN'R was the turning point though, coolest fucking thing in the world back in 1991!

The twin power also has to do with Izzy's tone. His tone is less aggressive on UYI rhythm guitars (his lead tone for the intro to Back off Bitch sounds good though). I don't know if it has to do with him maybe using a smidge less gain, the way the amp was mic'ed, using a different guitar/amp/pickups than with AFD.
I think Slash's UYI tone is great, it's specifically on the gold top LP that he uses on Estranged that I don't like. I remember reading somewhere that he changed his pickups to something other than alnico II's (IIRC i think because they were in the process of making his signature pickup) right before they went out on tour, which gave him the nasally tone
Yeah, that is it, Izzy had a crunchy tone on Appetite that complimented Slash's more treble-y tone. I think you're right about less gain for Izzy on UYI, I remember reading that they used some of his scratching tracks on the actual album as he was reluctant to record at that point.
There are a few parts on UYI that sounds pretty good for Izzy; the guitars on Right Next Door To Hell and Don't Cry sound good, but nowhere near the impact of AFD. The first listen of Welcome To The Jungle changed my life when I was 11 and guitar wise, that was 50% Izzy!

Yeah i don't know, sounded pretty good when he was just playing a few chords there on his own but not spectacular by any means. It's always gonna a fall short in comparison i suppose, the thing about the AFD tone to me was how it combined modern gainy crunch with a warm vintage sound perfectly.
It was a great tone, in combination with Izzy's guitar, it was the ultimate dual guitar sound. I prefer Slash's UYI guitar tone (I know that is not a popular opinion), but the mix on the guitar tracks is fucked on so many UYI tracks, it never comes close you the twin power on AFD.

The AFD 100 doesn't sound great IMO. I know it was built for him etc, but it doesn't nail his album tones at all.

Thanks @AxlsFavoriteRose, a guy I work with said my voice reminded him of Phil Anselmo from Pantera the other day! It is interesting how different ears perceive the same sound. I am very close to finishing a mix on a re-recorded version of a track on here called High Hopes, should be pretty cool when it is finished.

Check the 12th fret harmonic against the fretted note for differences, you may have already done this, but here is an article that goes through it:

You mention adjusting the saddles, so I don't know if you have checked this as well. Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

Yeah, it's not like a lost Guns track or anything, but it has a good groove.
