Axl would have continued NuGN'R afterwards

No way that Axl was ever planning to go from playing stadiums (50K people) with Slash, to playing theaters (10K people) and Las Vegas residencies (4,500 people). He would have had to find three new band members and no musician worth a damn would join NuGuns in 2016. There's no way NuGuns would have ever continued after Coachella and the warm up shows.

People complain that it's not really new because the demos of them have been around for years. To that I say, it's not the band's fault that people chose to hear the leaked demos and form an opinion of the demos versus the official final versions. Had they not been leaked, the band could have held on to them and prepped them for a release on a full length album, but I'm sure they got tired of people having access to the demos.

Counterpoint: They had at least 18 years to release the songs. That's more than enough time to release music. Can't blame the fans for listening when we have been starving for a long time.

Does anyone else still thinks The General might be a (maybe heavily) reworked version of "Strate of Grace"? I do.

It's possible but the timeline is extremely tight. We know The General was started from a sample by Brain. Brain joined GN'R in March 2000. State of Grace is dated March 27th, 2000 making it extremely likely that State of Grace pre-dates Brain joining GN'R and is therefore not The General. Based on all the dates on the CDs, it appears that Brain didn't really start working in the studio until Fall 2000.

I imagine there were contracts in place to where all the material they used in regards to GNR could still be used by GNR even after they left

I recall a Tommy Stinson interview where he stated that after he left the band he tried to get permission to record and release some of the demos he wrote for GN'R that were never used and his request was denied. He was told that some of his demos could be used in the future.

I also recall Axl's post on this forum in 2008 where he listed an Izzy song from 1995 among the songs that were in consideration for Chinese Democracy.

These two recollections suggest that Axl hoards all material written by former members for potential future use, no matter how old the songs might be or how long ago the band member left.

I'd say it'd be a top 5 song on CD. It would have been the obvious single with Better. No idea why they went CD and Street of dreams as singles. Better and Atlas were the two.

At the very least they could have dropped Scraped and replaced it with Atlas. That would have improved the album. I think others on here have said before that if they trimmed out the 1:00 intro on Chinese Democracy and the 35 second intro on Riad then they could have fit Atlas within the CD's time limits as they were attempting to do.

Yea...maybe they've continued that project as along the way, Axl decided he wanted that "part 2" out In some form.....other than what it probably is (usual tardiness) it would explain Slash's comments on Trunk and why it's taken longer...he did say in 2022 that they planned to keep rleeakng singles until there's a full LP worth....so if we get another one this year (or two) I suppose General and Atlas is where the smart money is ...then we're half way to an album....maybe instead of longest gaps between LP's....Axl's gonna go for longest dole out of an LP over years instead! 🤣

I am convinced that releasing an albums worth of singles instead of an actual album is a technique to avoid the expectations and scrutiny that comes with a full album release. Dr. Dre used this same technique when he released 6 singles at the same time last year instead of bundling them together as an EP or album. He was able to release new music without having to face the expectations that come with the idea of a "new Dr. Dre project". Seems Axl is following a similar idea but he is leaving long gaps between the release of the singles.

While I agree, poor comparisons on the evidence we have...I'd opined with, that was the 2000 version of that song and probably very early...we have many comments it was being worked on up until at least just before CD release and only just missed the cut....surely what would of made CD wouldn't of been what we've heard...I think it could of (as we've kinda heard with Perhaps in a lesser way) morphed quite a bit...that original sounds like a midi demo. I think we get too wrapped up in those early demos and presuming that's the end result....I know it's GNR but when you get a super deluxe boxset of an album and you hear those early takes of certain songs, it can be a revelation how much they evolved to the final cut ....let's keep that in mind and perspective

I agree. I made sure to say that the demo version of Atlas didn't live up to the hype. The final version could be better or worse. In my opinion, most of the Chinese songs were better as demos and the final versions are way overproduced and bloated. So I'm not holding my breath for a finished version of Atlas.

They said it was a glam rock version of November Rain which it sounds nothing like at all

Yeah. Comparing it to November Rain was a bad choice and when combined with 18 years of positive comments from band members and collaborators, it set the expectations way too high. There was a feeling that Atlas was going to be better than the songs on Chinese because it was being saved for the sequel. But I would say the demo of  Atlas is of equal or slightly lesser quality than most of the songs that made it on Chinese Democracy.

You can't keep touring forever by just adding some deepcuts.

They absolutely can. Plenty of older bands are always on tour and only play the hits with no new music. They just have to put enough time between their visits to each market. If they play a city, don't come back for 3-4 years so the demand can grow again. At some points they may have to downsize venues or add a co-headliner if demand is really low but then after a while demand will pick back up again. Throw in some festivals here and there. Maybe even another residency in Vegas. They can ride it out for another 10+ years until Axl is ready to retire.

  10. Adler once claimed in an interview back in 2016/2017 that he learned to play the entire GN'R catalog in preparation for NITL. Personally, I never believed that claim. The idea of Adler learning to play My World or Scraped or Oh My God is laughable in my mind. He later contradicted that claim in a different interview by saying he would only be willing to play songs from Appetite + GN'R Lies + Civil War and some of the UYI songs.  Regardless of who you pick, the return of Adler or Izzy would limit the setlists, as others have pointed out. I don't have a problem with Frank and I like Fortus quite a bit so I'm fine with the lineup as-is.
