Damn, I completely forgot about that. Well, it's been a while (I don't remember the keys at all). Anyway, Dizzy's position in the band is cemented, and rightfully so.

And let's be honest. If any of us could play keys and got offered the opportunity Dizzy was who in their right mind wouldn't take it? To mock him for not doing anything to screw it up for 34 years is stupid. And to be the only classic member for a long time and surviving the craziness that is having Axl for a boss he must have the patience of a saint.

I don’t have a problem with Dizzy, and I wouldn’t exactly call him a yes man either, tbh. When the old bickering couple finally broke up, it’s not like he had a huge dilemma as to which side to choose. Slash’s subsequent music, whether Snakepit or later VR, didn’t need keyboards, while Axl, on the other hand, always did – hell, he had not one but two keyboardists in the band at the same time! And so Dizzy stayed, minding his own business, playing the awesome Estranged solo every night (I mean, since 2011).
And the fact he never told us anything of real value in the interviews? Well, no shit, as he obviously wasn’t allowed to (not that this has drastically changed since 2016 regarding even Slash or Duff).
If you want to look for yes men, remember a certain guy reacting like a wounded rabid dog every time someone dared to criticize anything regarding Axl online; or a woman who gets hugged by Axl on the side of the stage mid-song and who holds an umbrella for him when he’s picking up his mail, for god’s sake (where’s the yellow raincoat when you need one, huh?). Yeah, if I wanted to look for yes men, that’s where I’d turn my attention to.
Dizzy is ok. Neved done any harm that we're aware of. Playing his part. Why not.

I agree with all that you wrote with just one correction. Both Snakepit albums have keyboards. Dizzy on the first. Teddy on the second.

I never liked him in GnR.
he’s obviously very lucky to have been friends with Axl so he joined and hasn’t rocked the boat in 34 years.

    the ultimate yes man.

Dizzy was definitely lucky. But that's not to say he isn't very talented and deserving of his place in the band.

I think he's very loyal to Axl cos Axl made him a band member when he was being evicted and was about to have nowhere to live. I don't think it's about being a yes man and not rocking the boat. Of course Dizzy knows he's got a gig many can only dream of. Why fix what ain't broke.

Yeah I agree. Dizzy is good enough for it to be just him. I will say tho that I love the extended version of Move To The City.

I think with Chris and now Melissa it's not so much about having another keys player but someone to play the right samples and layers at the right times. I've heard that Melissa thickens the sound live so it sounds like there's three guitars instead of two or something.

Probably because he’s completely irrelevant. I’ve often wondered why he bothers to stay on stage shaking a little percussion instrument that no one can hear during half the songs.

Well he's obviously not irrelevant cos he's lasted 34 years straight and counting. He stays on stage the full show switching between keys and percussion cos he's a band member, not a backup musician. And you can often hear Dizzy on percussion. Take Rocket Queen on Tokyo 92 where he switches between keys and percussion. He's actually a pretty decent percussionist as well as keys player.

He's all over the Chinese Democracy album and the recently released songs. Obviously Axl thinks he's worth keeping around. And a lot of members have come and gone.

  6. Ok apologies if this has been addressed in another thread. So I've finally gotten a reasonably priced UYI super deluxe edition (7 CD and Blu Ray version). Obviously the first disc I play is the Blu Ray. And whilst it's a great performance from Izzy era Illusion tour one thing sucks. Did whoever the camera people were forget about Dizzy? You can see his piano on the left hand side of the stage. If you squint you can see him in the shadows. I think one of the only times you see him when Axl introduces him during Estranged.

I know he's not an original member and most fans probably watch for Axl, Slash n Duff. But Matt wasn't an original member and we see plenty of him. I don't know about everyone else. But if I buy something which contains a Blu Ray concert of a favourite artist/band I expect to see the whole fucking band.

Happy birthday! What an amazing gift. Some of us (including me) bitched about it because we are content starved and wanted demoes too, but when you dive into it, it is truly a must- have set. Those two concerts are phenomenal; the best live albums from GNR you can get. The Ritz Blu- Ray might be the best live video of the band in existence. I think this release is the best thing the band has put out since the reunion.

I have the vinyl box and in terms of the insert, I agree. I just keep it on top of my Locked N' Loaded box in a stack of junk. I need to organize

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Fucking JB NZ has now taken 40 bucks off the price and it's only 159:99. Oh fuck it I've got it now. And for seven CDs, a Blu Ray, huge book and everything else I guess it's still a pretty good buy.

  8. Hi guys.

So yesterday was my birthday and after hinting to my wife that the super deluxe version of Illusion (the 7 CD and Blu Ray version) had come down in price to 199 dollars from the NZ JB hi-fi, bless her heart she got me it. Awesome as it looks and as much as I'm looking forward to enjoying it one thing about the packaging fucks me off. The tracklisting of the seven CDs and the Blu Ray is on a cardboard backing which isn't attached to the box. Similar to how with the Appetite super deluxe edition with the CDs and Blu Ray the tracklisting is on a piece of paper very loosely attached to it's box. It's a fucking pain trying to store both so they won't get ripped.

What'd everyone else do with them? I'm thinking the easiest thing might be to get them laminated. Thoughts?

  9. 6. Just Ken - Really haven't listened to it much. Just a bit of harmless fun but not particularly engaging.

    5. Killing Floor - I really enjoyed this and it bodes well for Slash's blues covers album.

    4. The General - This song had been built up over the years as being epic. I guess as an experimental album track it'd be ok. Bad choice for a single to try and win over or win back fans.

    3. Absurd - Odd choice for a comeback single but it's short rocking tune. It's got attitude to burn.

    2. Perhaps - Love Dizzy's piano riff. It's got a great chorus. It's up there with November Rain and Street Of Dreams for me.

    1. Hard Skool - Great Duff bassline. It sounds the most like classic GN'R.

If Monsters had been a single that would take the number two spot. Really like that song.

    I do - a 3 year old daughter :(

Oh shit. Sorry I just assumed (wrongly) cos you hadn't mentioned kids. My parents split when my brother and I were young so I can relate. How is she coping and processing it all.

Kids can be resilient. So long as she knows you and your ex are both there for her.

Getting divorced through a long and painful drawn out distancing of our relationship, which built up to a really poorly handled "I don't love you" from my wife.

It happened 2 months ago today. I feel like yesterday was the first day that I snapped out of my funk. I thought I had before, but it wasn't real. Today feels better.

I've just written up our Separation Agreement, to be delivered at the appropriate time.

Shit. Sorry to hear that you're going thru this. I suppose at least you don't have kids that are stuck in the middle.

My bad my man, I just assumed that the whole throwing a ball around and using your hands while doing so was an American thing. More power to the kiwis!

All good mate. We live in Nelson. We're going to Wellington to see the Harlem Globetrotters when they visit. Should be good.

Don't feed the troll eh I mean Karen...oh Karice was the word I was looking for!

How is your family doing Gunner Gilby? :)

Really good thanks. My youngest son is basketball mad. He's in his second year of intermediate. He's played basketball for the school team last year and this year. He found out last week he made the A squad.

Thanks for asking and for the kind words Jan, I'm not sure, at the moment we are leaning towards a "yeah I really want to know the sex before birth because of practical reasons"  versus "we'll see it'll  be loved anyway".  Do you have children Jan? I'm assuming you do since you asked an oddly specific question :P

Congratulations on your new incoming Son or Daughter, 😀, but a huge part of your post comes off as sexist...😐

It didn't come off as remotely sexist. More tongue in cheek humour. I'm sure he loves his wife/partner and will love his kid whatever the gender.

When my wife was pregnant with our second child she hoped for a daughter. She joked that with me, one son and a male cat that she was outnumbered. Well our second and last child was a boy. You love your kids whatever they come out as. Nothing wrong with a little humour.

Pretty crap. I wish I could just escape the current situation and fast forward months or years.

    What's your current situation?

I'm sorry, did you not listen to that clip of him playing Thunderstruck? The beat dropped out entirely at points. He was already a shadow of what he was in 1991 when he rejoined in 2015. After this stroke, he's just in a sad state to behold.

I've seen the live version of Thunderstruck you're referring too. And yeah he fluffed a few of the drum parts but like a pro recovered and carried on. Even the best musicians have off nights and performances. There's other videos of Slade drumming post stroke where his drumming's fine.

As for your comment about him being a shadow of himself or at least his drumming when he rejoined in 2015. Angus is a businessman as much as he's a musician. If he thought Slade didn't still have the chops he wouldn't have gotten him back. Or does Angus have bad hearing too?

Phil Rudd's criminal record is going to be a permanent problem travelling to certain countries. I think most would rather Slade than a substitute.

Have to ask why? Gilby was in the band just over 18 months as a live touring fill in for izzy who they were still trying to get back. Didn't play on any original GnR material and hasn't done anything great as a solo star or celebrity to justify any extra interest. Fortus is an elite level guitar player, been in the band 22 years, played on chinese democracy and some of the newer stuff, and been touring with slash now for 8 years. Ok he's not irreplaceable i grant you, but he's very much the glue of this new band. Plus i really liked his playing in the dead daises, so he's got the ability to be part of good new material if Axl ever let him, gilby was sacked coz he didnt have the ability to write gnr calibre guitar rifs.

Gilby was in GN'R for about three years from late 91 - late 94. He's produced and played with LA Guns, Nancy Sinatra and The Bronx. Played with Heart, MC5 and others. Been in a supergroup with Tommy Lee and Jason Newstead. Gilby's solo albums don't aim to reinvent the wheel but they're fun and well crafted. Maybe his solo stuff doesn't sell a ton to the mainstream but neither does Izzy's. Doesn't mean they're not good.

As for the the old chestnut of Gilby not being good enough to write with GN'R. Since letting Gilby go GN'R released one album.

A drummer who's not in the best physical shape and a guitar player who's not done a full live show in years – who's to say instrumentals would even sound good?

Well that's an easy fix. I'm sure Matt and Gilby would happily fill those spots if asked too. Keep Dizzy. With those three plus Axl, Slash and Duff you've got the next best classic line up 👍.
