chicagocoma13
A lot those shoegazing bands were influenced by My Bloody Valentine who had a brilliant album in 91 called Loveless. I have never heard walls of guitars to the extreme like this album has. Takes about 20 listens to even realize how brilliant it is. There is so mush going on in the songs. This was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the early 90's but sadly to this day there is no follow up album. (sound familiar ?) Another great shoegazer band was Lush. Kevin Shields who was the mastermind of My Bloody Valentine now records amd tours with Primal Scream last I heard. Many people are still wishing for a follow up to Loveless---
Pico
Yeah yeah, Loveless... MBV's Isn't Anything is a criminally underrated album. And even though they were around before the genre grew big, check out the godfathers of shoegaze: the Jesus And Mary Chain. Get their debut album Psychocandy right away. It will kick your ass.

I think a lot of the roots of shoegaze go back to The Velvet Underground, actually. Songs like Heroin had sort of a shoegaze vibe to 'em, and Jesus and Mary Chain were definitely inspired by the VU.
