kevin
There's been a lot of controversy on here lately regarding rap music, it's creativity, it's merits... Well this is where we debate it. Stacks on deck, ER, I expect you guys in here.
stacks on deck
rap is the most creative genre out there.

Estranged Reality
There is plenty of bad rap/hip-hop music. But there's also plenty of brilliant and creative hip-hop out there. Saying it isn't creative based on the mainstream pap is like a rap fan coming up to you and saying, "Hey, rock music is all boring and outdated. Why? Because Hinder and Buckcherry SUCK!"Point is, you can't make blanket statements based on mediocre, marginally talented popular artists. They aren't representative of the genre's best offerings. This is one of the best songs of 2008:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbVn3nQtIRoThat dude, Raphael Saadiq, is combining the sounds of rap and hip-hop with Motown and doo-wop. It's one of the most creative albums I've heard -- ever -- and proof alone that rap is a legitimate art form, IMO. Personally I think rap, or at least hip-hop, in today's musical climate, is one of the most daring and creative art forms alive... you might have to venture underground for the really good stuff, but it's there. I work at a music store and there's this regular we have who's always into classic rock bands, blues and jazz. He came in last week asking for all these rap artists from the '80s and '90s, and when I asked him why, this guy -- who's in his late 50s -- said to me, "It seems like there's a lot more interesting stuff going on there right now." You don't have to agree with him, but I think understating the creative vibrancy that is alive in the genre right now is a huge mistake. Just my two cents. estranged 16
rap music is awesome. before i ever even gave rock a chance, i listened to all rap basically. many people here blow it off and don't give it the time of day for stupid reasons- they think soulja boy and people like him represent rap which is wrong. they'd be surprised at what they heard if they give it a chance

Beyond that though I even like the lyrics. I think they're really good, which is something I can't say I'd normally think about Lil Wayne. That guy's actually pretty awesome. The album's just about an average day in the life of a working class Brit. No bling, ho's or goldie looking chains. Very down-to-earth. Like I said before, most of the good stuff - as with any genre, including rock - thrives off the radar. Not all, but most. Get that album if you really want something fun and catchy but with some depth to it.Stacks probably has a better grasp on good rap nowadays, but there are mandatory oldies like NWA, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, Dre, Ice Cube, the list goes on.BTW, I love this song:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr0XEcUmD4sGnarls Barkley - St. ElsewhereWhile on the subject of Gnarls:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8R42ZU10KoOne of the most moving performances I've heard... the original song is great as well but they really knocked it out of the ballpark here.Might like this if you're into Jay-Z and enjoy rock:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbXLp2z6xL4

stacks on deck
i've always held the opinion that illmatic is one of the rap albums that everyone should enjoy. like, even if you don't like rap, you'll like that album.same thing goes for kind of blue with jazz.
