MYGNR Top 100 Albums of All Time

Recommended Posts

So in 2006 I put up a thread to find out what album's MyGnR think belong in the all time top 100. The thread spanned 23 pages and had 334 replies. The rules were:

* Every member gets to choose 5 albums that they think deserve to be on the Top 100 Albums of All Time list.

* You can choose different albums from the same band, but you can't pick the same album from the same band twice or more.

* The order of the list makes no difference. I.e if you have Zeppelin I as number one, it doesnt affect its position on the final list.

* If the same user makes two or more posts, the other posts will be disqualified. Only the first post counts.

* Compilations, i.e greatest hits albums or live albums do NOT count!

* Chinese Democracy doesn't count. If its released before July20th, it does.

* Once you've chosen your albums, you can't change them.

* The competition ends July 20th when I will count all the votes and make the list.

* Discussion is allowed, but please try not to go too off-topic. Anything Goes and UYI are for that.

It's not a bad list at all, tho this being a GN'R forum it is a bit biased.

Question is, are you up for another one? For this list I did all the counting by myself, and it wasn't an easy job exactly, with so many replies. I'd be up for the job, but only if I get a little help. If anyone is interested, PM me!

buckley, bowie, and prince are the only decent artists on that list.

You must now explain why Dylan isn't a decent artist.

awful singer, repetitive and boring songwriter, and insanely overrated lyricist. one or two good albums and he's considered a legend. fuck that.

Blood On the Tracks > your life.

But that is a pretty terrible list, and I can't believe Pantera is on there.

Even though I hate Pantera, and think Dimebag is no more than overrated, you have to be kidding not to see why Pantera is on here. Everyone that likes Extreme Metal (not many here probably) love Pantera, as do most "metal heads" in general. I'm just surprised it wasn't Cowboys From Hell that made it on there. Meh, I guess I'm a bit surprised that a Guns N' Roses forum voted them on, as well.

highway 61 is decent, can't lie. but everything else is whack.

we should get a bunch of the real niggas together--me, you, black monk time, et al--and make our own list.

Blasphemy!

Maybe a top 50; I can't be bothered to make a longer list than that. I'd also invite Lithium for classic rock and dirtylenny for the punk-rock balance, otherwise it'll look like Pitchfork.

Let me rephrase that: I'm not surprised that Pantera was on there, but I wouldn't pick them.

I'm less into heavy metal than some other users here. Country and heavy metal are two genres I never particularly enjoyed as much.

Hey man, don't laugh at Lil' Wayne. He's a Packer fan. That's enough credibility to respect him.

You seriously need to do some more listening before you let opinions like this out, even though I know its just that you like being the outsider and all, I'm the same sometimes. Bob Dylan changed the entire paradigm of lyrics in music and the role of the singer, there's just no criticizing his role in the development of popular music. All of the "decent" artists you named adored him and their music could not have had the same platform were it not for Dylan's innovations. That doesn't mean you have to like him either, but claiming that he doesn't deserve to be considered a legend doesn't hold up at all.

Without Bob, the last 45 years of music doesn't happen.

Oh, and I for one love his voice. Extremely powerful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlTtLAEZ3AY

:rofl-lol:

The best thing Dylan did was contribute to the Big Lebowski soundtrack.

The fact of the matter is, all lyrics that rely on their evocations and poetic qualities above their literal surface meanings stem from Dylan. There's probably almost nothing you listen to that doesn't have a calculable influence from Dylan in it. Also, any singer you may like who isn't "good" or proficient in the conventional way would not have had an audience before Dylan. Once again, I'm not saying you have to like him, but to deny his contributions is erroneous.
