Would AFD have been possible if the most of the guys in the band hadn't been into drinking and drugs?

Weed is not a drug

Anything that intoxicates is a drug.

I don't feel intoxicated when I smoke weed...not like drinking.

I've never heard of people smoking weed and getting into fights or car accidents.

You don't know what intoxicated means?

No one claimed smoking weed leads to fights or car accidents.

The classic line up were an amazing musicians with or without drugs. Drugs destroyed the band in general.

Each song of GNR has been documented how it was started i.e. PC, SCOM, etc.
Mr. Brownstone was like an experience and was just written how it was like.

If drugs bring one band or individual to a very successful career then there would have been millions of successful bands/individuals by now.

Sex, Drugs and Alcohol are just vices for an entertainment that anyone can experience anytime.

LOL. That's a funny statement considering that all of them except for Steven were sober when they exited. And drugs didn't have anything to do with the main reason they left(Axl and his ego and his dictating).

Izzy and Slash came up with a lot of songs by jamming. Like it or not but a lot of their bond revolved around drugs according to them.

Drugs is what bonded GNR to become what they were. The lack of seemed to have the worst effect on them.

People on drugs usually do have a million excuses, blame too place elsewhere on why its everyone else's fault. And all sober when they left gnr, yeah right, likely story.

I've never heard of people smoking weed and getting into fights or car accidents.

Then you have never actually smoked weed. I challenge you to go to Amsterdam, smoke a SINGLE joint of the weed called 'the glory' and then try driving a car without having an accident. In fact, I would be amazed if you even manage to open the car door. Intoxicated is a tame word compared to what genuine cannabis can do to you....

Back on track, drugs without a doubt influences everything that anybody does whilst under the influence. But this is the difference, were the ideas born when they were fucked up, or when they were clean? Because an idea or riff is not a song. You then build on that riff or idea, and something might happen. But 90% of the time, it ends up being nothing.

So its hard to know for sure. Yes, we know Brownstone was written about an experience WITH drugs, but were they ON drugs when it was just a riff or chord progression? Who knows, and to be honest who cares. AFD was fucking beautiful.

Appetite simply would not exist. It is funny watching all of the Axl nutswingers get all puritanical and pious about drugs and drink in order to throw verbal missiles at Slash and Adler.

Great post.

You're a moron.

Your opinion on my intelligence level has nothing to do with the actual topic. If all you can do is insult people and not contribute to a topic.....maybe you shouldn't be a member of the forum. Please save your personal attacks for the PM system. Or better yet, leave the insults aside and just stick to the actual topic.

I can't really return the favor and give you my opinion of your intelligence level, as I don't recognize your name or ever remember a post that you wrote that was interesting enough to make me take notice of who the author was. Sorry about that.

Izzy and Slash came up with a lot of songs by jamming. Like it or not but a lot of their bond revolved around drugs according to them.

Drugs is what bonded GNR to become what they were. The lack of seemed to have the worst effect on them.

While Slash and Izzy were friends, they didn't hang out much and they were basically opposites: Izzy was sober and liked to ride motorcycles, Slash was constantly drunk (or on drugs) and liked partying hard. Izzy and Slash came up a lot of songs by jamming because it's their goal and objective.

When Izzy left, it was obvious that Axl was stuck in a band with only two original members remaining. He had lost Izzy Stradlin, who wrote a great part of Appetite For Destruction. Left was Slash and Duff, who were partying hard, doing drugs and drinking a lot - to the degree that Duff had to quit drinking to stay alive.

During that period of time Axl had reasons for doing what he did with the contract. The band had indeed fired him, and he thus had reasons to be worried about what Slash and Duff would do when they were under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Any conflict could lead to Axl being fired by the other two, and Axl may have suspected that they could carry on with another singer. Eager to avoid this, he demanded the rights to the name while UYI tour.

After the tour, however, Duff cleaned up, and Slash got better again. At this point, Axl could've possibly kept the band intact if he had handed the rights back to Slash and Duff. It does appear, however, that Axl was worried about the direction of the band. Slash wanted Gilby to help writing the next album the band would make, and Axl disagreed with this, because he felt Gilby had little to offer the band. After all Matt and Gilby Clarke helped Slash write his band's album It's Five O' Clock Somewhere. The album featured songs Axl rejected for Guns n' Roses.

While the history of Guns n' Roses is still a little messy and unclear, I find it fair to say that both Slash and Axl made Slash leave Guns n' Roses. Axl made Slash's life in the band difficult, while Slash didn't keep up with the standards Axl wanted to band to keep. This led to Slash leaving the band, and Axl continuing alone.

And generally, drugs and alcohol destroyed the band considering the case of Adler.

WTF :rofl-lol:

Izzy and Slash were dope buddies for a while. Drugs pretty much made GNR and the lack of them(with the exception of Adler) made it impossible for the others to cope with Axl's shit.

And LOL @ using Adler's drug situation as "destruction of the band" while denying that drugs played a large role in holding the band together and being a catalyst for their art.

There was a Slash's interview asking if he writes BEST when he's high, he said NO but he claimed that it was cool to write on one of the songs 'Coma'. He claimed that Izzy and him were on high writing 'Dust N' Bones.

Duff and Slash are now sober and they even regret taking drugs.

What does that have to do with anything? Slash recalls many episodes of usage and writing with Izzy directly related to that bonding over drugs in his book. If you think that Dust N Bones was the only time they were high together, I assume you haven't dug too deep into GNR history.

According to him, the way the songs came about is they would get fucked up and just jam and Axl would sit and listen and think of lyrics and/or melodies. This was before Axl started separating from the group.

What destroyed the band was a combo of Axl's antics and their inability to cope with it. When they were strung out, they had a way to cope. Once the usage stopped and they tried to deal with it sober, they knew they could either leave or kill themselves further. Politically correct or not, drugs was the glue that helped hold them together.

That's certainly different than his other story that he wanted the rights to the name in case they were to die.

Also, according to Axl, he WILLINGLY left for a short period. He wasn't fired.

The actual story about them firing him was that they considered firing him early on because of his bullshit.

Everything that I've ever read or heard about that time period said that Izzy was a huge heroin addict and dealer. You are saying he wasn't?

He was but he had become sober.

http://www.helium.com/items/2041402-why-izzy-stradlin-left-guns-n-roses

He had become sober and didn’t really fit into the band any more.

In 1989, Izzy cleaned up. From this point and onwards, he felt somehow out of the band because Slash and Duff were doing drugs heavily. Axl, meanwhile, had drifted off and had less and less to do with the band. In this situation, Izzy felt the band had moved from being a bunch of friends and towards being something that did not make any sense anymore.

Again, what I was saying was that with or without drugs the classic line up were amazing musicians. They can do wonders without drugs. And generally drugs made them uneasy to each other.

There were a lot of testimonies on line from the managers, band-members, marcCarter and the media although each side has their own agenda where you can read the context between the lines.

Tears Before Bedtime?

http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/articles/showarticle.php?articleid=8

Axl fired the band. The band fired Axl. Then they made up - and fired the drummer instead. Slash checked into rehab - then he checked out again. They got arrested, banned, married - and drunk. Oh, and they finally made a second album. What the hell's been going on with Guns N' Roses? "It's pathetic," Slash tells Sylvie Simmons. "The less we do the bigger the band gets."

Coke?

"Well that's obnoxious, and you can't get it up! And you get into these really ridiculously bitter fights. And then, when you do a lot of coke, you tend to drink a lot - and I know that one real well too!".

Heroin?

"I just liked it. I liked the way it felt. And fuck, I didn't know if I did it four or five days in a row I'd get fucking hooked on it! And that's a different subject altogether. That drug takes you over mentally and physically, so much that to come back is hard. I was never a big coke addict, ever. I had not so much a drinking problem as to just want to drink and get rowdy. I used to love to get just fucking drunk! I used it to escape a bad day. Sometimes, I'd much rather just go home, sit down with a glass or something and kick back and go to sleep. I really don't feel that I have the intense addiction that people believe.

"I was forced into rehab once when I was going through a very big needle phase. Three days. And I saw what that was all about, and looked in the Yellow Pages and got a car and got myself out of there. I said, I'm not this fucked up! I mean, I know when I'm doing something."

Do you write best when you're high?

"No, but I wrote some really cool shit when I was high. There's a song called Coma, a long song, really heavy, and I wrote that loaded. And it's not something that I can really see myself writing right now. And then me and Izzy wrote a song called Dust And Bones in a similar kind of state. But whatever you're going through, your material is supposed to be some sort of mirror of your experience. There's so many bands now who write stuff that doesn't relate to anything."
