Vai is extremely good, yes.

I don't know if he's the best though. There's something about his playing that somehow strikes me as a little.... off somehow.

I don't have any of his solo albums though... all i have is his work with Diamond Dave and some stuff in G3.

pick up his anthology double CD, there will be no doubt in your mind...

nobody tops that guy in terms of composition, imagination, or execution...

I would say Paul Gilbert but as he's not on there I'll say Hendrix.

I find Hendrix very over rated. The fact that his live sets were so erratic IMO makes him not so great because a good guitarist should always be able to perform at their best.

I'd say Vai but i'll vote Slash because he brings me more enjoyment.

I consider Slash and Eddie Van Halen as being American, they both moved to America when very young and only really started playing when they arrived in America. Slash gets my vote, i could listen to the November Rain Solo all day long.

Some petty is good, it's just not the same genre as Pery. Joe Perry plays a much heavier rock guitar, while Petty is more of a throwback lighter rock and is more musical.

Im gonna say Hendrix. He may not be the best, but he had the biggest influence on how the guitar is played today. He was the first of his kind. Without him, I don't know where the guitar would be.
