paulmartin
Is there much difference in sound between an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop. I just thought the goldtop looks cool but I looked at the Epiphone.com website and it says it has alnico p90's but the Standard just has two humbuckers. Anyone know the difference in sound and which is better. I wanna play blues rock like Slash (obviously) and Jimmy Page, etc.
The Volitan
a p-90 is a thinner (more treble) sounding pickup in comparison to a regular humbucker. A p-90 is a single coil pickup, like a strat or tele has. It just has a little more kick to it. If you're gonna spend $600 on an Epi, you might as well save an extra $50-$100 and get a Gibson Les Paul special. Up to you though.
AxlisOld
Who spends 600 on an epi? I guess if you pay list, but in that case you'll be paying 999 for Gibby. Street on an epiphone (in America anyway) is about 479-99. Street on the special (not the faded crap) is 699. Plus those specials come with p-100's only the faded specials come with p-90's

zrose27
dont buy aan epi, or lp special....they both suck ass. all the les pauls by epi dont sound llike the official.. even if you get the burstbucker pros in them. the quality on the wood sucks and the way its put together is also bad. i would just save up for a lp classix or standard. dont buy any thingelse.. you get what u pay for. but if you want to sound like slash get the alnicho 2 pros. there 100 bucks a piece and there the same he uses. The Volitan
i think epi r better than any other guitars out therethe best guitar in the world has to be the epiphone reviraWithout a doubt, epi make some of the best hollowboies in the world. Epi is great when they're making they're own guitars (Sheratons, Casino's, etc) but fall embarrassingly short when it comes to making Gibson copies. To topic starter: If you have $600, get a Gibson LP Special, or save up an extra $400 or so, and get a studio.

The Volitan
www.warmoth.comWarmoth, better guitars than anything Gibson have ever made.1. That's false because they just make parts, not guitars.2. Are you saying a new warmoth is better than a 'late 50's LP?

With the right pickups, yes
The Volitan
Warmoth's aren't instrument makers. You can order any kind of guitar with the best tonewood in the world. The most expensive wood they have for an LP is walnut. You can go to any manufacturer and get a walnut guitar made, and they'll assemble it for you. Warmoth doesn't make guitars, just parts, so they don't really count. Also, NO pickup in the world can recreate a the sound of a '57-'60 LP. The reason those guitars sound good is because the wood is old and has aged. Name a pickup that can recreate the sound of a REAL P.A.F, I'd gladly like to see them./

Personally, i'm never going to buy a Fender, Gibson or ESP etc ever again, i can build a guitar thats many times better for a 1/3 of the price. The fact is, Warmoth sell parts that are cheaper and of higher quality than anything Gibson sell. You can get a local luither to assemble it for a minor cost if you arnt capible of doing it yourself. Are you talking about a 57'-60' LP played today? or one played back when it was new? It's not hard to get someone to wind you a pickup to the exact spec of a PAF.
