And IIRC, in the Making F**king Videos for Don't Cry, he said he was in love with the chick who's tattoed on his arm. I think a lot of this stems from the fact that his private life has been kept really private since the early 90s. He could have been in a serious long-term relationship (or a couple of them) over that time. But since SS was his last high profile thing, it gets focused on a lot. And it was alleged he was obsessed with her in that RS piece of '01, but that article seemed intent on casting him in the most unflattering light possible, so that may have been overblown.
