Anyone else enjoy The General more than Monsters?

I think I've always enjoyed it more. I don't think that either song is particularly great. I prefer the chorus of The General and the overall vibe, but I think the verses of Monsters are slightly better than The General. To be honest, it's been a while since I listened to either, but on balance, I remember enjoying The General more.

I’ve seen Eminem at Metlife and Yankee Stadium and I’m not very fond of him lol. It was still a very fun experience and don’t regret it at all.

Don’t discount the magic of live music!

Plus don’t forget some people go just for clout!

Agree 100%. I've never gone out of my way to go to someone's gig who I didn't want to see, but I did stumble on Crowded House at a festival one year. I wasn't particularly interested until I saw them live.

Yeah it sounds like, for a long time, EVH was fine with VH3 being his last album. He had to be convinced to do ADKoT.

Similarly, Kiss considered Psycho Circus to be their swan song for a long time. They only made Sonic Boom in an attempt to try to end on a higher note, and then somehow made an album that was even worse, so they had to go make Monster too (thankfully that one was good).

And then there’s Billy Joel, who’s been a self-proclaimed nostalgia act since 1993.

The point is that a lot of these people “run out of gas” once they hit a certain age. Axl is no different.

I think that, at least insofar as it pertains to Billy Joel, he was at least honest and continues to be transparent about his status. He doesn't have anything else that he wants to say and is quite happy playing at MSG and doing his thing (I saw him a couple of weeks ago in Hyde Park. It was one of the best gigs I've been to). The issue with GNR is that members (and historically, Axl) have dangled the possibility of new music, but for whatever reason, it very rarely materialises.

I personally have no issue with GNR being a nostalgia or legacy act; I won't be seeing them again in any event so it's all the same to me. I also don't particularly care whether they release new music or not but I do empathise with the people who do care or for who, new music is a condition of them seeing GNR live again.

Same also saw them on the Sunday, amazing show. AM didn't just make AM2 and I repect that.

From the audience singing last night they clearly had a good time, just armchair reviewers weighing in.

However if this is the reaction that the beloved Arctic Monkeys are getting, will be interesting to see how GNR who have much less good will with the press will be assessed.

I was listening to the Paul McCartney audio from last glasto and the mix was very forgiving to his voice, hopefully the same will apply for GNR.

Agreed 100%. I know that people watching at home are complaining but it didn't look like the crowd themselves hates being there, especially for the "big hits". I do think that perhaps approaching Glasto (or any festival for that matter) requires a different approach to playing your own shows. That being said, the fact that they started their Glasto headlining performance with Sculptures of Anything Goes was shithousery at its finest.

Agreed too on the mixing point. I saw Macca a few years ago (2009 - wow; time flies) and his vocals were ropey then so whoever is on the mixing desk is performing miracles. Let's hope for something similar tonight (although I'm out at Weyes Blood so will need to catch up anyway).

For the Brits, and especially Glasto attendees, AM are absolutely much bigger and well known, no doubt about it

I think aside from audience recognition, their levels of influence are quite telling.

GNR were perhaps unfortunate to have existed as rock was dying and so their level on influence on popular music wasn't felt too much beyond their original lifespan.

Compare that to the Arctic Monkeys who basically influenced all "Indie" music that came after them. The only band in the "rock" genre I can think of that has been more influential in recent times would be Tame Impala who basically shaped a lot of pop and rock music that is currently popular.

Just my opinion and again coming from a Brit so what do I know?

  6. I'm in the minority apparently, but I loved every moment of the set. I saw them live last Sunday at Emirates Stadium (had Miles Kane come out for 505 which was a treat).

Alex Turner is certainly an acquired taste, especially of late, but I sit firmly in the camp that loves his modern persona, the approach to older songs as well as the more modern albums. Tranquility Base was certainly a slow burner but once you get beyond the whole "where are the guitars", it's a ballsy as fuck album that rewards relistening.

Appreciate that this is a GNR forum, but I personally think that the Arctic Monkeys are a far more relevant and important band to the current landscape than GNR are (and have been for some time).

    Cue the dislikes.

At least with GNR, we do get 3 hour plus shows. Metallica and RHCP play half that, and down here, the RHCP tour costs at least 30% more than GNR for the same seats in the same stadiums. The only caveat to this is they are touring with Post Malone, who would demand a higher cut than whatever support acts GNR throw together.

I guess that's all well and good, but there is still then a question of quality. If it was 3 hours of high quality performance then that would be fine, but the general consensus seems to be that Axl at the very least is a weak link (I can't really attest to whether that is the case - only going off the comments here and YouTube videos). I would rather take a 1.5 hour show from RHCP where they deliver a high quality show than a 3 hour patchy, or indeed, sub-par show. I did see the RHCP this year in London and it was probably one of my favourite gigs I've ever been to (up there with the spectacle of Hans Zimmer and the carnival that was seeing Arcade Fire back in the day).

Saw Porcupine Tree live this year and it was one of the greatest shows musically I have ever witnessed - Steven has definitely got the midas touch relating to anything he does with music be it creating or remixing!

I was contemplating going to a show but I had so many other commitments that I just couldn't really make it work. Here's hoping they don't go on another 10 year hiatus!

It’s says a lot that I’m not familiar with Porcupine Tree/Wilson’s solo stuff….yet his reputation for his work on classic prog remixes/surrounds is unparalleled. So much so that if you have Wilson attached to your project it’s almost a guarantee of quality.

We can only hope that the surround discs get a separate release at somepoint - particularly given the positive feedback of NR22.

Hopefully he discusses the topic on his podcast!

His podcast tends to focus on a specific year of music. I'd be really interested to hear his thoughts on CD so here's hoping 2008 makes an appearance!

Apparently the others WERE remixed for a supposed surround disc but the band/record company rejected the mixes. Which is crazy really when they were remixed by Steven Wilson….arguably the worlds best. 🤦‍♂️

Nice to see some love for Steven. I'm actually on a train listening to his podcast at the moment!

I'm sure it had been re-worked by the time Bumblefoot got to it, and has probably been tinkered with since then. But unless it's been completely overhauled, I agree the best case scenario is it'll be a mediocre song with a good solo... but that could be said about the Village demos, too.

I can see why it was replaced on CD though, it's another mid-tempo song similar to Catcher, Prostitute, TWAT, but it's not nearly as good as those songs.

I think this is a good point. I was on holiday recently and put on the RM1 disc and I remember thinking to myself that the album was very mid-tempo heavy. For better or worse, the version of CD that we ended up getting was more sonically diverse than what we could have ended up with.

I mean, it would be a very good way to get themselves back into the public consciousness over here...but I just can't see it happening...

Agreed but it seems off (I guess in the same way that Metallica seemed off a few years ago). It's nothing against GNR (I'm obviously a fan if I'm on this forum), and not necessarily a comment on their quality (or lack thereof) as of late. But if the rumours are true and the Arctic Monkeys are going to be one of the headliners (I'm seeing them next year anyway, but I think they are overdue another headline set at Glasto), I'm not sure I can visualise GNR going down too well.

Then factoring in their current form, it could be quite damaging to the brand, at least amongst casual viewers, made worse by likely having Arctic Monkeys at the top of their game as an immediate comparison (although maybe seeing Elton John do something would soften the blow a bit - not sure on his current form as I'm not die hard fan).

I guess we will wait and see.

  13. In the UK - searched both State of Grace and Atlas Shrugged on Spotify and nothing came up for me in the general search (just a lot of audio books and Billy Joel). However, when filtering to 'Artist', GNR came up in respect of both tracks. I also tried searching for Perhaps and there was no GNR reference, 'Artist' search or otherwise.

    I guess time will tell...

    I’ve seen some great shows!

in the last month I have seen Tool, Jimmie Allen (free concert), John Mayer, Mark Lettieri, and the Eagles

Ah Mark Lettieri is on my list of artists to see (them and all of the Vulf/Snarky group). How was he?

  15. Had Hans Zimmer and Genesis this past week (both rescheduled from years gone by). Next up is the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in June in London and I think that's all for me this year (starting a new job in May so maybe not the best time to cram loads of gigs in!)

She probably meant some kind of collaboration between Melissa and Brain. Him rejoining GNR seems unlikely, as the band seems to be happy with frank

Certainly possible, although the account that commented was specifically a GNR fan account (apologies that I can't recall the exact Insta handle). Also, they (Melissa and Brain) have of course just released their Festive collaboration album which was also referenced in the comment.

I agree that it is remarkably unlikely that Brain would return to the fold in any full-time capacity but just thought I'd flag as it seems we are (as is often the case) starved for any meaningful news!

    All the best!

    Who's Brain?

He was (maybe still is? It's all a bit weird) the drummer for GNR.

He played live from 2001-2006 where he left mid tour as his wife gave birth I think. Then he pretty much never came back. He's still credited on Chinese Democracy etc. and still seems to have some involvement in the creative side of the band but I know it's a topic that has been discussed previously as to how involved he actually remains in GNR-land.

Well it's not really uncommon these days. Many artists these days release tons of singles throughout the years before they finally drop the album.

I think something like that happened with the most recent Tame Impala album. I remember Patience and Borderline were both released in Spring/Summer 2019 with the album finally dropping on Valentine's Day 2020.

Also interesting that Patience wasn't on the album at all (has now appeared on deluxe edition) and the mix of Borderline was a wholly different (albeit inferior) mix to the single release.

    So, there is hope...

  19. I think I must have had a similar revelation yesterday when I was listening to UYI 1. I guess in my mind it's all tracks like Don't Cry, November Rain etc. (I.e. big earnest tracks) but then you forget just how much fun a track like Bad Obsession is, or as you say, the random sounds or phrases littered across the album in various ways.

It's probably something that doesn't get talked about enough, but that may be to avoid comparisons with the lighter hearted bands of the time.

At my age (27) I can tell you that the people who hear about new music through radio is miniscule compared to the amount of people who discover new music through streaming services. And you can put whatever the hell you want out on streaming without worrying about if it gets played on radio or not, people WILL stumble across it anyway. They'll just promote it with ads on spotify, Instagram, and Facebook, and that's how you get tons of new listeners in 2021.

This. At my age (31) I used to discover new (old?) music based on recommendations from friends or father figures (Supertramp, Beatles, Neil Young etc.). But with modern music it's all about Spotify. The amount of great artists I've accidently stumbled on from random Spotify playlists is crazy. Khruangbin, Mac DeMarco, Tyler, Vulfpeck, Cory Wong, Snarky Puppy... All discovered because on a random playlist one of their songs piqued my interest enough to go and deep dive their stuff and now I consider some of them amongst my very favourite artists.

Of course, for some bands (maybe GNR fall in here) super fans will just be keeping up with the news. I tend to be like this with groups like Tame Impala or Radiohead or even Arcade Fire, but it's so easy to keep up to date through Spotify or whatever.

    Pitman wakes up.

While sipping coffee, he turns on his PC and clicks on a music feed.

His phone keeps beeping with messages, but he thinks "Leave me alone, you dicks, it’s 9 in the morning."

A headline jumps out at him.

He stops the coffee cup halfway to his mouth.

    His eyes widen.

    Silence.

"This must be a hoax," flashes through his head.

    He clicks on other sources.

    It’s everywhere.

His phone buzzes with various social media, e-mail, and bank account sounds.

He puts the cup down and looks outside the window.

Thoughts running through his head. "Is this actually happening?"

"I mean, I know you fucked me over hard in that lawsuit, but… is this supposed to be some of compensation? Why this? Why now? What the fuck, man?"

He picks up the phone. A few missed calls and unread messages from Dizzy on the top of a heap of other messages.

"Should I open a celebratory bottle?" is the last thought we hear before leaving him there in peace.

    God bless Chris Pitman
