Where on earth do you people hear these things these days?

Popping in for my yearly visit because a GNR leak takes me back to the fun days of 2006 lol. Seems like I missed actually getting to hear it but I'm sure it'll be out soon enough, is this a track we've heard before in demo form or something else?

Saw The Mars Volta last month and my god it was incredible, never thought I'd get to see them at all, never mind get to see them play most of Deloused and like half of Frances the Mute. Incredible show.

Seeing the Menzingers with Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties (which is the side project of the Wonder Years' singer) next Saturday, and then the Wonder Years in full on September 4th which I'm super excited for. I also caught Coheed and Cambria two weeks ago for their first headlining arena show ever which was special as fuck, they were amazing and the crowd energy was unreal too.

Got tickets to see Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead play with their new band The Smile in November, pretty excited for that since their album was basically just a new RH album.

Saw Limp Bizkit, Nine Inch Nails, and Thrice in the past month. Had a blast at all three.

There was a LOT of stuff I loved this year, and even beyond the stuff I flat out loved, there were a ton of other releases I enjoyed a lot too. I think I listened to more new music in 2021 than any other year, and with 30 closing in I'm happy that I'm still able to keep my ears open.

Anyway, I stand by my point. If I ask younger people (20-25 years) at my work about GNR they barely know anything but the logo. The same goes for Nirvana. It breaks my heart each time. On the other hand, they all can name at least one Metallica and AcDc song each immediately. Of course, this is not representative but it gives some kind of a feel.

By the way, the same goes for clicks, views and chart positions as others have already stated above.

In the end, I, other than the poster I was referring to, do not wonder that Absurd does not cause more buzz and views on YT don’t blow the roof. 

 

Granted, I wasn't expecting it to be some sort of mega hit or anything. I figured it'd do modest numbers - maybe 1-2 million views - because I know they're a legacy act largely thrown by the wayside by everyone except die hards, old heads, and "ugh I was born in the wrong generation" kids. I thought the name would be worth a little more buzz than it's turning out to get, but it just goes to show how badly they fumbled this reunion. From how late in the game they decided to do it in the first place, to waiting 5 years after the first reunion shows to drop a polished turd from 20 years ago, it's just...comical, really. I want to be upset but I can't, because Axl and TB haven't given us any reason to expect anything short of them being the musical version of Murphy's Law.

For obvious reasons, I haven't seen a thread for 2021 shows. But since it seems like tours are slowly happening again, what do you have lined up, or have already seen?

On Thursday night I got to see my first show since February 2020, a show I bought a ticket for in January of that year and waited 17 months for. Got to see Between the Buried and Me play a two set show, with one set being a deep cut setlist and the other being a full album performance, and I had a fucking blast. I knew I missed shows, but actually being back in the crowd and on the rail for one of my favorite bands was such a great feeling. I'm thinking about catching Deafheaven and Thrice in October, but with Covid spiking again I'm not sure how much I can count on those plans at the moment.

Kind of wild that the song hasn't even cracked a million views on Youtube yet. I know rock has fallen out of the mainstream pretty hard, but I thought there would at least be more buzz or curiosity about the first GNR track with Slash on it in like 30 years.

I was SO excited to see news of GNR releasing a new single...only to find out it's just fucking SILKWORMS of all things 😂

I honestly cared more during the CD era than I do now. As much of a shitshow as that was, at least there was always an air of mystery, and you truly never knew what was gonna happen next. Between that and the idea that Axl was pursuing some grand vision and a vastly different sound for GNR, it was such a fun thing to follow even if it got insanely frustrating. And all that said...yeah, I am glad I got to see something close to the "real" GNR live. 12 year old me would've never imagined that I'd get to see Axl, Slash, and Duff playing GNR songs together in person, and despite Axl sounding pretty iffy it was an absolute fucking blast to see the dudes that got me into the one passion that would stick with me for life, music. But for the price I paid, and the fact that the setlists basically never change in any meaningful way, I don't really feel the need to drop over a hundred bucks on a ticket again to essentially see the same show (with likely even worse vocals).

And, the worst part? Yeah, I don't really think I'm interested in new GNR music anymore either. Axl, Slash, and Duff haven't written music together in well over 25 years, and they're all coming up on 60 years old. I don't think it would feel very genuine if they just tried to write some "bad ass" rock and roll record, and I also can't imagine that any such material would be anything but "okay" at best. The best case scenario would be if they aimed for a more mature rock sound, something more experimental and emotional, but between Slash's love of just churning out '80s blues rock forever and Axl's inability to finish anything, I don't see that happening. And the fact that they've been endlessly cashing in on the nostalgia touring circuit for 5 years tells me that they're probably aware of that as well, and I don't really blame them for it. Because like I said...they're almost 60 year old multi millionaires that have proven themselves decades ago, they don't have to give a fuck for the rest of their lives. If they ever do drop new music, of course I'll listen to it and hope to be thoroughly proven wrong. But to me, the reunion basically ended up putting to rest any hope of GNR being a band that continued to evolve and push themselves forward in any capacity (and we didn't exactly get a ton of that during the nuGuns era...).

It all just sucks, because I was so damn excited to see these dudes finally reunite. I had hoped we'd get a couple of awesome tours (and we got that) and one final album that they all poured everything into, to end the band's career on a higher note than anything that had happened since the Illusions. But that ship sailed a long time ago, and all we're left with is this dying husk of a band.

It probably would've sold decently on the back of the GNR name, plus the curiosity of wanting to see what the hell Axl was doing. But I think critically it would've been mostly written off as an aging rocker trying to copy the new trends of the day instead of following a more unique vision, even though it seems like his love of that style of music came from a really genuine place - that wouldn't matter to the reviewers. I really do wish we would've gotten that version of CD and maybe another record of more experimental nu-Guns stuff, I really think Axl was onto something with trying to massively shake the formula up given that he had a totally different band. An album full of industrial-esque stuff like Oh My God is honestly like my dream GNR release at this point, I loved the fire and murkiness of that song.

Now that the year is all said and done, what were everyone's favorite releases of 2020? I personally listened to more new releases than I ever have before, partly thanks to lockdown and partly thanks to Kingdom Leaks (which as of tonight is no more). Here's my top 15:

So, I haven't listened to any Bucket in years...if someone had to pick 2 or 3 Pikes that are the best of the best for me to dive into, what might they be? Given how many there are that's probably not an easy ask, so whatever happens to come to mind first is fine.

Woof. After what, 8 singles already? I can definitely write this one off, this is musical Xanax.

I keep hoping and praying that Billy puts something good out again. I followed the pre-reunion years fairly closely and both Zeitgeist and Oceania have some solid tunes, but they're not great albums. So then I hoped James and Jimmy coming back might light a fire under Billy's ass and really get something great out of him again...and instead we're getting boneless synthpop that's not far from the stuff he was trying to do ten years ago with the Teargarden crap. Billy hasn't really evolved his style at all in a decade and it absolutely fucking baffles me that this band has three guitarists and one of the best rock drummers of the 90's in it, yet these songs have almost zero guitars and drum machines all over them. Plus the songs are just lazy as fuck, all four of these songs have maybe two sections each and Billy sounds comatose on them.

If you would've told me in 2006 that one day Slash would be saying the same things about new music as Bumblefoot and Fortus used to, I'd probably have an aneurysm.

Nothing. This band is long past the point of doing anything but the occasional tour, and they're either not savvy enough or willing enough to embrace things like an active and open social media presence or unique online events during the Covid era. I'd say we might get ONE brand new song from the band before they eventually call it quits, but I don't see them ever going into a studio to bang out a full length album.

I mean, dude is part of one genuinely amazing front to back album (Appetite), a mixed bag of great songs and filler (UYI I & II), a shitty cover album, and what amounts to a solo album that took 14 years to make and that a LOT of people hated. The prime of his career was what, four years long? Axl is the reason I'm a lifelong fan of rock and music in general, but let's be honest, the dude flamed out hard and wasted the majority of his career doing fuck all.

Two weeks after it dropped and I'm still listening to Run the Jewels 4 almost daily. Shit SLAPS and the lyrics are pretty powerful and timely.

CD was the first vinyl I ever bought as a teenager, but man it's such a garbage pressing. Very staticy and starts getting really bad towards the end of each side. The mix itself sounded like it was solid but it was hard to get through in light of the noisyness of it all.
