I had the same attitude before the reunion, but really only because I never thought a reunion would actually happen between Axl and Slash lol.  I was just really looking forward to whatever would have been the follow up to CD and the band at the time being a real band and releasing music and just doing what they do.  It was frustrating because the band was ruining all of their potential chances at any sort of creative momentum moving forward

But honestly, this reunion kind of made me honest with myself and realize that the only reason why I was so into the CD era is because it was all we had.  Now, Slash is back, Axl is back to being awesome vocally, the band kicks ass, and there is more going on now that is awesome than the entire CD era combined - in my personal opinion of course.  So it sucks that nuGNR was built up for nothing but at least we have "the real thing" to enjoy now

I don't know how to feel, honestly. For me, I was just genuinely interested in that industrial/electronic sound Axl was gunning for in the late 90s/early 2000s, and hoped that the new band could carve their way out of the shade of the GNR name by at least a few inches. In a way, the reunion almost feels like the band/Axl accepting their status as a nostalgia act once and for all. As flawed as the CD era was, there was always at least that slim chance that something truly new for them could happen. But on the other hand, I can't help but feel happy that the band that first got me into music at 12 years old is (mostly) back together and kicking ass, and who knows, maybe they'll actually make really great new music together at some point.

Exactly. I could understand Tommy feeling bittersweet about the whole thing. I'd be dissapointed if I put years into something that would never even see the light of day especially when I've been abused for not being duff mckagan.

Hate to say it but,  it's true. Axl blew it as far as the Chinese democracy era went. And before someone reading this tries to manipulate or twist my words, NO the new band would not have outdone the old gnr. But considering the amount of work the people involved put into it, it's a shame we couldn't have gotten at least another album out of that era. But hey, we should get Chinese leftovers regardless if music ever gets released again so..

The only thing I ever wanted from the CD era was for them to deliver on just being a band. I didn't need it to be as good as the old GNR, or even sound the same, I just wanted some albums and decent tours. It was a good opportunity for Axl to break the mold, do something a little different, at least justify to the world that he had some reason for keeping the name, but he literally wasted roughly a decade altogether doing nothing. It was depressing then and it's more depressing now.

  3. Saw Deftones for the third time on Tuesday and had a fucking blast. Probably the best time I've seen them yet (partly because I didn't have to defend my tiny ex at this one, unlike the last two). Actually had a few surprises setlist wise and I spent the whole night on the rail, even high fived Chino when he dived in the crowd. Great night all around.

This is what I don't get about Axl. So many people (including Slash, Duff, etc) keep talking about how Axl is so intelligent, so smart, yadda yadda...

And yet he's apparently dumb enough to fall for these kinds of ridiculous frauds? What the hell

It's less about being dumb and more about being emotionally vulnerable enough to hope that shit like this is a solution to whatever might be wrong in your life.

Decks Dark.... Omg. In love with this song. What a great album.

After playing Burn the Witch and Daydreaming to death because of the videos, having Decks Dark being the first "fresh" track put such a huge fucking grin on my face. It's so gorgeous and intimate, just like the rest of this album. I wasn't sure they had it in them after TKOL, but wow.

Absolutely dreadful. Never understood the love for these guys or Coldplay. So boring. Soccer Mom music

I like a lot of "bad" music too, though. So what can you do.

If fans of theirs like it - the ?? for them, congrats on the new song and new album.

    *****

Fans - give me the name of the best radiohead song.

    Maybe suicidal soccer moms.

  7. I'm just meh on it, honestly. It's cool seeing Slash and Duff onstage together again with Axl, but outside of that, I'm not sure I feel any sense of purpose or urgency from this reunion. So far I don't get the sense they're much of a "band" outside of getting on the stage and playing the songs, same as the nu-lineups. I guess I'm holding out to see whether or not this is a legit reunion or just a last run at the till.

  8. 1. Death Grips, July 2015 - Simply put, I've never experienced more pure energy at any other show than DG. The energy of both the band and the crowd was insane - the band for being able to play nearly two hours straight without a gap between any of the 20 songs they played, the crowd for being crazy enough to be the only time I've ever feared for my safety in a crowd, the surreal fact that I was even seeing them at all given their "break up" a year earlier. Next level shit.

    2. Protest the Hero, December 2013 - I'd been a fan of these guys for five years before I finally got the chance to see them, and in that time they became one of single most important bands to influence my taste in music and my own guitar playing. Besides being note-perfect the whole show, their singer Rody could have a career in stand up with how he can command a stage with banter in between songs. Got drunk, screamed my head off to every word, lost my voice, had a great time.

    3. Circa Survive, March 2013 - I actually wasn't all that familiar with these guys when I first saw them, I only knew their most recent album at the time. But I was blown away by the crowd and the band, because the atmosphere of the show made it feel like a big ass family, in one of those impossible to explain ways. I immediately dug into the rest of the band's music after this show and fell in love with the band, so it was a pretty important one for me. Also, it's the only time I crowd surfed and got myself a better spot instead of going over the rail - I got dropped two people behind the rail and had a great view the rest of the night!

    4. Cloudkicker, April 2014 - This dude is another huge influence on my music taste and playing, and this tour was (so far) a once in a lifetime chance to see him play. Ben never toured the Cloudkicker music before or after that month and besides getting to see a ton of my favorite music get performed two feet away from me, when I thought I'd never have that chance, I got to talk to Ben between sets and get a picture with him too. It made the trip back to PA from NY worth it despite the fucking torrential rain I almost washed my car out in. :P

    5. Nine Inch Nails, August 2014 - Even though I almost never listen to NIN anymore, I couldn't pass up the Death Grips/NIN/Soundgarden tour (which DG later dropped off of). Soundgarden was good, but NIN's stage show and the pure emotion Trent could still pour into these twenty-something year old songs both left me speechless. By the time Hurt closed out the set it actually made me tear up a little, so I think it left a pretty powerful mark on me as far as live music goes.

  9. The Fall of Troy - Doppelganger

The Fall of Troy - Manipulator

The Fall of Troy - Phantom on the Horizon

On a total kick with these guys ever since they announced they're finally releasing a new album after 7 years. Forgot how much I loved some of these songs.

And ... Sympathy For the Devil.  (Again, this isn't a popular one for many people, including the band, since it was made as the band was breaking up. But I actually love this rendition of the song and even use it as my ringtone on my phone).

Plus it'd be pretty poetic to have all the guys play it together like it should've been in the first place. Like, "hey, I know I screwed this up the first time, how about we do it right now?".

"Mood and texture" is exactly what I wanted to hear from this release. Can't wait to give it a listen.

Yeah, me too. KNY was a little too clean and obvious for them and I'm really happy they've moved away from that, because this album is one that definitely needs a few listens to really sink in instead of just "getting" it right off the bat. (L)MIRL, Phantom Bride, and Rubicon are top tier Deftones.
