  1. I wrote some Guns N' Roses fan fiction when I was 15 for a high school English exam (well, I didn't specify that the band was Guns N' Roses, but it was very unsubtly implied). It was written from Slash's POV on the tour bus, on the way to the first GN'R reunion show, reminiscing about the band falling apart in the 1990s, the intervening years, and thinking about what it would be like to step out on stage as a part of Guns again. This was obviously before I got really into the CD-era line-up and lost interest in Slash re-joining the band  . I imagine the prose was fairly abysmal.

  2. Abortions = Murder

    Executions = Great day out

American right-wingers' overton window is in a different galaxy from anything I think is sane. I know that being unable to empathise with people is a weakness, but I just can't understand why they think any of the things they believe are good are good.

Let me put it this way. Let's say I sing better than Axl, you want to see him or me on vocals at a GNR show?

The Appetite guys will always be the best in GNR because they created GNR and wrote the songs.

If you could genuinely sing those songs better than Axl, I like to think I'd give you a chance  .  I think it's quite difficult to create a universal rule for when replacing someone in a band is acceptable and when it's pure bullshit. It's something that's happened so frequently throughout history with such a range of effects on the overall sound of so many bands. I feel like the example you picked of you replacing a lead singer is obviously on the "high impact" end of the spectrum, particularly because vocals vary so strongly in timbre from person to person, and also lead singers are frequently the ones who write the lyrics, so the "honesty factor" of them singing about their lives is in play too, but it can happen. One of my favourite bands replaced an iconic lead vocalist of 25 years and went on to have a hugely successful further 20 years of career, including their biggest-selling single.

What people like in music generally is subjective anyway, so of course, your mileage may vary with regard to whether you like what you hear, and that's totally fair. I just personally think it's harsh to say to someone "you turning up and giving your best will never be as good as this other person halfassing it." I think I'd always try to give someone a fair hearing and judge them on how I perceive their playing to be rather than direct "you're not my real dad!" anger at them.

Looked at the price of those. And jeeze how much for a single candle?

    :o can't do that.

Can't do that, I'd miss my collection. Spent years collecting these.

Update on the argument. I conceded the shelf and things have settled down

Booo, you had all the facts and logic on your side!

  5. Because in 2010, the people of England decided that the Conservative party were somehow worthy of becoming the government of the United Kingdom, led by members of a rapacious upper class who were born into circumstances of tremendous asset wealth and social capital, but decided to blame the failings of their peers in the banking sector in 2008 on poor people not working hard enough. Enough of the electorate of middle England have lapped it up ever since that the government has only become more right wing, the safety nets have been covertly and overtly eroded and food bank use, which was practically unheard of before the Tories got into office, has skyrocketed.

Sorry if this comes across like I'm bitter towards England, I get that there are plenty of you who've been against this from the start, but it's just frustrating coming from a place where the Tories haven't won a single election in 70 years, still having them foisted upon you because enough of your neighbours inexplicably find them acceptable.

  6. Neurodegenerative diseases are really cruel, a horrible experience for the patient and those close to them.

I guess Die Hard 5 will be the last entry in the series, which is a shame, because it was terrible in comparison to the others. I always hoped they'd redeem it with one more good one.

  7. Even if we don't always live up to them, there is a reason we have principles. It's obviously easy to say when your arse isn't on the line, but my heart is completely with those who have decided not just to let themselves be beaten into submission.

  8. I'm generally of the opinion that the Nolan trilogy was as good as it gets and nobody should even be trying to make any more Batman films, but part of me is almost curious to see Glasgow as Gotham in this.

  9. I'm reading that Ukrainian emergency services have been able to get in and put out the fire. That must be a hell of a set of circumstances to be working in, knowing that a hostile, invading army that have already fired upon and killed civilians still must have their weapons trained upon the site while the firefighters try to undo the damage they just did.

Meh. It's not switched on is it?

Closed down for maintenance, but the reactor that is on fire "does contain nuclear fuel" apparently. I'm no expert, obviously, but firing on a nuclear power plant in any circumstances does seem like the action of a collective of complete morons.

Yeah, I realized afterward that asking British citizens about working visas for non-British citizens is kind of absurd.  If someone asked me the same question about Canada I would have little idea.  Just curious if anyone knew of anyone who had a similar situation.

They give allowances for camera operators who come in to shoot movies and tv shows.  I feel like what I'm doing is not that different.

The itinerary for the three days is pretty crazy so I'm not really going to be making that much money going if I do end up getting the job.  More about the experiences than a financial opportunity.

Yeah, you nailed it there. It's not the sort of thing that people have to think about for themselves, and would only really have to think about for others if they were working in a field where colleagues were coming across to do work. I think you should be fine, though, it seems pretty benign and unobtrusive, but then, in my opinion, the British government are arseholes about immigration/borders/work permits etc., so what seems reasonable to me might be tied up in red tape by them. Hopefully not!

Got some life changing news on Saturday. I'm pregnant and this being my second, I was very nonchalant about my scan. Until I saw two babies on the screen! I'm having identical twins this summer. Still completely shocked.

Ooft! Amazing news, Grace! Massive congratulations to the three (soon to be five) of you! <3

  14. Dubai shouldn't exist, it's the vanity project of a few oligarchs with more ill-deserved money than sense. It's a nonsensical waste of resources to try and create/maintain a metropolis of that size in that sort of environment, and it's built off the backs of labourers who toil in horrendous conditions to keep other, more fortunate people in conditions of obscene luxury.
