  1. You can't win a Grammy for "Best Rock Performance" in today's pop culture, unless it has a guest appearance  by a rapper with "Lil" in his stage name, and features some computerized "beats" in the background, that over-ride the actual instruments being played. GnR can do a "remix" of Hard Skool, by bringing in a "rapper" with a name like "Lil Ding Dong"  to spit some "bars" during the guitar solo, and they might actually have a chance.

  2. To me, this is similar to when Metallica released "Until It Sleeps" as the 1st Single off of the Load Album. The band had not released any new material since The Black Album, and when Metallica re-emerged with a new look and sound, the single automatically turned die hard fans off from the band, due to how drastically different it was from any previous material. A lot of people failed to give the Load album a chance as a result.

If a miracle happens, and GnR actually releases a "New" album, some people may be turned off prematurely, due to hearing this single, and thinking the other material will be similar. If you haven't released anything "new" to the mainstream, technically since the Chinese Democracy album, I just don't think this song was the right pick to begin with. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I'm sure the current line-up can put together something much better.

  3. In all honesty as well....aside from Tool's first 2 studio albums, you can take any song off their last 3 studio albums (Lateralus, 10K Days, Fear Inoculum), mix them all up or pull songs here/there from each, and can still put together a a cohesive album that will work. Sort of like any AC/DC album with Brian Johnson....you can pull tracks here and there from all of them, and put together an AC/DC album.

That's not necessarily a bad thing....just saying, going in you already have a pretty good idea of what you are getting or are going to hear....No Surprises.

I don't disagree (although Duff claims that the only reason Arkeen got a song credit for It's So Easy is because he showed Duff an alternate guitar tuning), but saying he's one of the best songwriters in the band's history because he helped write a couple of songs, is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

I guess I should say then...He was a big influence on the band's direction for material. Seemed like he could help "guide" them a bit when putting songs together...I think that's a influence the band has lacked, no matter the members, since The Spaghetti Incident.

I agreed with everything you said until you mentioned that Arkeen was one of the best songwriters in the band's history. I mean, he co-wrote a handful of songs.

He helped write It's So Easy, The Garden, Yesterdays, Bad Obsession, "Crash Diet" (Which I wish GnR had formally recorded, instead of Asphalt Ballet), Helped develop guitar parts on Don't Cry, and aided in helping develop songs for recording on the Use Your Illusion albums....That's pretty good contribution over all.

  6. In reality, GnR is not the only band to have "semi-reunited" and have yet to release any new material....Look at System of a Down. There have been several interviews with members and rumors of the band working on new material that has never materialized. Seems like every year they keep making excuses as to why the band can't get on the same page, while in the mean time having only played live shows sparingly.

Don't know if anyone has seen SOAD's latest excuse for failing to produce material, but front man Serj Tankian is "frustrated" at drummer and brother-in-law, John Dolmayan, for his "American Political" views, for basically criticizing Democrats of late and praising Trump. (As if the band didn't need another excuse to put off working together.)

Also, don't forget Rage Against The Machine. This band has teased re-uniting, how many times now?? And if not for COVID-19, were going to charge ticket prices for their "reunion" shows, that made GnR's ticket prices look like a Wendy's Value Meal in comparison. Seems like that band only "re-unites" when a band member needs extra cash, and some how, just happens to be during an American Election year each time....(2008-Reunion Live Shows, No Album) (2016-Tom Morello forms "Prophets of Rage.")

I know it would be nice to hear new GnR material, but in reality, I don't have high expectations.  I think it is due to both the age of the band members at this point, and don't forget, the 2 best song writers in the band's history are not available (West Arkeen, Izzy Stradlin).  My best hope if for some sort of behind the scenes or new documentary from all the footage taken, during the Use Your Illusion tours.

  7. I remember watching the performance in my dorm room at college, live as it happened on MTV. I was pysched  when I figured out from Jimmy Fallon's hints that GnR would perform that night, just because I had seen some footage of the Rock in Rio performance, and thought this was going to be a big comeback to push a new album....

After I watched the performance, I was honestly bummed and disappointed!! The band itself sounded great musically, but Axl was the huge disappointment. Seemed like he shot his wad on the WTTJ intro, which was the only good portion of his performance. He was out of breath and full on Mickey Mouse the remainder of the performance. I couldn't figure out why his vocals were so bad and high pitched....and one of my friends said, "His voice now sounds like he must be a smoker to me." I don't know if he's ever smoked regularly myself, but after finding out about his vocal nodule surgery later on, it's evident why he still has the Mickey pitch.. Plus, after the obvious plastic surgery, I thought he was too young still to be going that route, and just didn't look like himself....But....

On top of this, I thought the band sounded good, but the image/look they put across was horrid!!! There was no unity or direction at all. You had Tommy out there dressed in a plaid suit....Finck looked like a half-Cinobite, half-Marilyn Manson band member, Buckethead......well, looking like Buckethead....Then Axl now having dreadlocks and a Jerry Rice Football Jersey.....What exactly were they shooting for, visually?? It looked like a mish-mash thrown together at the last minute. All in all, I just feel this performance did not benefit the group in any shape or form after it was all said and done...Especially since we didn't see a new album for 6 more years afterwards.

  8. Here is the crazy part on the OP's question....If you go to That Metal Show's site on VH1.com, if you have a current cable provider listed, you can sign in and watch any past episode of That Metal Show....You can watch any past episode of the show, except for the Axl  interview. It's on Season 9, dated 11/11/2011. When you go to Season 9, un-check the available episodes box, and it brings up all videos/episodes from the season. If you click on any other video, it gives you an option to sign in and view the episode  you chose with a cable provider....

Now, if you click the "A TMS Special Presentation: Axl Rose The Inteview....It has a disclaimer on the video that says: The Video is Currently Unavailable. Due to current rights and restrictions, this video is unavailable, but feel free to check back later. In the meantime, why not watch something else?"

So, basically you can see the video was once there, but now unavailable. Go figure.

  9. Talk about a case of misheard lyrics with this song...I was a teenager, and really listened to the original Rolling Stones version for the first time, (Keep in mind, this was back in the 90s, when we had no google, no internet, and if you heard a song of this age at the time, it was either on a classic rock radio station, or through an old cassette/LP as a lot of older albums were just becoming available on CD,) I really misunderstood one of the song's lyrics.....

    When I heard the lyric:

"When the Blitzkrieg Raged, And the Bodies Stank,"

I thought Mick Jagger was singing:

"When the Blitzkrieg Raged, I ate the Finest Steak."

You can't un-hear that, not that I put it in your head. LOL....

Thankfully, we're a click away from clearing up some embarrassing mis-heard lyrics now.

There was a post on Reddit a year ago from an account called u/ghostwhoknows

The gentleman with Axl in this video is Dave Lank, truly Axl's oldest friend. Dave, Paul and Axl all grew up together in Lafayette.
Fun fact - Paul Tobias was present when Slash auditioned for GNR. Paul said that Slash was the guy and Axl agreed. There is so much more to the Paul, Axl, Slash story that you all will never know. So much speculation that the truth would settle once and for all. But truth is also silencing so you all wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Dave Lank is a genius writer. Paul is extremely talented as well. They teamed up once before. Hopefully they will again sometime in the future.

I’m not Dave. I just know. I have facts

It was the account’s only post! A little... mysterious 🧐

I just read this post again....If there is any truth to this Reddit post, what if Paul Tobias is actually the "Oz Behind the Curtain" of GnR all these years, while Axl has been the "Great and Powerful Oz Apparition" appearing to all of us "Brainless Scarecrows." Wouldn't that be a huge plot twist revealed, as we're winding down the story of Guns n Roses.

  11. You all forgot....the Major Influence of Rose Tattoo's debut album: Rose Tattoo

    and

Surprisingly no one mentioned DJ Shadow's album: Endtroducing

++I read once that Axl would play the Endtroducing album non-stop at one point. Remember though, that album was released in 1996, and about 99% of the album is composed of samples from vinyl records, and was pretty much made using a MPC60 sampler. I'm guessing this album had some influence in forming Chinese Democracy and leading to speaking with Moby as a possible producer as well in the late 90s.

It's very weird that Estranged wasn't a single in the US or UK. Especially considering they made the outrageously expensive video for it.

For some reason it was only released in Europe and Australia / NZ.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estranged_(song)

It did reach #16 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart, but like you said, it appears the "single" version was released in Germany and Australia with "The Garden" as the B-Side.

I myself was a little confused when the video for Estranged was released on MTV. I was 12 years old at the time, and at that point on MTV, I had never seen a musical act put out a "New" Album (The Spaghetti Incident in this case) that featured a New Video, for a Newly Released Single off the Album....Only to then release a music video for a song off a previous album that had been out for a couple of years. I was thinking, "Ok? We have the Spaghetti Incident, and now we're going back to Use Your Illusion 2 for a "New" video?" I didn't know the story behind the video, and just wondered if this was a way to drum up more sales for UYI-2, and help bolster sales for TSI as well. I've always really liked "Estranged" as a song...but always thought that video was too over the top, a little strange, and outdated at the time as well.

By the way Corey is a huge fan of bands like Def Leppard. He covers song by Bon Jovi  and Poison at times at his shows

I saw a snippet on Facebook of a new song on the solo release from Corey Taylor....What the Hell was that???

It sounded like the offspring of a Slipknot, Five Finger Death Punch, and Saliva three-some.....and that's being generous

  14. Here's some GnR/Beach Boys parallels no one else has mentioned on this post:

+The Beach Boys, drummer, Dennis Wilson, befriended Charles Manson for a period, when Manson was an aspiring musician. Wilson even took Manson to record at his studio, in which Manson had an altercation with the producers. Then, in 1968, the Beach Boys recorded an altered version of a Charles Manson written song. Manson called the song, "Cease to Exist," the Beach Boys renamed the song, "Never Learn Not To Love."

+As you all know, on GnR's, 1993 "Spaghetti Incident" Album, the "hidden track" is a cover version of Charles Manson's "Look At Your Game, Girl."

By the way, I personally really liked reading this thread, and found the similarities between Brian Wilson and Axl Rose intersting.
