Yep, I remember in 90 in my high school first year I had long hair and Gnr t-shirt. I was cool. By 93 it was gone, Nirvana and Pearl Jam fans just run over me. I was dinosaur with long hair.

Personally think AFD and Lie's was perfect for me, plus MTV appearance made them big. UYI albums were probably overmixed (RnR must be unperfect, and pretty much all that things that Izzy and Slash said).

But videos tooooooo much. Slash emerging from water. Dolphins. Tanker. Wedding. It is like soapopera.

I'll add this...I was in Jr. High when "The Spaghetti Incident" came out. A few of my fellow classmates were also still heavy into the band at that time, we were just 13-14 or so. I actually had a classmate that wore a "Spaghetti Incident" shirt to school at times, and we had a science teacher that would tell him he looked like a "large intestine" with it on. I got introduced to the band hearing AFD first through "older" kids at our High School, then looked up he UYI albums on my own, especially after seeing the Don't Cry and November Rain videos. At that time period, we still listened to the "grunge" bands as well as hip hop at that time, so a mixture of what was on MTV. This is another factor no one considers as to why GnR might have lost appeal with the "school aged" kids though......

I myself at that time, didn't understand that "The Spaghetti Incident" was a total "covers" album. I had seen the video for Since I Don't Have You, and knew it was a cover song....and at that time, I thought Hair of the Dog was the only other cover song on the album when I heard it....So, I was confused by songs like Attitude, Human Being, Down on the Farm, etc....I thought this was "new" material at the time, and wondered what in the world happened on some of these songs? I didn't own the album, but remember borrowing it off a friend since we traded a lot, when you're a teenager and don't have much money. I probably listened to the album as a whole once, and wrote it off, because I just liked a couple songs in 1994. I was thinking, that I wish they would release another album to make up for what happened on this album...I didn't understand it was a whole covers album until a couple years later I guess, and by that time the band was quiet....then you find out Slash is no longer with them....At that point, I just moved on from them, thinking the band was done as a whole, and wouldn't be the same without Slash anyway. I still listened to the past albums every now and then in High School, but mostly stuck to what new music I would see come out on MTV...The only time after that I really got back into being "excited" for the band again was when I started reading on the internet/seeing the buzz about Axl regrouping the band around 200-2001.

In a way....I think "The Spaghetti Incident" album hurt the band more that what you would think, as appealing to youth, especially since there was no timely follow up that ever came.

  2. I read an article at one point, that focused on the build up to the "Use Your Illusion" releases. It basically stated that the anticipation was so high, the next GnR album was expected to challenge Michael Jackson's Thriller in terms of US sales...But, this was prior to finding out that this would be a Double Album release, and the article focused on the album being a single studio album, which was what everyone thought they were getting at that period in time. All in all, last time I checked the albums combined had sold around 14-15 Million US copies. That's still not bad at all!

I remember as it happened on TV back in '02, I had no idea and was shocked...In no way did I considered it a "disaster" as it happened, it was a fun performance and it introduced me to Buckethead who stole the show. Axl had a new look, his voice was noticeable not there but I didnt really care, it was him and my favorite front man was performing again (note, I had no idea about Brazil prior, etc...pre-internet days for me) I dunno it was one of the most memorable moments in GNR history for me (memorable, not necessarily the best.)

It was a moment of extreme optimism for me, the only disaster was 6 more years until CD.

But why the "rehearsals?" Why are they so coveted? They only played basically a quarter of 3 songs for the whole performance in a medley. Plus, the line-up had already played Rock in Rio 2001 together. It wasn't like this was the first time they practiced or rehearsed for a performance or anything. I'm thinking the majority of hard core fans already had knowledge of the RIR performance prior to 2002, as even MTV did a news update on it/showed footage. That performance was better all around anyway as well.

Heard from a reliable source, Dead horse AND Hard school will be played. You also might witness an ex drummer to hit the stage...

Anyone else think Hard School is was on the set list just to troll fans over the leaks?? From some reason, I just don't see Slash or Duff doing anything with the song since they are back in the mix. This may be Axl's way of trolling the fans, if he plans on never "officially releasing" the song. Just doesn't seem like a good "return" single to be released for a new album at all either....I would HOPE there are better options at work.

'93.  I still remember video premiere on MTV.

Vividly, Garden of Eden, Dead Horse, Estranged, Garden of Eden last single of UYI's.

Nov '93 TSI was already out.  Since I don't..., was the last video they made as a band and that was back in '93.

Gilby released Pawn shop, Duff released Believe in me like Oct '93 or something.

'94 there was complete silence, early '95 5 o'clock came out.

To be fair, you and the other person commenting on the release of Estranged are both correct:

The video for Estranged dropped in December of 1993, while it was released as a "single" officially January 17th, 1994

I think this confused a lot of people, because The Spaghetti Incident had already released in late 1993, then it's like your back tracking and releasing a video from the album prior to it, instead of a video for your new album? Bands didn't do things like that, at that point in time on MTV.

It’s their lives and their bands. In Axl’s case he had the name. If Metallica w Hetfield wanted to go country that’s their prerogative. Why hold artists to these preconceived boundaries? Don’t you want them to express themselves through their art the way they see fit? The Beatles went through a lot of changes between Meet The Beatles and Revolver. Some would say they sound like completely different bands. By the end Ringo wasn’t even playing drums on singles.

It’s your choice to like it or not as a fan.

Id say there’s a freak ton of what ifs for the above to play out the way you said above. Nobody knows how it would play out. Maybe this way is the only scenario where you’d get Slash back in the band. We can either accept reality or not

Can't say I necessarily agree with that. I think artists need boundaries with their work, to keep from losing their identities...Case in point...AUDIOSLAVE. The group is Rage Against the Machine, only replacing Zach de la Rocha with Chris Cornell, the other 3 remain unchanged. This is the whole set piece, just a different lead singer, but look how different the product/music is. To have released their work under the "Rage Against The Machine" banner would have made no since at all. Chis is one of my favorite rock singers ever.....I "thought" he could do no wrong musically...But watch this video below of Chris attempting Rage's "Killing in the Name Of." This is so out of place and Cringe Worthy with him on vocals...he seems lost during the whole thing. To have continued as Rage with Chris fronting the band just wouldn't have worked at all.  That's why a lot of the material Axl was attempting to produce during the Chinese years, just really doesn't fit style in my opinion....it was more of keeping up with the trends to attempt to stay relevant, as opposed to proceeding with what you're best at....

Time and again we keep discussing this point..
Axl -alongside original members- made GNR what it is today, one of the greatest bands in music history.
If other members leave, why the heck would he throw away everything he worked his ass so hard for?

Nearly no rock musician, as great as he might have been, made a great solo career, with very few exceptions here and there (Clapton, Ozzy, Sting)

Plus, I just don't think Axl sees it that way. Many songs from CD era, including recent leaks, have seen very important contributions by nuGNR members. Not everything was Axl's.
So the reason CD is not a W.A.R solo effort is that it's NOT a solo effort.
We might discuss whether any alteration of nuGNR was worth it or not, whether it was a good idea to go for a certain member, be we can't call CD a solo effort, for it's not!

I get what you're saying with contributions from others....but Axl would not have hurt the GnR' "Brand" at all by releasing the album under a different band name or solo album either way. GnR was already established as what I call a "Brand" Band...Bands that reach a status through marketing, to which they almost become a company instead of just a band. (Examples: Rolling Stones, Metallica, Nirvana, Beatles, etc...). Even if GnR didn't reform, you'd still see T-Shirts, merchandise, etc...in the pop culture world. When bands reach that status, it's Iconic at that point...he would have thrown nothing away by using a new band name or making Chinese a solo album. The Guns n Roses brand wouldn't just "die out."

If anything, I believe Axl would have made the album/albums "HE" wanted to make, and gotten that out of his system by the mid-late 2000s. Would he have been as successful as Guns n Roses under a new band name or as a solo artist....I don't think so....but that doesn't mean it would have been a failure. It would probably have been comparable to Paul McCartney under the Wings banner, no matter what he made, he wasn't going to top The Beatles, but did find his own success. But, by the mid-late 2000s, the original GnR members, or at least the majority, may have been ready to give it another go by that point. The Not in This Lifetime Tour could have happened 7-10 years sooner, another GnR album could have already dropped, and everyone could have been enjoying retirement at this point...possibly.

Think about this example....pure example....How would you feel if all the members of Metallica left the band, apart from James Hetfield. James decides to keep the Metallica "name" going, but hires 3 new musicians from a Non-Metal background. Puts out an album with a more pop/country sound that resembles nothing that Metallica attempted before, under the band name. The same thing would happen to James in that scenario....everyone would question why this release was put out under the Metallica banner, when no one is left but James, and it doesn't resemble the Metallica sound/style at all. Using the "Metallica" name would be wrong in that scenario as well.

Good music doesn't equal success. There's TONS of good albums and good bands that went nowhere. It's why bands "sell out" and go in a more commercial direction instead of fullfilling their artistic vision. I'm not so sure an album with those songs released under the GNR name would have been such a hit. It's so far removed from the original sound and people wanted Slash in the band not someone else.

But Axl Rose solo record? I think it would have actually sold more and would have established a long fruitful Axl solo career we would have got because it would have, 100%, been received well. It's great music, just doesn't fit the GNR vibe people wanted.

I've always thought if Chinese Democracy was released under "W.Axl Rose" as a solo album, instead of a GnR album, it would have done great commercially. Axl made a huge mistake releasing under the GnR banner.....Much like Van Halen 3 should have been an Eddie Van Halen solo album.  This would have been well received as a solo album I believe, and an actual GnR Reunion/new album may have came to fruition much sooner.

As far as Bob Ezrin goes, as far as anybody's opinion about Chinese Democracy and why there was never any "single material" on the album, despite having quality songs, need look no further than Axl.

Look at the songs on Chinese and now the wealth of material we have on our hands.

Why couldn't the guy just write a conventional song with a conventional chorus?

Almost all these songs have non-choruses, they have too many words, Axl has too much to say.

The key to crafting a great song is: keep it relatively simple. Catchy chorus goes a long way. The type of chorus that really suits a song has a few words with key words stretched to emphasis the music.

The type of choruses  GN'R, classic GN'R were known for were Anthemic. They were chants, they were sing-alongs, they carried themselves with the song. You looked FORWARD to the chorus.

Look at the chorus section or lack of, on many of these songs. Are there any that could be called "Anthemic?" In my opinion, only "Chinese Democracy" has a great chorus and an anthemic chorus, at that.

Look at songs like TWAT, Atlas Shrugged, Prostitute, Shackler's Revenge, etc...They might be cool, but there is no chorus for anybody to hang their hat on. There's hardly any more anthemic material on the album, other than the title track.

He got so deep in the weeds, trying to express himself, be creative and make a challenging album, that he withheld a key component to making hit songs: didn't make them catchy enough.

IRS might be the only other song on the album that fit into having a "chorus" so to speak (Gonna call the President, gonna call the FBI...etc..). I felt the same way...First time I heard Oh My God....I didn't hear it until at least a year after it was released, and I kept thinking there isn't a good set structure to this song, it's all over the place at times...especially the Dave Navarro solo added in, it all just felt out of place. I didn't think it was a "bad" song, but just strange and could have been simplified.

  10. This post just took things a little too far.......Everything you heard on the leaks belongs to this band. With Axl being the main creator/curator, it's his choice if he feels to release the material in finished form to the public or not. Look at how much material artists like Tupac, Prince, and Michael Jackson kept in a "vault" so to speak. Just because they don't release it, doesn't mean it sucks or isn't good, it can all boil down to finding the right fit for an an album, or potential future plans....Sometimes those plans just don't happen the way they hoped for or wanted to.

  11. Nobody else posted the cryptic message in the leak yet?

    Hi again, miss us yet?
    Wondering just else you'll get?
You should know by now, There's more to come.
One day isn't enough to have all this fun.

Two this time, one's byte size small.
But worry not, you'll soon have them all.
Smile, enjoy, dance if you must.
As long as you remember that hoarding's unjust.

  12. Am I the only one that saw this message with the leak?:

A small file this is, so a small poem too.
If Ric Flair was listening, we think he'd scream "Woo!"
The Nature boy was class, many people he creamed.
But really, no comparison, to "The American Dream"

Today it was two, tomorrow there's more.
The time periods are going to be worth waiting for.
Don't stress and don't cry, we've got your back.
In reality this whole situation is all kinda whack.

  13. I know there's nostalgia with the upcoming Terminator release, having both Edward Furlong and Linda Hamilton back in this movie to reprise their roles from T2 as Sarah and John Connor, and many thinking GnR might release Hard School as a new single for the film as a throwback to YCBM being in T2.....but....Terminator Salvation already did a great job with a scene giving GnR some props from T2....If you haven't seen the film, Christian Bale portrayed John Connor in this film, and in this scene, he still has a boombox similar from T2, which he uses to blast YCBM in order to draw in one of the MotoTerminators. It's a shame that the production company that made this film went bankrupt, because this movie was the first movie in a planned new Trilogy that Bale would star as John Connor in all 3.....
