I wonder if GNR legal went after the hundreds of GNR bootleg cassettes and CD's that contained the Use Your Illusion demos in the early 1990s

From what I remember, they were released overseas so there was nothing they could do about it

Releasing something domestically in the US like the Rapidfire demos and the Hollywood Rose demos obviously brought legal threats, but I don't think anything happened because Axl didn't control either band when he was in them (and he didn't write any of the Rapidfire material)

The Use Your Illustion demos are all over Soundcloud as it is too. I've found some by mistake, just searching for the finished version of a song.

  2. Just gonna put his out here...I've had the chance to listen to the Atlas Shrugged and Hard School leaks several times now....and I must be missing something. I'm just not feeling either track. I don't think either song was intended to be released on an album, but more or less didn't make the cut, and was kept in "storage."  I look at it like this, if another band or artist made both songs, that's not GnR or Axl, would either garner multiple listens, or be placed on regular rotation? Just from what I heard though, I see why each was kept off the final CD album cut.

  3. I might be in the minority...but after a few listens, I'm not overly impressed with the Hard School or Atlas Shrugged leaks. I can see whey each may not have been included on CD, but I don't think they are any worse than a few tracks that made the album cut....with that said....

Does anyone else think that the leak of "Going Down" a few years back was a better song overall than both of these leaks? I know Tommy had lead vocals and Axl sang backup on the chorus, but to me, that was a better track overall.

Listened to Atlas again, I still can't hear a song. The intro is the best part, then it's going nowhere fast. It's like a weak mishmash of Yesterdays and Catcher. And I definately hear Sweet home Alabama in there. :D

If they come out with that as a single it should come in that fucking laundry back with the surprise hat for free.

I agree in a sense...doesn't "flow" very well, just more of a "mixed bag." Not a horrible song, but I see why it didn't make the cut for CD.

I agree, I would hope this defeatist, I don't want to hear any new music, point of view is a small minority. I mean c'mon, using this logic, no band with members over 35 would be releasing new music. What a sad world that would be.

I agree with that statement to an extent.......Sometimes artists can hang on too long, much like a prize fighter still trying to continue to fight, when his prime is well behind him.  When it comes to rock bands, writing sexual or defiant lyrics just doesn't appeal the same when a band reaches their 50's-60's vs when they were in their 20's-'30's. I see how a contemporary artist or country artist could hang on longer, but bands tend to have an expiration date to an extent, as far as the content they write/perform.

  6. I'll just add my take.....When the "Not In This Lifetime" reunion first happened a few years ago, I was eager for the band to begin working on a new album. But, after taking time to view everything, I really don't think a new musical release is necessary at all.

    Why?

Just look at pop cultural musical history, even taking rock music specifically. I really can't recall an album release by an established band in their "latter" years that's a stand out, go to, or album even listened to more than a couple of times. For Instance, I'm sure if someone pulls a Metallica album to listen to, "Hard Wired to Self Destruct" isn't going to be the first choice that comes to mind. Aerosmith, do you really pull up "Just Push Play" or "Music From Another Dimension" to listen through that often? Motley Crue's "Saints of Los Angeles" anybody still have that on rotation regularly? Even, The Eagles....a lot of people don't even realize they released an album of new material in 2007 (Long Road Out of Eden). Van Halen..."A Different Kind of Truth" in 2012, don't actually think I've heard a single note off that one in all honesty. Anything stand out to you from The Rolling Stones?

My point is....sometimes it's best to let things be. The majority of the time, we have high hopes for something new from an artist, but end up disappointed in the end. I think it is because most established acts are past their creative peaks, and have settled into an easier lifestyle later in life, after being successful.

I know there is a buzz right now for a new Tool release in the next week or so. I know there was a single released, but I've really just heard a small portion of it. Looking into things, the band hasn't released anything in 13 years, and have moved into their late 40s-early 50s, but a lot of die hard fans want new music. There's only 7 songs on the main track listing, and the album is put at over 80 minutes in length. For 13 years, and only 7 songs, I can already guess, day of release you'll hear some of the same die hard fans criticizing as to how this is the band's weakest release, or biggest disappointment, and it could not be that bad at all...but too high of hopes will be placed on it just from the gap between albums.

I fear the same thing would happen with GnR. Myself, since it isn't the original AFD lineup, or even Gilby or Sorrum in the mix for that matter, just let things be as they are. If nothing new is ever added to the band's catalog, I'm fine with the great material that we already have.

  7. Got a question for someone who has more knowledge of the recording....Off the Live Era-'87-'93 album, Leading into Estranged, Axl says...

"It's a nice happy song, kind of like a walk in the park...uh...The sun coming through your window in the morning, it's a beautiful day, and you've got nothing better to do than commit.....____ _____???"

What does Axl say at this point? Sounds like something muffled or slurred?? I've never been able to make it out, and one version I've heard actually censors his speaking at this point. I'm sure someone out there knows. Thanks in advance.

Thats awesome, hilarious and kinda sad all at once.

Id love to hear it on the radio! My local rock station just plays ZZ Top, Headstones and Boston tracks on a loop with Black Velvet and Life Is A Highway sprinkled in every now and then.

This station is actually pretty good, they play everything from Classic Rock to current....On an out of town drive this past Monday, I heard this station play the following bands: Kiss, Rolling Stones, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Metallica, Rival Sons, Black Keys, Motley Crue (New Single), The Beatles....pretty good mix of new/old.

  9. I was surprised when I turned on the radio yesterday to a local rock station, and heard the station playing the "Rock the Rock" song Axl did for the Looney Tunes episode. To my surprise again, I heard it on the way to work this morning. Once the song finished, the DJ stated, "Rock the Rock, the latest release from Axl Rose." The station is based out of Hazard, KY and is 97.9 WZQQ.  Anyone else heard a version of this song played on the radio...anywhere?

  10. I noticed Jason McMaster from Dangerous Toys is singing on Welcome To The Jungle....Funny considering a lot of people referred to him as an "Axl-Knock Off" when the band first debuted in the 80's

Speaking of McMaster though....he does front a really good band call "Broken Teeth."  Look them up if you haven't heard of them, they're almost like a harder version of Bon Scott fronted AC/DC in a sense....Here's a sample below:

  11. I grew up with cassettes as a kid, got my first cd in 1993....Best thing about cassettes were the fact you could record actual "mix tapes" with what you want, until the late 90's everyone got into "burning" cd's. I had an older off-road vehicle that was built for riding trails in the early 2000's, and had a factory cassette deck in it, which I made use of, since a "cd" would either get scratched to pieces, or skip while hitting the trails. MP3 players/IPods hadn't quite caught on at that time either......but now.....with the use of streaming services such as Spotify, and the ability to use a fm-transmitter if need be in a vehicle.....I don't know why anyone would want to covert back to a cassette for any reason other than Nostalgia, plus, where will you even find a good playing cassette deck now-a-days?
