  1. Has anyone seen this movie from 2014?

It's about Brian Wilson, Beach Boys mastermind. You get into how he went from genious to loosing his sense, the recording of the masterpiece "Pet Sounds" with his unortodox legendary studio recording techniques and song compositions and his darkest moments when he became pharmacologically dependent/mentally manipulated by his terapist/manager/business partner Dr. Eugene Landy who kept him away from everyone else and from reality.

This film is a must see if even from a GN'R fan point of view - some people might establish comparisons between Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds/Smile and Axl/Chinese Democracy.

Brian himself says this movie is very factual and true to what happened.

  2. That sucks. But you have great amps already, give that plexi a try.

Maybe you should invest in a home studio equipement to record yourself? You've got great chops and would be great for you to record your stuff with nice quality.

Russ, to properly set up the D-Tuna you need to set it up with the low E string tuned to perfect D; than you put it straight back to E using the D-Tuna and adjust the intonation via the micro-tiny allen wrench.

Mny people set it up wrongly (in E) and then have the same complaint as you're having (when setting it to D it isn't perfectly in tune), here's a video that shows how to do it:

  3. It's not Slash's fault if a lot of fans read " It was probably way over due. It's very cool."" as if he and Axl are best pals and ready to launch a record and tour that they have been secretly preparing for a long time already.

Not that I wouldn't be happy about it, it's just that some of us have been fans for a longer period than others and know how these things usually go. It's been 20 years and severals "not in this lifetime" statements, still people get over excited about a "It was probably way over due. It's very cool."

  4. Just a reminder of a 2013 interview about the reunion:

"I understand the 'romantic' thing, the desire, the fantasy. Personally I haven't wanted other bands to reunite, or really enjoyed it when they have. For me generally something always seemed missing." "But Guns is my life, not someone else's. For me there hasn't been a way to make any type of reunion work regardless of money (either talk or legitimate) without jeopardizing what I feel is the well-being and best interests of nearly everyone I'm involved with in the GNR camp (including myself). People here have big investments of their lives in what we're doing. We've worked hard for what we have here now and continue to do so. I know what I went through then. I know what I and all of us have gone through since. People enjoyed the product and the entertainment our lives gave them back in the day, but they weren't the ones actually living those lives together. It's not somewhere I'd go back to or would want to go again. Life's too short."

    - Axl , 2013

On the other hand, guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal seemed much more open and honest about the band's new record. During a live chat at this year's National Fiery Foods And Barbecue Show, Bumblefoot gave us his clear stands about the whole situation, and he didn't seem too optimistic, to say the least. "You know what?! Just forget about a new record until it happens. I mean, I can't even begin... How long have we been talking about a new f--ing record? And I'm the only that doesn't bulls--t you people about it and I say, no, we haven't been in the studio together, no, we haven't started writing together as a band. If something came out at this point, it would be very old material that is just being released now. So it would be unheard material, but to me, I don't consider that a new record, I consider that just releasing old material from a band that doesn't exist anymore."

  5. I think that Slash's talent really shows is when he works as a band member instead of leader. That's why he sounded so great in GN'R and VR; the albuns wheren't just about Slash's playing guitar from the 1st second to the last, it had diversity - you could hear Izzy/Dave Kushner tones and licks to contrast real nicely with Slash's tone and playing, you heard keyboards / piano parts,... Slash's guitar playing real shines when there's diversity.

WOF had "too much" Slash in it; sometimes less is more.

I hope that for the new album he brings a rhythm guitar player to write and play on it and other musicians / instruments (piano / keys in particular) to make his guitar parts real cut the mix on the right moments, instead of being there all the time.

Of course this is just my subjective opinion.

  6. Looks great, Russ. Does the EVH holds tunning well when using the FR heavely? And when using the D-Tuna? I think the FR is dive only, right?

Omar, the search goes on; I tought you were finally happy with your tone!

One think that can't be overlooked is that the real test of an amp is on a band / mix context; I've heard some amps that have a great tone on their own but on a band they get buried / don't cut; in your case is particularly important as you play in a 2 guitar players band. I prefer trebly amps with good pick attack because of that, they sit well on the mix and cut as the bass frequencies are usually muffled by the bass and kick drum.

I'm still pretty happy with the Vintage Modern; have you tested on yet?

  7. Glad he's enjoying his current project; he says those kind of things (it's his best band, the songs on the writing are amazing, ....) in every project he has - I'm a GN'R fan since 91 and have followed all of theirs solo projects ever since, including Slash's Snakepit, Blues Ball, VR,... I've been around for long, since the Dust N' Bones maillist, snakepit.org, HTGT gnrlive.com,,...

I just feel that Slash's best chance to have been comercially sucessfull as a solo artist was when he released the Slash & Friends album, taking the example of Santana's Supernatural just years before which was a tremendous sucess; unfortunatelly Slash didn't faced the same luck, but it was great anyway, just didn't catched people's attention so I feel that Slash's solo projects are destined to have this average success..

I pointed the obvious - the Myles & Conspirators project is still Slash's solo project and it's his money on the table, he's the boss (which he said to enjoy a lot instead of being just a member) and it'll be hard to become really sucessfull. It's all great but GN'R is still GN'R for him, still runs in his vains - that's why he's just covered the Perlita tatoo with a gun, crossing the rose ;)

I have no doubt that Slash is happy with this current project; all I say is that if the chance came up he would reunite with GN'R in a heartbeat.

  8. Slash wants back in GN'R for long, that's why he showed up with guitar in hand once ready to joing them onstage for a jam. I don't see why he wouldn't want it - good money, good music, the fans would love it, everything says yes except for the regrtable things that were said and done by both camps.

Slash runs Slash feat. Myles Kenedy and the Conspirators - it's like runing a small company, the record needs to be funded, the musicians need to paid, the touring needs to be profitable,... I think that's all on Slash's shoulders.

Even VR made it big on the first record but the second record was a comercial disaster; they even canceled a European tour because they would loose money. Rejoining GN'R would be good for everyone but things can't be erased.

Anyway it's great that Slash keeps runing the Myles & Conspirators project, it's because they're successfull enough to keep doing it.

  9. Slash feat. Myles and the Conspirators is still the same concept as Slash's Snakepit was - a solo project, this time in colaboration with a top singer but still it's a solo project. I don't think it'll become mainstream and I feel that Slash wants to be part of a huge band again, like GN'R / VR was; just a thought tough.

Do you see Axl, Duff, Izzy, Steven there?!?

That is Slash rehearsing with the Conspirators yesterday, writting music for their upcoming 3rd album. You can follow the status of the writing and recording of this next Conspirators album right here on this board at:

  11. What reunion?

It's funny how Slash responds to a simple question with a simple answer and everybody extrapolates it into a reunion ongoing an everything else.

All this means is that they're being amicable in business and they're not an obstacle anymore for the other; that's why GN'R and Slash released recent DVDs with GN'R music. Slash means they're cool now; but they're not best friends anymore and even less there's any plans to do stuff together (altough it doesn't means they'll never reunite, but right now it's far from that).

  12. IFOS is my fav Slash solo record. Eric Dover was cool and had some stage presence, altough he had a very hippy "Alleluiah" live thing going.

Slash's playing on that record and his live tone was still on GN'R level to me and he was still wild / high most of the time, which reflected very well on his playing. As sad as it can be, to me Slash's best years as a musician were when he was on drugs.

The studio band was real great with most of GN'R guys there and Mike Inez from Alice in Chains and the live band was cool as well, with Gilby.

If you think about it, Slash's project with the Conspirators is still pretty much what he was doing with Snakepit I - he comes up with the songs, the singer comes up with the lyrics / vocal melodies and the band has his name first. The difference to Snakepit I is that Myles much more known than Eric was and the rest of the band is much lower profile than Snakepit I was.

Snakepit I ranks high in my records collection.

For reference here's a great concert from Snakepit I where the band is really raw and plays great:

  13. Slash says he's friends with Axl and everybody jumps into reunion hapening.

Just because they're in talking terms / being civilized doesn't means that they're pals again and playing together.

What's new? Marc had already said in the past that they're in talking terms, allowing the other to release original GN'R songs on their own current projects (live DVDs,...).

Slash is preparing the Conspirators 3rd album, Axl is busy in the studio as he showed some months ago on his twitter pic, Duff has his own projects going,...

  14. You've had so much gear already!

You just like to keep trying to new stuff or you don't feel you've found your tone yet?

As for modding the Plexi, I wouldn't do it but if you really want to try it why don't you try a switchable AFD #36 mod one it which includes a aditional gain stage?

  15. Use Your Illusion II's liner notes thank lead guitarist Slash for "the killer guitar melodies", which captured Axl Rose's vision. Slash has specifically stated that recording the guitar parts for this song was very intensive for him; he recorded it using a Les Paul Gold Top, using the rhythm pickup with the tone turned all the way down.[1]

This part isn't exactly true. For those who care about these topics, he may have done it for the last 2 solos but for the begining lead parts with that great feedback it was certainly the bridge pickup. He had his guitar signal split into 2 amps: one was the Marshall that you hear on the recording that was in the studio room and another one was a Mesa Boogie with the gain cranked and with the speaker right in front of him, so that it would easely create all that great feedback; of course on the recording you only hear the Marshall. In those days there weren't devices like a Sustainer around.

As for the rest, I'm sure Slash gave his best effort and that Axl recognizes it, that's why he thanks him as well on the Making F*** Videos Part IV where he talks about it. No need to start another Axl vs Slash thread with this motive which is a great song.
