  1. Platinum, for this record, doesn't mean SHIT. The album was a FLOP. With the buzz and anticipation it should have easily gone 10x platinum.

Yeah, Axl and Best Buy didnt promote it. Big Deal. This was arguably most anticipated record of all time. Fucking 15 years in the making, everyone and there mother was waiting for it to come out. The problem was and still is that it doesn't sound like the Guns n Roses we all grew up with. Forget the new band members and all that shit. This album didn't sound like GNR progressing, it sounded like a totally different band, and most GNR fans didnt give a shit. Many of those who bought the album were looking for a modern and updated version of classics like "You Could be Mine" and "Welcome to the Jungle", instead we got some substandard generic radio rock. The album is shit, in my opinion. This is why Death Magnetic sold 5 times the amount and Metallica is in the middle of an ultra succesful tour. ACDC has gone 4 times platinum with Black Ice and this summer they were filling FOOTBALL stadiums in the US. I am also a fan of these bands and wasnt anticipating these albums like I was Chinese Democracy. I enjoyed both these albums, two of my favorites progressing, I hated Chinese Democracy. It was generic garbage.

You guys need to give it up and just enjoy Appetite, Illusions, Lies and hearing the songs live. Whether it Velvet Revolver or GNR, but quit trying to love this album. It's vapid, souless and lacking everything that made this band the greatest American rock band ever.

Nobody knew about Chinese Democracy except the hard-core fans like us and the underwhelming single, Chinese Democracy, turned off casual rock listeners. Had their been proper promotion and a great single released at first(with a video), like There Was a Time, the album would have done so much better. Also think the Best Buy exclusive hurt the album. This album has plenty of heart and soul. Great lyrics, great guitar and perfect vocals...what more could you ask for? Chinese Democracy is so much better than those AC/DC and Metallica albums, it's not even funny. In fact, Chinese Democracy is the best album of the 2000's. You wanna talk about "vapid, souless and generic", well those words describe the new AC/DC and Metallica albums perfectly! Those albums overall are terrible but they sold well cause of heavy promotion, having the best song from the album released as the first single with a music video and touring as the album is released.

Its not that no one knew, its no on cared.

    Big difference.

And CD is not even close to being the best album of the 2000s posts like this show how delusional people on this boards are.

They didn't care cause the first single was the weakest song on the album, so because of that the casual fans thought, "well i'm not impressed by this first single so i'm not gonna give the album a chance". Chinese Democracy is the best album of the 2000's cause it has many good songs making it an all around solid album. There Was A Time, Catcher in the Rye, This I Love, Better, Madagascar, Street of Dreams, Sorry, Prostitute, Shackler's Revenge. Not really any filler in the album. Most bands will have 1 or 2 good songs and the rest of the album complete filler.

i agree. chinese democracy is the best record of the 2000's so far

  2. axl's not being honest with these gigs. he said the gigs are for us. yet, tonight, this one is not for us. axl's not honest with gnr fanbase

I said the same thing. But unlike you, I'm willing to give Axl more time to actually have a couple non-pretentious gigs. They obviously all weren't going to be for the hardcore fans. Some are for shameless self-promotion, like these last two.

what do you mean by shame less self promotion? i hope you mean shame less self promotion which gets the chinese democracy record finally to #1 on the album charts and not the shameless self promotion i think you're saying these shameless gigs are for

  3. if axl cared about what the fans wanted with the record, tonight's 'secret' gig would be broadcast live for us to enjoy on MTV. it's not going to happen. axl doesn't care. right now, alicia keys is working her butt off performing on all-star game show on TV. what about axl? what about guns n' roses? alicia keys isn't singing in secret. her performance isn't to only 100 people. alicia 'man up' for her fans. she gets it done. day in. day out. what does axl do? axl's changed. he's not the same icon he was in the 90's. he's not about the fans anymore. alicia keys is. artists like alicia care about fans. they do things like all-star. axl doesn't do these things anymore. axl doesn't do anything with new gnr records anymore. the illusions was axl at his peak. this record, is axl being mickey rourke

You continually don't get it. Axl/GNR doesn't run MTV or dictate what they play. He doesn't simply waltz into the MTV head office and say "you're playing this!"

Besides which why air a small acoustic club set? This is just a cool little word of mouth thing. Gets people talking. Clips get on YouTube. The band gets some free press coverage. You know they're going to do larger shows later - so what the fuck?

Your crying just makes you look seriously pathetic. The band is playing a ton of shows right now and you need to rag on them for this? And Alicia Keys? I don't fucking know/care about her being at the NBA All-Star game. I doubt anyone here does. That's a completely different audience. I'm pretty damn sure Guns N' Roses wouldn't have been asked - the audience isn't the right demographic. Honestly, I just don't get your reasoning. You're complaining about small things and ignoring all the great shit the band has done lately.

By the way bands playing All-Star games and the Super Bowel have nothing to do with fans and everything to do with boosting TV ratings for the networks and leagues airing those events. Yes, the fans benefit, but if you actually think Janet Jackson, The Who, Alicia Keys, or anyone else is thinking "I love my fans so I'm going to play the All Star Game in XXX Sport this year!" - well then you're seriously deluded.

alicia did all-star tonight for the fans. is axl doing this gig tonight for his fans? no. he's telling security ban the fans. they are not allowed in. those were on axl's orders. MTV would broadcast gnr gigs on tv in a heartbeat. the fans are starving for change. axl isn't giving the fans change. he's banning them from the building

  4. It wasn't just lack of promotion, but giving Best Buy exclusive rights at a time when people weren't in the mood to go shopping, not making the talk show rounds, touring right after the CD came out, that all played a part in it, but it still sold 1 million, which "these days" are pretty good numbers. I guess he had to wait until this year to start distributing to other outlets, but so far, amazon is the only one I've seen. The CD should've been released to different stores with different distribution deals.

I don't know if his managers or people who work for the company would've given him any better advice, considering how badly the entire music industry is doing.

I think one mistake was putting the entire thing out for people to listen to on myspace, as often as they wanted, instead of putting a few of the cuts out. But it also gives them a count of how many people are listening and which songs are favorites. It might have played a part in the setlist for all anyone knows.

Even The Spaghetti Incident went platinum.

THat was when people actually bought CDs instead of downloading them for free genius. Different time, different circumstances.

it's the same time. same circumstances. if axl listened to corporate suits. listened to his managers. if axl did what they wanted 'man up,' the album would've been a success. would have debut #1. axl didn't promote the album. let his lead guitar man walk away. axl's failure to promote the record, resulted in the industry turning its back on guns n roses. chinese democracy turned into the biggest flop in the industry. yet, axl acts like everything's cool with the record

If Axl is acting like everything is cool with the record, then maybe it is? After all, you have no idea what Axl's hopes and expectations for the album were. You know what your hopes and expectations were, but that's a different thing isn't it. If Axl cared, don't you think he'd do something about it? I don't think he gives a fuck, and judging by how he was acting during the recent shows, he's more than happy with how things are.

it's not about the gigs. it's about the record. the record flopped. the fact axl doesn't care shows a disconnect between him and the fans. the fans expected the album to debut #1. axl didn't live up to the fans expectations. if i was axl, i wouldn't be happy. i wouldn't be happy knowing i didn't give the fans what they wanted. a new #1 debut guns album. an indie band would be happy about this kind of situation. an indie band out of indiana with their first record would be happy with #3 debut and a few secret gigs. guns n roses is not an indie band from indiana. guns n roses is better than that. at least they are supposed to be. axl is making indie bands look like superstar bands. this is supposed to be gnr. the greatest band. not anything else. axl doesn't get it. axl doesn't man up

It's about the music, if you don't like it, that's fine, not everyone likes everything. But your argument about fans expecting it to get to number 1 is one of the stupidest things I've ever read, Axl didn't owe that to you or anyone. I love Chinese Democracy, for me it cemented GN'R as the 'greatest band', I hope it makes the band a ton of money, I think they deserve it. Axl cares about the music, he cares about his art - if that's not obvious to you now, well... it should be.

So, by your rationale if Axl had released a terrible album (Not CD, think something like Nickleback), but had promoted the fuck out of it and it had got to number one all over the world - you'd be happy?

I can understand a fan been disappointed that it didn't get to number one and shit all over Kanye West, but that's was more than a year ago - it don't really matter, I guess you'll find out for yourself.

I remember in the chats Axl did on the forums, Axl was asked if he had any advise for someone startin' out in the buisness. Axl pretty much told the person: "Don't sell out!"

And Tom Zuttaut said that Axl is one of the few persons he's met in the industry who TRULY does not care about money!

You don't see GNR music in commercials. Hardly any GNR music in movies. When SCOM appeared in The Wrestler, it was reportedly free because of his friend Mickey Rourke.

You don't see Axl using Twitter to plug Marshall amps or guitar straps. You (hopefully) won't see Axl doin' commercials for car-manufactures etc, etc, etc...

What Axl's done before and since the release of CD speaks volumes about his integrity and that he is truly in it for the art, BIG TIME!!

what speaks volumes is axl didn't promote the record. speaks volumes

So you agree...? Cool! Promotion is commercial! And what's happening now is, Axl is out performing his art. And I kinda like what's happening....

axl didn't promote the album. axl let the fans down

One or two angry people on a forum don't make up "the fans."

if axl cared about what the fans wanted with the record, tonight's 'secret' gig would be broadcast live for us to enjoy on MTV. it's not going to happen. axl doesn't care. right now, alicia keys is working her butt off performing on all-star game show on TV. what about axl? what about guns n' roses? alicia keys isn't singing in secret. her performance isn't to only 100 people. alicia 'man up' for her fans. she gets it done. day in. day out. what does axl do? axl's changed. he's not the same icon he was in the 90's. he's not about the fans anymore. alicia keys is. artists like alicia care about fans. they do things like all-star. axl doesn't do these things anymore. axl doesn't do anything with new gnr records anymore. the illusions was axl at his peak. this record, is axl being mickey rourke

  7. Ax man is the best video maker of all time. He must have some time to put some vids out. It's sad that so many half fans that would love to see them doesn't even know that they are out there rocking. I guess that is the very best way to show even the mainstrean crown that they are still out there - release a fkn video or two. Right now only us die hards know that they are up to serious rocking bussiness and only touring doesn't create a general buzz.

thank god for guns n' swedes. what about the next gnr music video? axl said 'the better video is coming soon.' where is it? the big parade. the big parade is passing by your window. the better video is passing by us. did you see it? was cool. awesome, dude. the best video ever. guns n' roses is back on mtv. and fuse too. gnr is back hooray

I'm not sure I'm following m8, but I am obviously referring to the November rain video, yesterdays video, SCOM video, and so forth. As far as I know they were mainly inspired by Axl.

What I was trying to say was that there are many people who like GNR but that do not even know that the CD is out and a video or two could make them see that.

    FRED

i feel ya, guns n' swedes. and many don't even know the cd is out cause axl didn't promote the record. you're right. a new gnr music video would spice things up. axl doesn't like the taste of spice. why, the better video sits in axl's gnr video vault collecting dust. lost fan opportunities

He doesn't like spice. Axl like liquor and whooores rock2

axl doesn't like to release music videos anymore either

  10. this has been discussed so many times already, the reason why Chinese Democracy didn't sell was because of illegal downloads, lack of promotion, lack of single, lack of music video, and a recession, its quite a long list isn't it? Oh and how about the fact that no one is interested in Axl and is so called band of hired Guns.

The real reason is because Slash is not in the band and fans thought the album sucked.

That is why the CD songs were played on the radio for a few months then we never heard them again.

If the album was good in fans eyes and radio DJ eyes, the songs would still be heard on the radio but they are not.

It does not matter what a few thousand fans think of these message boards it matters what people in the real world thing.

The thing I wonder if these songs were VR songs and not Axl songs would people still think the album is so great.

Im guessing NO, CD is a good album, but not great. It could have much better if released back in 2002, the songs are too dated for 2008 when it was released.

It would have been much better received back in 2002

amen. i agree with you. but the sad part is axl doesn't agree. that's the disconnect between us and axl

guns n roses functioned as a normal band in 1991 and 1992. axl gave us a successful single 'november rain.' gave us a successful video 'you could be mine.' gave us an epic video 'november rain.' axl promoted what hit the top of the charts on its debut 'illusions.' axl did interviews with kurt loder, which we enjoyed seeing on mtv. we enjoyed calling in every day making 'november rain' the most requested video of the day. on the video countdown hosted every day and week by john norris, adam curry, and karen duffy. we enjoyed 'november rain' knocking 'thriller' as the most popular and best quality video ever. we enjoyed the 'making of' dont cry, november rain, and estranged videos. we enjoyed rockin out to gnr on the radio. gnr dominating radio. i remember a radio countdown on friday night, a pop countdown, which for the first time had 'sweet child' 'jungle' and 'paradise' in it. i remember waiting in long lines at tower records, waiting to buy the illusions. the anticipation. the build up. the buzz. where was that with the chinese democracy record at bestbuy? where was axl's promotion? where was the things we felt comfortable with, normal with, we had in the 90's on this new record? guns n roses functioned as a normal band from 87-93. what about 2010? why can't axl function normally like he did then for today?

All I hear is some mainstream-fanboy-bullshit. I couldn't give a flying fuck about any of the things you listed, I don't give a fuck whether it's unpopular or popular to be GNR fan and those aren't problems, CD is out there for fans to listen and GNR is touring. Maybe you're just one of those people who want to be "cool" but being a GNR has never been about popularity, sure people were fans because it was popular but are they fans anymore? Answer is fuck no.

If those things have greater meaning to you well you're shit out of luck and have certainly chosen the wrong band and wrong forum, maybe you should try something like www.bonjovi.com and see if that suits you better.

at least bon jovi on the 2010 grammys. unlike axl. at least bon jovi performed a song the 'fans' wanted him to perform. axl doesn't take requests from fans. he has a 'set' list. set in stone. bon jovi stepped up. jon bon jovi 'man up' and performed on those awards for fans. what about axl? what about guns n' fuckin' roses? don't tell me oh 'slash was there.' that's not an excuse cause that's part of corporate 'man up.' don't say oh 'they touring.' axl has a private jet. he easily could have flown to grammys. performed with gnr. and flew back for the next show. axl didn't 'man up.' bon jovi did

  11. hey, man. i remember axl saying the better video would come out soon. i might as well get drunk tonight. because we still don't have the better video or a new gnr music video. we have illegal bootlegs. download files. youtube links. this is what we depend on. this is the steak without the sizzle. we depend on scraps getting by. we don't eat a 4 course meal. we've been burned. axl burned us

Well yea you sure have been waiting 'round these parts for long. Just shut the fuck up already.

We have the record, yet you are complaining like a little bitch that Axl didnt promote it, Axl didnt sell out, Axl doesnt care about us.. Boo-fucking-hoo. Try finding real problems in this world.

this is a real problem for guns fans

We learn that to be fan of this band you have accept the fact that they don't function like a normal band. If you can't accept that then you will never enjoy it here.

guns n roses functioned as a normal band in 1991 and 1992. axl gave us a successful single 'november rain.' gave us a successful video 'you could be mine.' gave us an epic video 'november rain.' axl promoted what hit the top of the charts on its debut 'illusions.' axl did interviews with kurt loder, which we enjoyed seeing on mtv. we enjoyed calling in every day making 'november rain' the most requested video of the day. on the video countdown hosted every day and week by john norris, adam curry, and karen duffy. we enjoyed 'november rain' knocking 'thriller' as the most popular and best quality video ever. we enjoyed the 'making of' dont cry, november rain, and estranged videos. we enjoyed rockin out to gnr on the radio. gnr dominating radio. i remember a radio countdown on friday night, a pop countdown, which for the first time had 'sweet child' 'jungle' and 'paradise' in it. i remember waiting in long lines at tower records, waiting to buy the illusions. the anticipation. the build up. the buzz. where was that with the chinese democracy record at bestbuy? where was axl's promotion? where was the things we felt comfortable with, normal with, we had in the 90's on this new record? guns n roses functioned as a normal band from 87-93. what about 2010? why can't axl function normally like he did then for today?

  12. Great album but considering the last Soundscan we had for the US was like 550,000 there is NO way that ChiDem has sold another 400,000 or so copies in the US.Zero chance. If it had,the album would have been back on the charts and I doubt is has been since early 2009.

you know why this is the case? axl didn't promote the record

Axl does things his own way ... I prefer to have a great album like CD and sold less than having a bad album and selling millions and be at top of charts, just my opinion.

Last The killers album is shit (for me, just my opinion) and has sold more albums than CD...

just your opinion. but axl once had a great album. the illusions. the illusions sold millions in Los Angeles. the illusions went to the top of the charts. guns n roses became the best band in 1991. just a few facts

  13. hey, man. i remember axl saying the better video would come out soon. i might as well get drunk tonight. because we still don't have the better video or a new gnr music video. we have illegal bootlegs. download files. youtube links. this is what we depend on. this is the steak without the sizzle. we depend on scraps getting by. we don't eat a 4 course meal. we've been burned. axl burned us

  15. If someone says 'Man up' one more time, I'm gonna throw up.

this is what the corporate types told axl to do. axl didn't listen to them. big mistake. and the new record isn't #1. this is what happens when you don't listen to the company. when you don't 'man up'

A big mistake according to who? Perhaps his goal is to do his thing on his own terms without catering to the record label or the media, and doesn't care about being, or even want to be, the biggest star on the planet anymore

that's a big mistake. according. according to the fans. the fans since appetite. the fans since illusions. the fans since the new band. the fans since the new record actually came out. this is who it's according to. it's according to them. that's the thing, axl's goals. his goals are not the same as the fans goals there's a disconnect between them. a disconnect between axl and fans. a short in the electric box. it's not catering to lable or media. it's 'man up.' the record label wants the fans to enjoy a new gnr music video. the record label wants the fans to enjoy a successful radio chart single. the record label wants the fans to enjoy gnr on the mtv vma. grammys. and other events like these. the record label wants the fans to enjoy gnr secret gigs and tour shows broadcast live on cable televison like mtv and fuse. the record label wants what the fans want. they want gnr to be mega 91 again. mega 92. they want axl to follow the pattern. they want axl to 'man up.' it's distracting axl doesn't share the same goals with label and fans. especially since axl's walked away from his 'elvis' throne being the biggest star in Los Angeles

The record label doesn't give a shit about any of that. They stopped caring once they cashed that $14 million check from Best Buy

And the only fans who have a problem with the way the record sold and how Axl promoted it are the ones who need their fan status to be validated by what other people think. These people are the ones who probably fell more in love with the GNR image than the music.

I find it laughable that anyone who considers themselves a big fan of GNR thinks their enjoyment of CD/this tour would have been somehow enhanced by Axl giving a million interviews to the press and promoting the album everywhere. Would that have made you like the album more? Would that have made you enjoy the concerts more?

the record label cashed the check. that's true. can't sugar it. but, you know what? the gnr managers. the new ones. they wanted the fans to have the comfort they had in the 90's with the illusions. why they signed on as managers. merck's replacements. both of them. they wanted nothing but the best for fans with this record. they wanted us to have what we got in the 90's. but sadly, axl had other goals. axl had other things in mind. axl didn't want us to have the same comfort level with gnr corporate stuff like we once had. axl is a different person. i want the 1992 axl back. the axl who gave interviews. who promoted gnr albums. who did award shows. who did other tv live events. who had hit singles like november rain. this is the axl i thought i'd get with the new album. the illusions comfort level with this record. axl didn't give it to fans. axl doesn't give it to us. axl gives us what we don't want

He gave you Ashba, and you love him right, Man up yo.

axl didn't give me ashba. dj volunteered replacing robin finck. dj gave me dj. but this isn't about him. it's about axl. axl refusing to do what 'corporate' wants him to do. what the fans want him to do. bring back the 90's comfort. a comfort, we had with the illusions. we don't have the same comfort with this. we don't have a successful single. no music video. no axl n' kurt loder or axl n' media interviews. we don't have promotion. we don't have shows on tv or dvd. we have illegal bootlegs. youtube links which 'infringe' on music. we don't have comfort. we have something different. something the fans don't recognize

Jesus christ man have a beer, smoke a joint, get laid, something!

hey, man. i remember axl saying the better video would come out soon. i might as well get drunk tonight. because we still don't have the better video or a new gnr music video. we have illegal bootlegs. download files. youtube links. this is what we depend on. this is the steak without the sizzle. we depend on scraps getting by. we don't eat a 4 course meal. we've been burned. axl burned us
