  1. I have no idea how one can say Axl's voice in '02 was weak. The Jungle intros were the best ever; he screamed his head off through LALD in a way he never could before or after '02, etc etc. He could sing Rocket Queen with quality...He could sing YCBM.... I understand if some people dont like the high voice, and I understand that his voice could waver a lot when he was running around and shit, but overall I think the '02 voice might've actually been his most powerful. He was determined to one-up the old GNR. He did it with a kick ass band, a whole new look, and yes, his voice.

  2. 2013 was slightly better than '11/'12, imo. I think he was pissed and got depressed when, after kicking ass in 2010, management didnt have U.S. dates set up for him. In 2010 Axl could have potentially really kicked some ass in the U.S., he knew it, and his plans didnt materialize. Therefore he let go a little bit, and decided to play it safe since 2011. That's just my speculation. Also, for someone who is such a perfectionist and "wont allow himself" to get into addiction, it's somewhat alarming to me to see Axl behind bars serving drinks, and November Rain at '11 Rio he seemed like someone who drank too much and/or took pills. I dont know if he had any surgery. But I think he can turn it on when he wants to. The Rio gig was a disaster, and the very next gig in Chile he sounded fucking awesome. See Estranged, particularly the end.

  3. I believe it is.

NB: Damn you Matt Sorum for spamming my twitter feed with your otherwise sensible stand on animal rights so that Bumble's tweets are at the bottom!

Matt's best tweets are the ones about gun control. You know the guy who owes everything to GUNS n roses and Velvet REVOLVER.

Can we just get rid of Ron and DJ and insert Izzy? Please?

  4. You tell 'em Uncle Jesse!

    Jk, I've always liked Gilbs.

Also, I've listened to TSI in the past six months more than any other GNR album. 1-5 and 12 are my faves. Matt is given a lot of shit and his twitter politics is laughable, but when it comes to just being a rock drummer, well, he rocks! One of the best air drumming in the car albums, ever?! Perhaps!

  5. One of the more constant talking points on GNR forums is how the 1992 Tokyo show was an abomination and you can't swing a dead cat without finding 10 better shows to release.

What is the problem here? I see a concert with a pretty good setlist. No major hits left out, and even a few tunes you did not get every night (Pretty Tied Up, Rocket Queen).

What makes these shows so allegedly terrible?

I'd say a big part of it is that fans are territorial and snobby; therefore, this Tokyo video which was released on a wide scale, resists their control.

That said, Tokyo looks bored to us because they arent tearing each other apart. So it looks like the band is playing to a dead crowd. It's in a big dark place instead of outside and exciting like Paris. There arent any rants or Axl jumping out in the crowd. They were a well-oiled machine going through the motions (like Metallica has done for 20+ years), which isnt as exciting, dangerous, or "GNR"

I dunno, anything people can bitch about, they will.

  6. I don't know, Axl's vocals were pretty awful during this period. Mickey to the max; how he can't seem to find some sort of happy medium between nail-gargling rasp and clean singing, I'll never understand.

Still don't get the obsession with Finck. What did that guy ever write? I know, I know, you'll say "Better," but what parts did he actually contribute? If it was just the lick in the beginning and the verses, that ain't saying much for his songwriting abilities! He's a hired-hand touring musician, just like the rest of Axl's troupe. I'm actually quite cool with all of the New Gn'R lineups as long as Axl sounds good.

I agree 100% about Axl. A lot of people complain about his voice now. I think it was at its worst during this period. And I didn't get into the whole freak show thing. Great group of musicians though, no question.

The cool thing about Axl's vocals in '02 is that they were strong and he had attitude. He was in much better shape then and sounded less winded than '11-'13 despite running all over the place then vs. doing considerably less these days. '02 Axl had some weak points, sure, but so did '10 Axl. '02 at times his voice soared to places I havent heard anyone else duplicate since, much like '10 Axl was gritty in a way I havent heard before (except old school Axl). YES I KNOW some other people can hit "the notes" but Axl's voice was like a fucking laser. The intro to '01 Rio WTTJ is about as good as it gets imo. The '02 voice is what made possible tracks like IRS, which is one his finest moments.

  7. "CLEARLY 2014 could bring big things for GNR." WTF Fernando of course it could, of course it should, but until we get something SOLID consistently going please dont insult us. He acts like, every year, GNR puts out a new awesome album.

    Nevertheless, I am optimistic.

    Axl/Izzy/Fortus in 2014.

    Still enjoying Going Down, btw.

    Good post, Fantomas.

  8. Axl Rose can kill two birds with one stone with the track: Gain credibility and sell records. It's the punk rock thing to do at this point. Going Down is a winner. Axl does better in looser, more organic bands. It brings out his best. Think about it: Izzy, Slash, Duff, and even Steven are some of the more laid-back, straightforward people in rock history; therefore its no wonder it created something great, and did something great for Ax.

  9. I think the song is excellent. MUCH more in the light of UYI than anything on CD. Izzy Stradlin singing lead and Axl on backup is a great combo, Tommy is a better singer than Izzy too!

    RELEASE THIS OFFICIALLY YOU MOTHERFUCKERS!

Agreed. An album of stuff in the vein of Going Down, especially an album with Izzy, would awaken the entire GNR fanbase + would garner critical acclaim to get mainstream attn. Ironically, using the average "rock station" as the litmus test isnt the best methodology. Not only that, but I had to listen to Going Down several times to get it. Playing the song one time to people who listen to Nickelback, Godsmack, and Metallica....I dunno, dont be surprised if they dont get it. Who cares. GNR is way beyond that. Even if Going Down doesnt take the world by storm, the song itself puts GNR in a FAR better position than anything they've done in a long time, financially, artistically, and it helps the world, man!

  10. Based on this reviews: http://www.mygnrforum.com/index.php?/topic/201656-going-down-articles-and-reviews-on-the-media/

I think it's safe to assume that, YES, Going Down does has potential to be a hit.

Keep telling yourself that. People were RAVING about Better when i leaked and lo and behold, it was not a 'hit'. Better featured better(pun intended) lyrics, vocals, solo, riff etc AND Axl on lead vocals. You are kidding yourself if you think a Tommy Stintson song with a guest appearance by Axl will be a hit even under the GnR name.

I never once raved about Better; I knew it wouldnt do shit. Might have in '02 but not '08. I still dont like the song. And I say Going Down has a much better chance at success because it's not all whiny, depressing, and GNR-trying-to-do-NIN/Korn.

  11. Crunchy tasty licks = Hits. Mmm. Great song.

People on here are so starved for new music that they've convinced themselves that Goin' Down is a great song as opposed to the generic rock song that it is in reality.

Sorry to disappoint you, but all of the old songs are too generic as well.
Generic is a term put out by pretentious hipster fucks who think their favorite bands are the most original things ever, when in reality there are rarely bands with a completely new, innovative sound.

Yea really. It's a way to perpetuate the same "us vs. them" mentality which they pretend to despise.
