Something I was thinking today, the day before the comeback show at Vegas in 2016 I'd been on a date with my new gf at the time. I woke up early the morning after to check the setlist on here and look at pictures etc. Since then GNR are essentially on the same tour, since then we got engaged, had a kid whose now 5, split up, got back together and split up again. My daughter is in year 1 now. Crazy if someone back then in April 2016 had said 6 years on they'd still be touring with two new tracks to show for it.

Kids who were in middle school at the start of this tour are now hitting adult age and getting ready for college.

I think Slash was more keen on Zakk Wylde, yet felt the overall sound was too much like 2 competing lead guitarists.

It’s funny though because Fortus seems like a player who could easily be a lead too.

At a certain point after just jamming I think Zakk got a call from Ozzy to tour with him again since there wasn't much going on with Guns in 1995. Interestingly I think Zakk did have a guest appearance with the band around 2011-12.

No, they played it one time before that and another time after that, three times in total.

So all in all Locomotive has been played 8 times.

I looked up the exact number for Locomotive after my post and was surprised they played it six times prior to 2019. In comparison Coma was actually the rarer song live prior to 2016 as it was only played 5 times before it became a regular part of the setlist.

Based on Slash's book I always got the impression it was a combination of Slash just not vibing personally and musically with him mixed with perhaps some territorial power struggles.  A guitarist being told he has to work with a guitarist he doesn't want to, will never end well lol

Didn't Axl get Zakk Wylde to audition in 1995 as a way to appease Slash? And yeah the power struggle and lack of communication was huge during that era post UYI from 94-96. I get the sense that he barely had contact with Axl during those years.

Those that you've mentioned plus Shotgun Blues, that's it. Even Back off Bitch was played once in 91, others are also rare but were played once or twice too (Garden of Eden, Breakdown, Bad Apples...).

I still give the band props for bringing back Dead Horse and Locomotive. Dead Horse seemed to be played regularly in 1993 but Locomotive might've been played 2 or 3 times max before it was brought back and isn't a walk in the park to perform.

Keep in mind in 2008, social networks were in their infancy. Majority of folks didn’t have smartphones. Or HDTV. There was no such thing as “influencers.” Physical media was still a thing. Spotify didn’t exist. Netflix was streaming, but had dog shit content and most people were either doing rentals in the mail, or through Blockbuster. There has been a LOT of change from 2008 to now. Sadly, or maybe cause I’m old now, it seems to have shifted for the worse.

I remember in Chuck Klosterman’s Chinese Democracy review, he even opined:

“For one thing, Chinese Democracy is (pretty much) the last Old Media album we'll ever contemplate in this context—it's the last album that will be marketed as a collection of autonomous-but-connected songs, the last album that will be absorbed as a static manifestation of who the band supposedly is, and the last album that will matter more as a physical object than as an Internet sound file. This is the end of that.”

I agree, it's interesting that a lot of this stuff (Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, early HD) existed when Chinese Democracy came out but in forms that would be hardly recognizable today.

It's had an effect on the band as well as physical media is mostly a collector's market these days and their entire catalog can be listened to on YT or Spotify.

Hard Skool and Absurd were released on streaming services where they previously would've been prioritized as physical releases or iTunes purchases in the 2000s.

Same, all I ever wanted is live Blu Rays of shows from the classic Era.  I have interest in the Vinyls too but not at those prices.

I would have probably paid $200 for all the LPS in that box which would still be high...

The Ritz show would have been a cool release on it's own..  LP or CD with the Blu Ray packaged together.

I always thought a Ritz Blu Ray set would be super cool that included the 87, 88 and 91 shows on the Blu Ray and then may a live album with a compliation of the best versions of each song played to keep it from being repetitive. And also weed out some that don't transfer live to audio. Like there are some songs that were so sloppy on the 88 Ritz show when listening but it is still my favorite show. You kind of need to see the video to witness the insanity of the performance and the reasons some songs are sloppy.

I think Slash has attested to this but it's the overall vibe and energy of the band and the gig that makes it legendary. Part of me wonders if we'll see more archive releases when the time comes where they call it a day.

    True.

Pearl Jam announces every live bootleg release with "26 new unreleased tracks!"

Neil Young does too, with his many archival live releases. All those unreleased tracks.

This reminds me of Lost Dogs by them which was a pretty good compilation of most of their B-Sides up to 2003. It still didn't include everything (Brother w/vocals, some of their Ten Club singles) but it included a lot.

  9. The Reddit thread on this makes a good point that the biggest casualty is we still won't have official live releases of songs like Breakdown, Locomotive, The Garden, Garden of Eden, and a few others like Bad Apples which was performed twice but only pro-shot for RIR 91.

I hope this does well enough that it encourages them to release clips be it audio or video on YouTube like they did last year with that Skin N' Bones tour footage but I'm realistic on that.

According to setlist.fm they played Breakdown 2 times, Locomotive 6 times, Garden of Eden 2 times, and Coma 5 times during UYI tour.

Therefore, they could publish these too, if it is true that every concert was recorded. The quality doesn't have to be top notch.

The MSG concert on December 6, 1991 features Breakdown and Locomotive. Garden of Eden has a fan recording that exists from Texas that I wish I could see live footage of since Axl sings it fast.

Agreed. Illusions were good for what they are but there are many rocks fans that Consider Guns n Roses having one good/great album. To release a couple more albums back in the day in the Vein of Appetite would have been very welcome.  I would say the same thing still stands now. Not that they could do it. With this lineup anyway..

    97 - 91 really..

They live off a handful of songs from Appetite, Lies, and the UYI albums. We have a Thor movie in 2022 that features a bunch of Guns songs that are 35-31 years old. The Spaghetti Incident and Chinese Democracy might as well not exist for a lot of people.

You can always find another band to follow or take up a hobby..

People as yourself don't get it..

The band does not cater towards you..

The band caters towards the people who actually attend live shows..

The band isn't going to change its ways but people like yourself get all tied up in knots over something you cannot control..

This thread is supposed to be about this particular show.

But as always people as yourself cannot leave there issues at the door to this thread.

From your first post it become clear you have an issue with the band before they even played a note.

You need to deal with that...

Me, I am more then happy to pay money to see the band play in a few months in New Zealand. I know what I am in for, so happy to take the risk and there will be around 50,000 other people with me on that day.

All Including myself will be simply enjoying the moment...

    So Rock on...

I'm sure the shows they put on these days are fun but people still look at this band as a creative entity along with a touring entity because they've been led on by various members of the band for years that new music and new releases are coming.

You also have a lot of their peers that started roughly around the same time as them still releasing albums, doing music videos, and giving interviews. Guns in comparison is an outlier and seem stuck in a time warp from 2016 when we're about to go into 2023.

Its obviously him...his voice, his gestures...he looks odd for sure but how can anyone think this was an impersonatar hahaha

We're used to it now but one of the things that might throw people off aside from his looks is that his speaking voice sounds a lot different than it did in the 80's-90's when it was usually very deep. 2001-present sounds a bit more nasally.
