  1. Have you guys ever thought that Kanye acting "holy" and arrogant might be part of the charm, like something his fans enjoy? It's similar to how RNR fans get all giddy over their favorite bands pissing on airplanes and earning titles like "most dangerous band in the world". Both are somewhat disingenuous and just part of the act.

He fits the angry black man trope and therefore all of his behaviour needs to be harshly criticised, even if it was a simple mistake.

RnR fans will act holier than thou about stuff outside of the genre and then praise/look the other way when it comes to crap that 'rockstars' do.

  2. It doesn't make it right, no, not at all, I was just highlighting how, in that particular exchange, on face value it appear that the greater sin was being absolved.

Depends on what one classes as a greater sin. Considering his size and strength, especially in comparison to hers, he could've easily killed her. She may have been deceptive or whatever else people want to claim, but he was the one committing a violent crime. In my mind, that is the greater sin.

  3. There is no golden era of TV, only a romanticised era for a certain amount of people. Just because you're unable to enjoy a show, doesn't mean it's not worth anything.

It's the same as any time, there's good shows and there's bad shows. It's up to you to find the ones you like.

Also, Friends being a golden era of TV? lol

  4. Sorry but yes, NO other artist has done it this way. First of all it's free. Ok other artists have done that. Fair enough. Secondly it dropped out of the blue unexpectedly with no promo. Ok fair enough others did that too. U2 did both and not only that their album was actually delivered to every single itunes account's library. NOBODY has ever done it that way. Every single person who has itunes actually has this album. Radiohead didn't do that and neither did Beyonce(who I assume you're talking about) Radiohead's was free but you still had to search for it. Beyonce's was a surprise but you had to pay for it and search for it. U2's was a surprise, it was free and everyone got it automatically. So when I say NO OTHER BAND HAS EVER DONE IT THIS WAY, I'm stating a fact.

Dude, it's just a U2 album. I was simply pointing out that this wasn't as revolutionary as you seemed to think it was and you've taken to having a tantrum.

  5. I don't care if some people think he's innocent, he is convicted of that crime. So many people defend him because as long as you go to prison, that's apparently enough. Never mind the victim who has to see his face if she turns on a TV or whatever else, he went to jail for a couple of years and is completely reformed!

People are saying the interviewer is acting unreasonably because it's Mike, and he should never have to be reminded of the fact that he raped someone because he paid for it (apparently.)

You would think Rob Ford, the man who did crack and beat his wife, would be more careful about who he associates with during his campaign because he's got enough troubles without that.

  6. Perhaps Mr Ford doesn't think that he is guilty. I mean lots of people are found to be innocent after the fact by the same courts of law that mistakenly convict them, they go on to do socio-political type work, people like Gerry Conlon etc. Anyway, you know as well as i do that this is Mike just doing the rounds, he's in Canada and he's shaking a few hands, thats the extent of it, no one sees this as Mike throwing his hat into the Canadian political arena.

Mr. Ford's personal opinions don't count when it comes to his campaign, and his endorsements are a part of keeping good PR. Whether or not you want to believe Tyson is guilty is irrelevant, as he is convicted of that crime and that reflects on Ford's campaign.

Anyone publicly endorsing Ford will have the same treatment of their past being dug into, it just so happens that Tyson is one of those people.

  7. Yeah but Mike aint in politics, Ford is, its not like Mikes running for office, it was a cheap shot and, yknow, everyone aint Paris Hilton to run off set, some people'll give you what you asked for right back.

But he's endorsing Ford. It's the same reason charities turned down the Reddit donations (that stemmed from the nude-pictures situation), if they're willing to work with or accept help from something as gross as that, what does it say about them?

What does it say about Ford and his campaign that he's working with a convicted rapist? Completely reasonable in the field of politics.

  8. Mike Tyson's rape conviction was a bunch of he said, she said back when he was king of the world surrounded by leaches and people who didn't have his best interest in mind and people more than willing to take advantage of him. This woman could have been no different. Was he a saint? Absolutely not but that was 22 years ago. Has Tyson ever admitted to committing that rape? I'm not saying he didn't but given the circumstances and lack of any evidence other than what she said it's hard to say really.

The fact remains that topic had nothing to do with anything at this point and Tyson was there to promote something else not stand trial for something that took place 22 years ago. The interviewer was way out of line and he's lucky he didn't get knocked the fuck out really.

The fact that it was 21 years ago changes things? I think not.

Actually, looking at the situation I think it was called for. Mike is endorsing a politician, in politics, peoples pasts get brought up all the time. Especially when it's something shady or criminal to be found. Mike's conviction for raping someone is the type of thing that would be brought up for anyone else saying "vote for this guy".

I'm not talking about him making youthful mistakes either, he was a fully-grown adult with a mind of his own who chose to violate another human being.

Convicted and guilty ain't the same thing. Mike Tyson is innocent as fuck in that rape case, it's as clear as day. I have lots of reasons for thinking this and none of them i suppose is that fuckin' conclusive as a case in his defence but look at the reality, some bird goes up to his room at 3am, I'm not being funny but what the fuck girl goes up to a blokes hotel room in the wee hours not thinking 'i'm on for a bit here'.

So she asked for it? Him violating her is all her fault? Nice victim blaming there.

I suppose it's the same when a woman wears a short skirt or low-cut top, their actions and clothes negate their actual words, right?

  9. Most people don't think of Mike Tyson as a rapist

That is a problem though, he's in The Hangover and people think of him as some hilarious person when he's a convicted criminal. He's assaulted people outside of the ring and is a rapist, he doesn't deserve to have a career just because he can say sorry and smile for a camera.

Bringing it up in this particular interview may have been unprofessional etc, but I have less of a problem with that than Mike Tyson being celebrated.

  10. Yep and every other band is as big and gets the the attention that U2 does when it comes to an album release. Fact is this was completely under wraps and nobody knew about it at all until it happened. Criticize and downplay it all you want if that's what you're getting at but the fact a band as big as they are pulled it off the way they did and get their music out to over 500 million people in the blink of an eye is cool regardless of what other bands have managed it. The reality is no other band has managed it this way though. It's a first.

The artist in particular I'm thinking of did and does, and she's not a band. I'm not downplaying U2's hustle, i'm just saying that relaxing an album without people knowing is not unheard of in this modern time as you inferred.

You say no other artist has done it this way? I hope you mean for free because otherwise, an iTunes exclusive surprise release has been done before.

  11. Right, I just wasn't sure if you were knocking it just because it's been done before, which is what some people have been doing that I'm reading on various sites.

As far as the way they did it: Announced at the Apple press release, which is huge to begin with, and essentially put right into people's accounts, rather than just saying "Hey, here's an album download if you want it." Yeah, they have to click on it to download, but people are likely more inclined to click on something already in their library and give it a shot rather than saying "Oh, U2 has a free download link for their album on their site? Maybe I'll check it out."

Oh no, not knocking it for that reason at all. Just wanted to clarify that they weren't the first of these current times to do so.

Yeah I get that, that's a great form of promotion for them. A fat paycheque from Apple (possibly) and free promo.

  12. I grew up with almost every genre imaginable thanks to my mother. She frequently played The Beatles, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin, Guns N' Roses, Prince, Tupac, N.W.A., TLC, Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, Aaliyah, Miles Davis, Mozart and more when I was growing up.

I went through a phase of hating 'mainstream pop' and being pretentious, but now if something sounds good and is fun, I'll listen to it. I don't care what genre or whatever.

  13. Pretty cool how they were able to keep this a secret and an entire album was just released with no release date being announced. In 2014 that's actually pretty awesome.

Yep, because that's not been done within the last year by anyone else...

Anyway, downloaded it because a free album is nice but it's U2 so I'm not rushing to listen.

Yep, and the fact that it's U2, one of the biggest bands in the world, makes it a little more surprising than most other bands.

Of course it's been done before, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they did it, and in the manner they did it.

Okay... I was just pointing out that it's not so unheard of in this modern day as the other poster pointed out.

What manner in which they did it?

  14. From 1983-onward there are plenty of iconic or legendary artists, although they may not be to Gene's liking.

    Notorious B.I.G.

    Tupac

    P Diddy / Diddy / Puff Daddy

    N.W.A.

    Public Enemy

    Wu-Tang Clan

    Snoop Dogg

    Dr Dre

    Eminem

    Kanye West

    Nas

    Outkast / Andre 3000

    Jay-Z

    Whitney Houston

    Mariah Carey

    Britney Spears

    Christina Aguilera

    Beyoncé

    Rihanna

    Amy Winehouse

    Björk

    Boyz II Men

    Oasis

    The Smiths

    Radiohead

    Lauryn Hill / The Fugees

    R. Kelly

    The Stone Roses

    The White Stripes

    Nine Inch Nails

and those are just some of the more 'mainstream' ones I can name off the top off my head.

Contrary to what Gene seems to think, music post-his heyday is not dead.
