The General lyrics aren't exactly the song's strong suit, wish he could've been more direct, almost feels like he holds back, which could be deliberate, anywho not comparable to Illusions, like use the OIAM approach.
Monsters is that spitting venom which is a welcoming return, foolish on my part to try to compare to Illusions, we won't get that ever again as it's likely Axl writes heavy through experiences solely, unlike sitting in a dark room and channeling from within.

You know I've always bucked against that line about Axl trying to chase the trends. I think if you hear a song or style you like and then it pushes you creatively to make something that is in your style but now influenced by the newer material that you're hearing, that shouldn't be looked at as a negative.
I guess it would be one thing if we thought he heard Linkin Park for example and decided he wanted to add a rapper to try and appeal to the younger kids, but he didn't legitimately like that sound. It's something different to be inspired by a sound and then create based on that. Just always struck me as a cheapshot when people said that. Like in 2002 with the braids and the jerseys, I always assumed Axl just liked the look. Not that he wanted to look like he belonged in a Wu Tang video.
Good point, there sure was a lot of thought put into it once he made it to the studio and you're starting to see a vision of his unfold and not just throwing shite at a wall and see what clings, it's easy using hindsight, but seems to me time had to pass during the 90's for him to form his vision with all that was going on around him musically and with the players he had was, for a lack of better word 'tools' to achieve said vision. I think the trend chaser moniker stems from him incorporating mainstream hitting acts at the time and it could be interpreted that way, who knows.
He set himself up to fail from the get-go with his own terms and a supposed trilogy of his, but great to have it unfold finally.

Remember during the Axl Chats, the man himself said he'd rather not comment about exact inspirations to give the fans some time to develop their own ideas. So here we are!
I get lots of late era Faith No More influences from these two gems. Think "Stripsearch", "Last Cup Of Sorrow", "Paths Of Glory"
Anyone else hear that?
Oh for sure there's FNM influenced stuff there, wouldn't put it at the top of that list, but it's there. Lotta late 90's along with the mentality of progressing naturally beyond illusions. He did get too busy with chasing trends instead of focusing on material presented, which imo was up to snuff.

would be very interesting to hear specifically with the less satisfied listeners and their thoughts. Personally intrigued to know what they expected in their minds, that is if they had any to begin with, just curious.

the general vocal melody during verses sounds like Pixies - Silver Bullet, hmm Axl ghostwriter for Charles confirmed?
-
whatever Baz says, I can live with atlas, sog, seven and the cult followed ones though
-
another for the record; crickets near water really trigger my spidey senses, it fits definitely

I can't wait for that bald-headed hipster fuck on YouTube to trash this song like all the others, lol.

not enough layers and distorted falsetto with schizo lyrical personas to reach the 1010 climax, not hip enough. nice try Axl.

Wasn't there a rumoured song title years ago like "daddy will the devil harm mommy and me" or anything similar?
daddy can * do mommy *
fear not it all went into the general, all the monsters, however we now know there's a new unheard of vault somewhere, hmm

the general on the piss off scale passes with flying rainbow colors from here

In some fucked up way, this is Axl's most inspired piece that's been captured sonically, again good or bad, but it's there and it's over now.

Just listened to the 9:02 version on youtube.
First impression: bad. Really bad. Axl sounds like King Diamond at times during the General and like Ozzy on Monsters.
No riffs again, just very boring chord progressions coated with tons of layers.
Mh. Almost anything on Chinese Democracy is better, imo.
Will have to listen again.
it will grow inside you trust me
slash has redeemed himself with this one imo

music aside, just fun to watch it play out between the two extremes on both spectrums, competing for who can convince themselves the most that it's either the goat/bloat.
-
good or bad, song requires your full attention, more of that I say yes daddy

Drums are something for sure.
Both chorus' build and create a nice contrast, like one ends on a low/atonal note and the other on high, unsurprisingly few things popping up that need attention, slash all over M. Will be interesting if they have a transition on release or a simple fade
-
This ain't even THat out there even for uncle Axl, coupled with a simple song structure, try the baddie with headphones on, final rip will rip.

Baz wasn't kidding when he said Axl was mean

No idea when the vocals for Monsters have been recorded but it's the best from Axl since Spaghetti. Beats the shit out of the Chinese album. Points for that.
Irs, twat says hello, anyway this seems like an apt song for the occasion

Dont know about you, but combine tg and sm, there might just be world peace by new year's

Monsters feel like a natural progression of the old band with Axl egomania, I like it, nice one. General will be interesting with a proper mix, I presume.
Axl done cucked me again.

Blasphemous statement on a hugely mainstream rock band forum, I agree.
