“I went into the studio with my happy-go-lucky guitar player attitude,” he explained. “It was a simple song with a I-IV-V [chord] progression called Wiggle Wiggle. Right before I played, Bob asked me to make it sound like Django [Reinhardt, the French-Romani jazz legend].

“I didn’t think he was serious,” Slash continued. “I played what I thought was one of my better one-off guitar bits as me, and also did an acoustic track. And I asked Don to send me a rough [mix] when he was ready.”

However, as Slash was soon to find out, the rough mix unfortunately didn’t include his solo.

He added, “A couple of days later he sent me the cassette, and when we get to the guitar solo section, it’s nothing but me strumming acoustic for sixteen bars. I called Don and said, ‘What happened to the guitar?’ He told me, ‘Bob says it sounds too much like Guns N’ Roses.’”

It's a strange Dylan album. Definately not in my top 10, 20 or 30. I suspect Bob Dylan does not work very well in those all-star cast situations. Maybe nobody really does. Not really Slash or Bob's fault, more just a weird idea to try and smoosh incongruous players together.

I do like Born In Time from that record though. Other than that it's mighty slim pickins.

  2. Remember when Frank was on Appetite For Distortion and he seemed mildly terrified to be asked a hypothetical question about what Guns N Roses *might* sound like *if* they went into a studio and recorded some music? That was some weird shit and a pretty revealing moment. It's strange at the top.

P.s. I should add that Frank seems like a real nice dude. And respect to @Gambit83!

Just heard that Ronnie passed :( RIP to an absolute legend and queen.

absolute Queen. Incredible that she survived her marriage and had a beautiful second act. The Ronettes deserved to feel the love.

  4. was daydreaming the other day about an alternate reality where Say Say Say was on Thriller instead of The Girl Is Mine. That'd be cool. The album seemed to do fairly well regardless

  5. *If* there's a change to the 'Bitches' credit in the UYI box, I wouldn't judge Guns harshly for it, nor would I consider them to be going soft, being revisionist, buckling to the times or whatever you might want to call it.

I'm not offended by the 'Bitches' credit (although I find it a bit goofy...). Good or bad, it reflects a time and a place. It happened, it is what it is. I liked UYI okay then and I like it okay now.

But for a lot of people, humour is different in your 40s/50s than it was in your 20s. Life experience, growing up, mellowing. If GnR in their late 50s were reviewing the proofs for a re-release and baulked at 'Bitches', I can't say I'd blame them.

  6. I like me some Tommy. I got to see the reunited Replacements towards the end of their run (killer), and was recently listening to some 2015 live recordings that made me think they set the gold standard for reunions.

The shows were exciting, unpredictable and generous. They played at least 60 songs over a two year period including obscurities (Buck Hill!) and new stuff.

It all flamed out once the band realised it couldn't work together in a meaningful way. I bet it was a night & day experience for Tommy S when compared to the 2014 Guns Ashba/dancers/Monster energy drink nadir.

I'm so odd when it comes to early Floyd / Syd.

I do not like Piper at all. However, I love all of Syds solo music after he left. I also love all the rest of the pre Dark Side material Floyd made after Syd left.

Interesting. I like Piper but I definitely prefer Syd solo.

  8. I have a few unpopular GnR opinions, depending on who I'm hanging out with.

My girlfriend in high school thought it was lame that I liked GnR at all. She was/is a punker and to her Guns were an overblown stadium band with stupid videos. We caught up for a beer earlier this year and she'd changed her mind...and even went to see Nu Guns in 2007! She maintains the Illusion videos are ridiculous...and she may have a point. "What's with those bike pants on the psych's couch?!"

My buddy Patrick thinks I like the Illusions records too much because "those guys SUCK after Appetite" (I disagree, but understand where he's coming from...AFD is my favourite my a long way).

My brother thinks I don't like Illusions enough.

My old workmate Dan thinks I've slept on Chinese, which he worships. I love the drama of the CD period and it's an incredible saga, but the record itself just leaves me cold. I don't hate it but never found it fun to listen to. But I'm still always happy to read any tidbit of info about this record because it's all such a batshit story. I should say that I enjoy some live recordings I've heard from 06 and 10, but I'm not a big bootleg trainspotter.
